Monumental stuff in every way, the blockbuster 2010 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Caillou has put on even more richness and weight than when I tasted it on release ( and it rated 98). Inky colored, it offers up extraordinary aromas and flavors of blackcurrants, black cherry, crushed rocks, spring flowers and melted licorice to go with a full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, dense and layered profile on the palate. It needs to be tasted to be believed. Forget it for another 4-5 years, at which point it will evolve gracefully for another two decades. It’s that good (JD)
Stunning aromas and flavors of cassis, plum eau de vie and mulled blackberry fruit roll out, with notes of violet, pastis, apple wood and fruitcake all coursing through the dense finish. Terrific grip is thoroughly embedded. Should cruise in the cellar. Best from 2015 through 2030.

(half grenache and half mourvedre): Inky purple. A sexy, highly perfumed bouquet displays scents of blackberry and cherry liqueur, allspice and potpourri, with a bright mineral overtone. Smells like a ripe, exotic rendition of Clos de Beze. Palate-staining red and dark berry flavors expand with air and pick up notes of spicecake and lavender pastille. The mineral quality comes back strong on an impressively long, penetrating, gently tannic finish.
If anything slightly more transparent than Les Quartz from the same producer. Another cask sample. Light rim. Very fragrant yet spicy. Tastes very strongly of Mourvèdre with that gamey/animal/oily metal combination. It is certainly a novelty and very brooding and dry on the end but I actually think I personally prefer the lift of the Quartz - even if it is a bit sweeter and more mainstream for the appellation. But this is serious, very thick stuff with more than a hint of dried prunes and is very good wine. 18.5/20 opints. Drink 2018-2032.
