2011 Bodegas Muriel Reserva Rioja

SKU #1297575 92 points James Suckling

Floral and subtle fruit character on the nose follows through to a full to medium body, soft and silky tannins and a flavorful finish. So refined. Hints of herbs and pepper towards the end. Drink or hold. (12/2016)

90 points Wine Enthusiast

Baked, rooty aromas of sandalwood, exotic spices and berry fruits are attractive. Though slightly grabby on the palate, this shows the right structure and build. Flavors of up-front oak, herbal plum and raspberry finish dry, with firm, pinching tannins. Drink through 2021. (MS) (8/2016)

90 points Wine Spectator

Pretty fruit flavors of strawberry and raspberry mingle with vanilla, spice and light herbal notes in this alluring red. The tannins are light but firm, while citrusy acidity keeps this fresh through the vanilla-scented finish. Drink now through 2021. (TM) (5/2016)

Dark red. Dried cherry, blackberry, licorice, game and a building vanilla quality on the perfumed nose. Pliant, appealingly sweet dark fruit and oak spice flavors show good depth and no rough edges. Finishes smooth and gently spicy, displaying a repeating vanilla note, soft tannins and good length. (JR) (1/2017)

Charming Rioja. Immediately enticing with dark fruit laced with oak and spice. Medium bodied with a suppleness that you do not normally find in Rioja. Moderate tannins, acidity and oak that are well integrated into the dark fruit. It goes down a little too easy and you want to reach for more. I liked it before I knew the price; I liked it even more after I was told $15!

This is a fantastic value in Rioja. Supple fruit, with ample body, juicy acidity, and gently spicy flavors just scream Rioja. This is the kind of red you can drink with or without a meal, pour for your guests who drink California reds or those who tend to prefer other stuff, and it will just work out and make everyone happy. Tasty and strongly recommended.

First, let me say how cool it is to share my name with Bodegas Muriel. Of course if the wine was bad, that wouldn't be cool. Not to worry, this is a fantastic wine at a great price. I got black fruit and dried sage on the nose. In the mouth, the plum fruit had some warm ground spices that added to the texture. The tannin was subtle with a lengthy finish. I was pleased with this wine, but I was impressed when I re-tasted it 24 hour later, it bloomed. It was smoother and more complex. There was elegance to it that wasn’t there the day before. This is a must for any Rioja fan. And again I’m not just saying it because my name is on the label!

This is a great example of delicious Rioja, drinking beautifully now. Bodegas Muriel makes wine in a darker-fruited style, with a fair amount of body and good sweet spice from the oak aging. On the nose the wine displays gorgeous berry fruit, and gives way to mocha, red earth and baking spice on the palate. The tannins have softened beautifully here, but they still certainly have the structure to age for the long haul.

Additional Information:

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.

- With more land under vine than any other country in the world, Spain is the great sleeping wine giant. In recent years, a great deal of money and passion has been poured in the burgeoning Spanish wine industry, helping to improve quality among its vast array of wines from sparkling Cava to Sherry to Rioja Gran Reserva. The most important red-wine-producing regions are Rioja, Ribera del Duero and Navarra in the north and Priorat and Penedes in the northeast.
