Having placed in the top 50 of Wine Spectator's 2016 Top 100 list, the Montes Cabernet Sauvignon continues to be one of the world's best for its modest price. Aurelio Montes built up his winery to focus on a number of different varieties and price points, though it is arguably their Syrah and Cab programs which lead the pack. As good as their higher end, famous "icon" bottlings are, this Cabernet is possibly even more impressive for its value and consistency.

This is an honest and delicious little Cabernet from the Colchagua Valley. Full, rich, dark fruit plays well against that classic peppery spice so often found in Chilean wines. This wine is easy-drinking and fun, with polished fruit and excellent balance, but doesn't lose its earthy, Chilean charm. Great buy for the price!

The Montes Classic Cabernet is one of those wines you just can't find fault with. It shows great medium bodied pure cabernet fruit, lovely structure and fine dusty tannins. From such a great producer, it's wonderful to find something in the $10 range that is an astonishing buy. Montes has a huge following due to their higher end wines, so don't hesitate, I don't expect this one to last long

Montes' "Classic" label is one of the most reliable sources for big, flavorful, and super inexpensive reds. The 2014 vintage of Cabernet is seriously built, offering structure and flavor quite rare for Cab in this price-point. Big berries like cherry and black currants pour forth immediately, followed by spicy bell peppers and cedar. The peppery qualities offer some savory characteristics but its the ripe, forward fruit and sweet, velvety tannins that take center stage and make this a true crowd-pleaser. This is bound to become a staple back porch red as grilling season kicks off.

Let's give credit where credit is due: Aurelio Montes created loads of interest in his so-called "icon" wines - Montes Folly, Purple Angel, Alpha M - at a time when most wines from Chile were selling for much less. The investment in the high end ultimately paid off, not just for those wines but also for their value oriented wines like this Cabernet. At under $10, it slays most any other sub $10 Cab out there, with aromatic complexity (roasted coffee bean, eucalypt, red fruits), fruit intensity (coupled with a lovely mineral edge, thanks to Colchagua's granite soils) and balance (13.5% ABV sound good?) Yes, while you may have seen this wine around, and we certainly did not discover it, we did re-discover its world beating value.

Cabernet Sauvignon and Blends

- Cabernet Sauvignon has come a long way from its role as a blending varietal, however dominant, in the wines of Bordeaux. Today it is the most planted red varietal in the world. Identified as a descendent of Cabernet Franc and Sauvignon Blanc, the late-ripening Cabernet Sauvignon needs to be planted in warmer climates to fully ripen. Its small berries can easily be identified for their distinctive blue color, thick skins and high tannins. And while the varietal has its own definitive characteristics: green pepper-like aromas and black currant flavors among them, it is perhaps most prized for its ability to convey terroir, vintage and winemaking. A relatively new varietal, Cabernet Sauvignon started making inroads into the wines of the M├ędoc and Graves in the late-18th century. Today it is also dominant in the up-and-coming Entre-Deux-Mers region of Bordeaux and can also be found in Southwest France. It is the companion varietal to Sangiovese in Italy's Super Tuscans and is planted all over Europe, stretching to lesser-known winegrowing regions like Russia and Lebanon. In the Americas Cabernet Sauvignon has found champions in every nook and cranny of California and among winemakers in Washington, where it complements plantings of Merlot. In South America, Cab thrives in Chile, but can also be found in smaller amounts in Argentina and even in Mexico.
