2015 Domaine Lafage "Arqueta" Collioure

SKU #1288601 93-95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

Not yet bottled, the 2015 Collioure Arqueta checks in as a blend of 40% Grenache, 30% Syrah, 25% Carignan and the rest Grenache Gris. Showing hints of sea breeze and iodine backed up by fabulously pure notes of black raspberry, creamy licorice, cassis and crushed flower, it hits the palate with full-bodied richness, polished tannin and a seamless, silky texture. Count me a fan and savvy readers need to snatch up this beauty. I’ve raved time and time again about the quality - and value - coming from Domaine Lafage’s Jean-Marc Lafage. A large estate that pulls from vines in the Agly Valley, the Aspres region, and vines around the estate and close the Mediterranean Sea, they’ve just completed work on a new, state of the art winery and cellar. I can only imagine the quality will continue to soar at this estate. (JD) (4/2016)

Wines are like children, if you give them a good start, nurture them with love, diligence and care, and trust that they will develop a sense of their own potential, strength and character, well, the sky's the limit. This seems to be the philosophy behind Jean-Marc Lafage's amazing success, and the 2015 Arqueta is the latest in a string of phenomenal wines from the restless heart of Roussillon. Selected from fifty-year-old vines and co-fermented in tank, this wine resonates with captive aromas of summer cherries, ripe blackberries, sage and wildflowers, with a palate flush with dark fruits, mocha and potpourri. Poised, fresh and primed for a slow, lingering Mediterranean feast with good friends, may the wine flow as effortlessly as the conversation!

Although the wine starts off a little quiet, decant it for a bit and see what happens... Initially, baking spices dominate, but they are followed by the delicious scent of fresh cherries. The wine is soft, yet approachable with great round mouthfeel. Definitely goes down easy and leaves you wanting more.

Just smacks you in the face with garrigue. Get into it a little a further and there’s an intriguing Cherry Pepsi thing going on. Not Cherry Coke--Cherry Pepsi--just to make that clear. A quiet savory note also fights its way into the glass. Definitely a powerful wine, yet it steps off the weight a little bit, it feels oddly restrained for 15% Abv. Not overly velvety or incredibly oaked, it really showcases the fruit, and puts it at the center of the tasting experience. For those of you who love the Narassa from Lafage, this is less rich and powerful, instead coming from the perspective of showcasing purity and fruitiness. It definitely showcases classic elements of wines from Southwest France.

This is one of the finest cuvees I’ve had from Domaine Lafage (who makes a lot of great cuvees). This Grenache dominant Roussillon is aged only 15% in Burgundy barrels, making the fruit the star of this wine! Bright plum, blackberry bramble and pomegranate flavors are rich and fresh with just a touch of toast and a small bit of those southern French dried herbs. The integration and balance are impeccable. This is one value wine to make sure not to miss!

Beautiful red fruit aromas, subtle hints of clove and spice notes along with a whiff of fresh cut flowers all seamlessly rise from the glass. The palate is a pretty blend of fresh red berry fruit as well as mineral notes and a touch of oak. Perfectly balanced with fine tannins and bright acidity this is a fantastic red wine and a fabulous bargain to boot!
Top Value! Drink from 2017 to 2020
