Angel's Envy 86 Proof Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (750ml)

SKU #1068409 98 points Wine Enthusiast

A beautiful, mouthwatering newcomer to the whiskey scene. Named for the 'angel’s share,' the portion that evaporates from the barrel during the aging process, this golden amber spirit is finished in Port barrels, which explains those juicy red-fruit notes that slide into the long finish. Look for orange peel, vanilla and roasted nut flavors, too. (KN) (7/2012)

Kentucky straight bourbon whiskey finished in a port pipe. This is veteran master distiller Lincoln Henderson’s newest creation, and it's a beauty. Richly textured, silky, and well-rounded, with ripe berried fruits, candied tangerine, light toffee, maple syrup, and creamy vanilla, sprinkled with spice (cinnamon, hint of mint). Smooth, silky finish, and dangerously drinkable! The port pipe notes dovetail perfectly. Lovely just the way it is, but it's begging for a cigar. My only gripe: why not 45 or 50% ABV? But I'm splitting hairs. I really enjoy this stuff! (Vol. 20, #1)

K&L Notes

When former Woodford Reserve top dog Lincoln Henderson (may he rest in peace) finally brought his port-finished bourbon to California everybody went nuts. Lincoln sourced some fantastic juice for this project--rich, smooth, supple, and easy drinking. The port barrels really add a beautiful layer of sweetness to the whiskey that most drinkers will really enjoy. It's been a tremendous hit, much like High West and Whistle Pig have been for rye before it. (David Driscoll, K&L Spirits buyer)

So what happens when one of Kentucky's most respected distillers source ultra high quality bourbon and finishes it in sweet Port wine casks, the bourbocalypse? Perhaps. But what's really going on here is one of the most successful examples of the potential of wine finishing in modern whiskey. Be it the Henderson's deft palate or their monumental experience - the Angel's Envy is unquestionably a sensation. Easy enough for you mom to love it, yet NOT boring in the slightest. The flavor profile is never dominated by the port, so it still tastes like bourbon, put the sweet rich flavors are there to enhance and envelop the already wonderful profile of the bourbon. The late Lincoln Henderson was clearly a genius and we know his legacy will be well looked after by the brands current custodians.

I picked this up on a strong recommendation from a buyer at another store.

The aroma is fantastic: layers of toffee, oak, vanilla, caramel, and grapes (port). The taste leaves something to be desired. It's incredibly nutty, with washes of oak and vanilla, but there is very little caramel or grape presence. It's not awful, but it's unremarkable for the price. I found myself more enthused by the Elijah Craig 18 in the same price class.

- When people consider domestic wine, they normally think about the state of California. The fine viticultural Region within California, including the Napa Valley, Sonoma, Santa Cruz Mountains, Mendocino and Santa Barbara, are capable of growing grapes of world-class quality. But there's plenty of fabulous wine coming from other states, too. Oregon, Washington and New York are also causing eyebrows (and glassware) to be raised around the world.
