2014 Rhys "Alpine Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

A beautiful, elegant wine. The nose is savory and perfumed with notes of olives and jasmine tea and violets. On the palate there is a graceful, seamless texture with an enormous sense of poise and balance. The finish is epic. In short, it's a wine that is drinking really well right now with everything falling into place. Gorgeous.

This is absolutely delicious, lifted and very aromatic, exuding notes of candied violets and orange zest. I love the texture--a medium body with a dry finish. If Gamay and Muscat were to have a baby this would be it. This is going to be in heavy rotation for me this summer.

2015 Giuseppe Cortese "Rabaja" Barbaresco

This is a gorgeous wine. Rose petals and black tea leaves and an epically long finish. There is an understated elegance here; it's not showy or flashy at first, but once you take a sip, you realize this wine has got the goods. I'd invite it home any day.

2015 Domaine Les Pins Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes

This reminds me why I love Cab Franc--what an ethereal and complex grape! And what a lovely wine. It has savory notes of curry, incense, and tobacco all underpinned by bright berry fruit and silky tannins. A medium body and a long finish that'll have you contemplating what you just tasted for minutes after. All this for $16.99. A steal! Put a big cassoulet in your crock pot and then pop this baby open alongside it for a perfect dinner.

2017 Gentilini Robola of Cephalonia Greece

A high-acid, fresh wine exuding aromas of lemon zest and citrus oil. There's a broadness to the palate, and it would pair up nicely with Parmesan cheese or aparagus risotto. Grown in the Cephalonia region of Greece, on one of the Ionian Islands, which is increasingly getting some spotlight for its awesome wines. The vineyards are near the ocean and there's a sea-kissed, sun-kissed vibe to this. Certified organic.

2015 Bodegas Palacios Remondo "La Montesa" Crianza Rioja

Bright and fresh Garnacha with juicy cranberry, raspberry, and currant flavors. This has an elegant, medium-weight texture that makes it great for weeknight pork chops or weeknight porch pounding. Producer Alvaro Palacio is a bright star in Spain's winemaking firmament, and this is an easy wine to love.

2016 Domaine de la Janasse "Tradition" Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Silky and rich like bassy jazz, this CdP opens up on the palate, revealing sweet, deep, rich fruit notes of dried figs, chocolate raisins, and creme de cassis. It's full-throttled and sexy with fine, melted tannins. But there's enough of a backbone there to keep it interesting. It'll drink great on its own or with a big beef stew. Throw in some of that bassy jazz, and you've got yourself an evening.

2016 Domaine de la Ganse Vacqueyras

This is a bright, juicy charmer, with lively acid and tons of personality--its energy is almost Richard Simmons level! On the nose there are notes of red berries that smell like they're fresh off the tree, leading to a sprightly, spicy palate and firm tannins. This would be lovely with sausages and cheese, or maybe even a gazpacho. What's even better is that winemaker Coralie Onde farms her estate organically and biodynamically. A super fun wine.

2017 Palafox Rosé Baja California

Big things are happening down in Baja. Wineries are popping up left and right from both local and international winemakers. With so much quantity, the wines vary wildly, but the best of it is really exciting. One to watch is Lourdes Martinez Ojeda, who was the winemaker for Brane-Cantenac in Bordeaux before she and Henri Lurton decided to open up a winery in Baja. She's also making the wine for several different wineries in the region. Her Mission rose' from Palafox a highly elegant expression of this much misunderstood grape. It’s fun & funky with a golden raisin, beeswax, and mint character on the nose, but also a dry, lifted finish and bright acid. It’s delicious.

Miyasaka "Sake Matinée" Yawaraka Junmai Sake 720ml

This is from a 356-year-old brewery that is very well regarded among sake circles in Japan. The 24th-generation heir to the throne has been very innovative, collaborating with DJs, for instance, and rebranding a few of their sakes. It’s completely 2.0 for the sake business. The Miyasaki family has been making Masumi traditional sake, and he wanted to do something avant-garde, so he introduced the Sake Matinée, made in a session style (as in a session-style beer) with lower alcohol. It has a smooth, mild character and delicate flavors of citrus, wild plums, and vanilla. It's delicious and eminently, dangerously drinkable. Good thing for that low ABV!
