2015 Delas "Saint Esprit" Côtes du Rhône

SKU #1300878 90 points Decanter

An elegant, floral wine, with dark fruit, spice and pepper notes on nose and palate, and firm, ripe tannins lending poise.

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2015 Côtes du Rhône St Esprit is a medium-bodied, peppery and garrigue-scented effort that has medium-bodied richness, plenty of charm and a delicious, refreshing quality. It’s another example of the terrific quality of the Côtes du Rhônes in 2015. (JD) (12/2016)

A recent visit to the northern Rhone was one of the great highlights of our buying trip especially once we visited Delas. They have some extraordinary holdings for the high end bottlings like their famed St-Joseph and Hermitage wines. The attention to detail is amazing with tiny lots of grapes all fermented individually in a variety of vessels ranging from oak tanks, to concrete vats and stainless steel. This attentiveness allows Delas to make great top tier wines but it also delivers some of the best value wines in the market. These mico-lots are compiled together to generate what still remains one of the true standouts for cost to quality Cotes du Rhone. The wine is always Syrah dominant and the 2015 vintage has given this grape some of its most favorable weather conditions to show its best stuff. The wine is plump and juicy with roasted black plum and fig flavors but maintains notes of tobacco and pepper. This thrilling little red delivers a lot of character for not a lot of money and our price is one of the best in the west.

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them. - Legendary wine-producing region in southeast France. Stereotypically speaking, Rhone wines are high in alcohol, and the majority produced is red. The northern Rhone is best known for outstanding 100% Syrah wines from areas such as Cote Rotie and Hermitage, as well as for fabulous white wines from Condrieu (where Viognier is king). In the southern Rhone, look for spicy, full-bodied wines that are blends of Grenache, Syrah, and other varietals coming from appellations such as Chateauneuf du Pape, Gigondas, or Rasteau. Wines labeled as Cote du Rhone or Cotes du Rhone Village (a cut above generic Cotes du Rhone) are frequently found here in the US because they often represent some of the best values on the market.
