2017 Domained Jean-Michel Dupre "Le Grottier" Morgon
Review Date: 08-16-2019
The Domaine Dupre Morgon "Le Grottier" is a different beast than its brother "Cote du Py." Earthier and more driven, this wine shows a touch more complexity and drive with layers of cracked pepper, blue fruits, suppler tannins, and sweet tobacco notes. A fantastic Morgon that is a steal at only $16.99!!

2017 Chateau de la Maltroye Chassagne Montrachet 1er Cru "Chenevottes"
Review Date: 08-16-2019
There's been a lot of talk regarding the rising prices of white Burgundy, accompanied by a lot of hand-wringing. To be able to drink this kind of quality from a top 1er Cru site for under $60 is a godsend. Powerful, rich, structured, and brimming with waxy yellow fruits and tropical notes, this zesty, layered masterpiece is a wonderful insight into the greatness that is the 2017 white Burgundy vintage.

2017 Chateau de la Maltroye Bourgogne Blanc

This is a serious white wine for being just a Bourgogne Blanc. You can taste the pedigree here, tons of Chassagne-Montrachet character from the first sniff to the lasting finish this is a fantastic wine. Great acidity, boatloads of fruit and a boundless energy that literally leaps from the glass. This wine is exactly what you want from a Bourgogne Blanc.

2000 Domaine Tortochot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Review Date: 07-31-2019
Power and elegance are the two terms that immediately spring to mind when smelling the 2000 Tortochot. Loaded with spice, pepper and red cherry aromas this layered and complex grand cru slowly unfurls in the glass to reveal a multi-faceted red that is just beginning to strut its stuff. A great wine in the making this wine feels much younger than it really is.

1997 Domaine Tortochot Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru
Review Date: 07-31-2019
The oldest and loveliest of the Tortochot Grand Crus the 1997 is a rose/brackish red with alluring aromas of dried herbs, strawberry compote and spice. The palate is surprisingly spry and lively with red fruit, crackling tannins and impressive drive and verve thru the mid-palate all the way to the finish. Out of all the Tortochot's I think I was most impressed by this wine.

Limpid red in the glass with aromas of freshly macerated strawberries and wild sour cherry. Amazingly youthful on the palate this 21 year-old Burgundy shows depth, power and precision with firm tannins and lovely red fruit. This can easily go another 10+ years but is drinking great right now.

2017 Domaine Jean-Michel Dupre "Cote du Py" Morgon
Review Date: 07-29-2019
A classic Morgon Cote du Py with a nose that is exactly what you come to expect from a fine Cote du Py: layered and elegant, with hints of berry, rose petals, earth, and forest floor. The palate is alive with gorgeous berry fruit and pomegranate flavors, with zippy acidity and crunchy tannins. This is a fabulous value and drinks like a wine 2-3 times the price.

2017 Olivier Leflaive Bourgogne Blanc "Les Sétilles"
Review Date: 07-24-2019
The 2016 Setilles flew off our shelves thanks to a 91-point score and it happened to be one of the featured wines poured at the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. However, I prefer the 2017. It is a bright, energetic white with zesty flavors and aromas of lemon, orchard fruits, and a touch of salinity. Perfectly balanced with just a hint of oak, this complex, everyday white should be snatched up by the case! Sourced 50/50 from Puligny-Montrachet and Meursault, this is a stunning white wine value and a worthy successor to the delicious 2016!

2017 Julien Schaal "Schoenenbourg Gypse" Riesling Grand Cru Alsace
Review Date: 04-26-2019
Out of all of the 2017 Schaal Rieslings the "Schoenenbourg Gypse" Riesling Grand Cru is my favorite. The balance between petrol, saline and flinty-ness with intense orchard fruit flavors is spectacular. There is so much energy in this wine it almost crackles on your palate. The nose is enticing, the palate is lively and the finish deftly lingers as each flavor echoes then slowly fades away like waves crashing and retreating from the shoreline. To be able to get an Alsatian wine of this quality for under $20 is a no-brainer buy as it gets!

Gorgeous aromas of red berry fruit, espresso, crushed stone and forest floor leap from the glass. The palate has excellent length and complexity with berry fruit, bitter chocolate and dried herb flavors that deftly mingle against firm tannins and a lively palate. This is a wonderful Cotes-du-Rhone that drinks like a baby Chateauneuf-du-Pape!

2015 E. Guigal Saint-Joseph Rouge
Review Date: 04-17-2019
Guigal just cranks out winner-after-winner and the 2015 Saint Joseph Rouge is no exception. This wine is absolutely seductive from the very sniff, lots of exotic spice and red and black fruit aromas. The palate is lively and dense with red cherries, licorice, crushed rock, bitter chocolate and a zippy finish. An outstanding value this wine drinks handsomely now and should give you pleasure over the next 5-10 years as well.

2016 Domaine La Barroche "Signature" Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Review Date: 03-07-2019
Young Julien Barrot of Domaine la Barroche is a name to remember, only in his 30s he is already becoming world-renowned for fashioning some of the greatest young Chateauneuf-du-Papes currently available in the market. The Signature is stunning from the very first sniff from the glass where aromas of Asian spice, marzipan, baker's chocolate and cassis liqueur all slowly rise from the glass. The palate is alive with flavors of blackberry and cassis jelly buffered by lively acidity and fine tannins. The finish is long and supple with spice and berry flavors slowly fading away in perfect harmony.

2014 St. Jean du Barroux "La Pierre Noire" Côtes du Ventoux
Review Date: 02-19-2019
A more serious offering the 2014 La Pierre Noir is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah with a nose of lead, pepper and black fruits. The palate bursts with spices and an array of berry fruits that run the spectrum from boysenberry all the way to black currant. The finish here is stupendous, with a soft echo of spice and black fruits that lingers on the palate for 45+ seconds before slowly disappearing from the back of the tongue. Bravo! This is a wonderful homage to the heights that can be achieved in Ventoux.

2015 St. Jean du Barroux "La Source" Ventoux
Review Date: 02-19-2019
Saint Jean du Barroux is in the top 2-3 producers in all of Ventoux one of the up-and-coming regions in the Cotes du Rhone. The 2015 La Source is a blend of 70% Grenache, 25% Carignan and 5% Cinsault which results in an earthy, briary nose of pipe tobacco, spice, black tea and animal notes. The palate is electric with notes of black and ripe red fruits perfectly accentuated with lively acidity and crunchy tannins. This is an insanely good red wine and has the complexity of a wine 3-4 times its price. A great introduction to the wonderful wines coming out of the Ventoux.

The palate is a sexy mash-up of red fruits, dried herbs, beef blood and crushed volcanic rock all wrapped around silky tannins and racy acidity. 2016 Joseph Drouhin Côte de Beaune Villages
Review Date: 11-21-2018
I was lucky enough to have a wonderful sit-down tasting with Véronique Drouhin, who graciously poured an array of amazing offerings while providing facts and stories that gave a great backstory to why many of the wines outperformed their neighbors. While they make stunning Grand Crus and Premier Crus, one wine that always stands out as a bargain to me is the Côte de Beaune-Villages. A bit larger-scaled, more rustic wine with darker fruits more apparent, spice notes, and an earthier bent, this offering is a great showcase of what Domaine Drouhin can do and of the subtle differences between the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune.

From one of the most highly-regarded vineyards in all of Alsace comes the 2017 Julien Schaal Riesling Rangen de Thann Grand Cru Volcanique. 2016 Domaine Faiveley Mercurey 1er Cru "Clos des Myglands"
Review Date: 06-13-2018
Faiveley is doing some amazing things in Mercurey. They built a winery in Mercurey, which means they no longer have to truck north to Gevrey-Chambertin all their fruit for vinification--the fruit never leaves the village and can be picked at optimal levels and vinified immediately. The results have been jaw-dropping, with a level of quality I have never seen from Mercurey wines, which are well-known as being hard and angular in nature. Now these latest offerings from Faiveley display beautiful red fruit and are amazingly open and ready-to-drink in their youth. The Myglands is seductive on the nose with aromas of red cherry compote, cinnamon and hints of crushed red roses. The palate is packed with gorgeous red fruits and subtle spice notes along with great persistence on the palate and a fresh, long and lively finish.

2011 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 07-10-2014
Glass Full image Glass Full image Glass Full image Glass Full image Glass Full image
The 2011 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon is the best 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon I have tasted! 2011 was by all accounts a very challenging vintage but there were a few wineries that seem to have been able to weather the storm and make a very good wine, La Jota is one of them. One of the advantages of mountain grown fruit is they can pick later and allow a longer hang time coupled with the tension put on the vines to grow in the gravelly volcanic soil gives the grapes a more defined personality. The complexity and depth that the 2011 La Jota showed took me by surprise, the wine starts off with aromas of crème de cassis, graphite and lavender notes give way to dark blueberry and blackberry fruit and spice notes. This wine has great balance, power and depth coupled with great fruit and just the right amount of oak. A great wine for any vintage but truly a standout in 2011!

2010 Pavie Macquin, St-Emilion
Review Date: 02-05-2013
Made by Nicolai Thienpont (Larcis-Ducasse, Beauséjour-Duffau). Cinnamon, red cherry, round with loads of cherry fruit; this wine has an elegance about it. ***. At UGC: Beautiful wine, with a very pretty nose of red fruit and flowers that's more Burgundian than Bordelaise. On the palate the wine has laser-beam focused red fruit, mouthwatering acidity and vibrancy. This feels like a synthesis of Burgundy and Bordeaux. One of the prettiest wines at the tasting. I am very impressed.

2010 Clinet, Pomerol
Review Date: 02-05-2013
One of the best wines I tasted at the UGC, if not the best. This stuff is heaven in a glass. Notes of dark blueberry preserves, hints of graphite and black currant. Tons of energy, with a layered palate that just oozes fruit, layer after layer. This wine is delicious!

2010 Joseph Phelps "Freestone Vineyards" Sonoma Coast Chardonnay

-1997. That’s the first thought I had when tasting the 2010 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley, this was a return to one of the best values I had ever experienced in my life in California Cabernet Sauvignon. The 1997 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley was so good they made less of it because the lion share went into the flagship wine “Insignia”. The 2010 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon is that good, it feels like a $100+ California Cabernet Sauvignon but sells for about half that price. The wine has impeccable balance, depth of fruit nicely accented by hints of herbs and spice along with a dense, complex core of fruit along with supple tannins and good acidity. This wine is approachable and drinkable now with a few hours of aeration and will handsomely reward the connoisseur who has the patience to put this away in the cellar for 5-15 years. If you’ve been lamenting the fact that most of the wines you used to love are now selling for well over $100 then try buying the 2010 Joseph Phelps Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley and you can pretend it is 1997 all over again.

The 2007 Etude Pinot Noir Carneros is absolutely intoxicating. It has great balance and complexity while never losing its tension on the palate. The finish is long and graceful with flavors of red berries slowly fading away on the 30-second-plus finish.
