2018 Carillon de Angélus, St Emilion

Hints of violets and licorice in the nose and mouth. Quite floral and pretty upfront with a fair amount of tannin and structure in the back. Should come together in time very nicely! 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc

2018 Capbern, St-Estèphe
Review Date: 05-06-2019
Probably my Sleeper pick for the vintage! Lots of perfume on the nose, toasty, crunchy red fruits, long and elegant middle, firm tannic backbone but balanced. This is a case buy for me. 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 1% Petit Verdot

Review Date: 05-06-2019
The 2018 Beychevelle is loaded with tightly wound dark red fruits. Hints of mineral, earth and sweet herbs are followed by a lushly textured lingering finish.

2018 de Sales, Pomerol
Review Date: 05-03-2019
A blend of 69% Merlot, 16% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon is an unusually low percentage of Merlot for the property. This is one of the better younger de Sales we have tasted. The wine is fresh and pure, with an elegant mid-palate and silky tannins that linger on the finish. Quite round and fleshy in the mouth, with a wonderful purity. Excellent value from the Right Bank!

2018 Labégorce, Margaux (1.5L)
Review Date: 04-25-2019
Toasty and aromatic in the nose. Spicy, crunchy fruit. Quite ripe and fleshy in the mouth but with lots of freshness and finesse.

2018 Angélus, St-Emilion
Review Date: 04-25-2019
The 2018 Angelus is a big, dense and powerful wine underneath its upfront fruit and spice. The middle fruit is lush, concentrated and velvety, before the tannins grab you on the finish. This is a great cellar selection!

2018 Haut-Brisson, St-Émilion
Review Date: 04-11-2019
Made by the same team as Tour St Christophe, the Haut Brisson is dark in color with an exotic, spicy nose. The wine explodes in the mouth with hints of espresso, vanilla bean, mocha and blackberries. This wine is made in a modern style but is balanced and delicious. A sleeper in 2018!

2018 Tour St-Christophe, St-Emilion
Review Date: 04-11-2019
Dark purple in color with a toasty upfront nose, this wine shows intense black fruits, black licorice, coco powder, plums and smoke. Tannins are big but ripe. This should be a big winner for the money in 2018!

2017 Bishop's Peak San Luis Obispo County Chardonnay
Review Date: 02-20-2019
Wonderfully fresh and fruity, the Bishop’s Peak Chardonnay uses no new oak barrels in the fermentation process. Sourced from coastal San Luis Obispo County, the fruit gives off flavors of crisp melon, citrus and pear. Great buy for a refreshing California Chardonnay!

2016 Bishop's Peak San Luis Obispo Pinot Noir
Review Date: 02-20-2019
One of the Best Buys for under $20 in the store! This is a silky smooth and very drinkable Pinot Noir that would best be described as a “crowd-pleaser”! The red fruits, spice and savory flavors linger on the finish and seem to melt into your mouth. This is a great pick to go with lighter fare or even just as a cocktail before dinner.

2015 Bodegas Norton "Privada - Family Blend" Red Blend Mendoza
Review Date: 02-20-2019
The 2015 Norton Privada is made from a selection of the wineries best barrels of Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine shows lots of “New World” characteristics. Rich, opulent and toasty, this wine shows a wonderful core of dark, spicy fruit. Hints of olive and sweet herbs add a layer of complexity. This wine is ready to enjoy now but will also develop nicely in a cellar over the next 5-10 years.

2017 Olema Sonoma County Chardonnay
Review Date: 02-13-2019
The 2016 Olema Sonoma Chardonnay is a crowd-pleaser! It shows lovely fruit upfront which is balanced with a fair amount of acidity. The finish is not at all heavy, but still shows classic California Chardonnay hints of vanilla, ripe pear and tropical notes.

2016 Olema Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 02-13-2019
What a great buy in Cabernet! The 2016 Olema Cabernet is loaded with flavors of coffee, mocha, and black cherry cola fruit. This medium bodied wine shows a supple, round, silky texture that coats the palate. The finish is long and spicy. Tasting this wine blind one would think the price point would be closer to $40!

2015 Dierberg "Dierberg Vineyard" Santa Maria Valley Chardonnay
Review Date: 11-02-2018
The Dierberg Vineyard sits 13 miles from the Pacific Ocean. The cool influence of the ocean helps this wine maintain its acidity on the finish. Upfront, it is toasty aromas are followed by a mouth coating texture that follows with a spicy, lingering finish. The fruit is very ripe and bright.

2016 Chappellet "Signature" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 11-01-2018
The 2016 Signature Cab is a knock out! The inky dark purple color is followed by aromas of graphite and blackberries. In the mouth, this deep, rich Cab is loaded with flavors of blueberry, black cherry, coco powder, vanilla bean and mocha. Tannins are firm but integrated, while the finish lingers on for a good 30 seconds. This wine should really come together in a cellar and drink well over the next 10-15 years!

2014 Seghesio "Cortina" Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel
Review Date: 08-23-2017
The base for this wine comes from a Dry Creek Valley vineyard planted in 1972. Since this was a year before I was born, I think even by French standards this is considered “old vines.” Deliciously fresh and juicy, the Cortina Zinfandel glides across the palate with grace and ease. There is a wonderfully purity to the fruit in this wine. It is not heavy or overbearing but still a ripe, full-bodied wine. Alcohol is under 15%.

2016 Labégorce, Margaux
Review Date: 07-19-2017
Dare I say one of the best wines ever from this Chateau? Lovely freshness, juicy fruit, lots of complex mineral flavors mixed in with a ton of fresh bright fruit, this wine is still a value.

2016 Léoville-Barton, St-Julien
Review Date: 07-19-2017
The 2016 Leoville Barton shows dark concentrated fruits, minerals, cedar, allspice and a firm structure. This is a sturdy wine with lots of power. A good cellar candidate!

A real winner from the 2016 vintage for the money! This wine shows a wonderful silky texture with an exotic sweet core of red and black currant fruit that lingers on the finish. A sleeper!

2016 d'Armailhac, Pauillac
Review Date: 06-27-2017
I heard good things about this wine from our group that tasted in March. Generally I try to block out these comments but I feel they are well deserved with this wine. The 2016 D’Armaillac shows lots of spicy fruit with hints of cola, black cherry and blackberries. This is a sexy wine that should be a great pick to enjoy early and even upon release.

2016 Phélan-Ségur, St-Estèphe
Review Date: 06-27-2017
An excellent Phelan Segur that is packed with deep concentrated dark fruits, hints of graphite, minerals and spice. Fresh and ripe tannins, this wine is an excellent mid-term cellar pick!

2016 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac 6-Pack in OWC
Review Date: 06-26-2017
The 2016 shows classic Pichon Lalande aromas of earth, spice and clove. Upfront the wine is velvety, round and juicy. Elegance abounds in the mid-palate and the finish shows wonderful lift and verve. This is another example of a 2016 that far outshines the 2015.

2016 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Review Date: 06-26-2017
Very dark in color with intense black currant fruit, this is a wonderful Lynch Bages that far surpasses the 2015. It shows lots of power while still showing a velvety texture and mouthwatering finish. Tannins are integrated, ripe and fresh. This is the wine for the cellar but should still show well early on.

2013 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend
Review Date: 10-06-2016
First produced in the 1974 vintage, Insignia is the first proprietary Bordeaux-style blend produced in California. Beginning with the 2004 vintage, the Insignia is sourced from entirely estate-grown fruit. The 2013 vintage is a classic Insignia. It is dense, powerful and shows lots of structure but all of that is hidden underneath layers of fresh, ripe fruit. Hints of bittersweet chocolate, plums, vanilla bean and spice linger on the finish. A great effort on their 40th anniversary!

2015 Vieux-Château-Certan, Pomerol (1.5L)
Review Date: 07-13-2016
This one wowed us! Amazingly pure and elegant, with a velvety texture and seamless lush sweet core of fruit that goes on and on in the mouth; it is not a monster but the definition of elegance, balance and finesse -A blend of 80% Merlot, 19% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon.

2015 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Review Date: 06-08-2016
This is a lush mouth coating wine; hints of coco and vanilla bean in the nose is followed by fleshy fruit that feels broad in the mouth and carries through to the finish; there are no holes in this wine; the tannins are firm but ripe and are hidden by the copious amount of fruit. This is a very solid effort.

2015 Duhart-Milon, Pauillac
Review Date: 05-04-2016
Most times while tasting at Lafite “En Premier” I am puzzled by the majority of the wines, including Lafite but especially by this wine. Not with this time. This wine showed sweet and savory, loaded with ripe fruit while still maintain wonderful freshness and lift. This should be a drinker right upon release but has the structure, acidity and freshness to age well for mid-term cellaring.

2011 Coutet, Sauternes (375ml)
Review Date: 11-30-2015
Bright and lemony, very concentrated, intense and crisp, with laser beam focus and lots of acidity. One for the cellar.

2013 Lewis Cellars Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 10-05-2015
Lewis sources their fruit from a variety of vineyards throughout the Napa Valley. This allows them to capture different elements of the valley and combine them into a single expression of Cabernet from Napa. This new release is brimming with black and blueberry fruit with hints of cedar, coffee and vanilla bean flavors. The tannins are firm but integrated. The 2013 is still quite young and will be a good candidate to put away in the cellar for 5-10 years.

2012 Snowden "The Ranch" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 04-10-2015
This is a very approachable and drinkable 2012 Cabernet! It is loaded with supple, juicy fruit along with hints of minerals, cedar and spice. The wine shows excellent balance and acidity, which allows the wine to remain focused and fresh. The blend for the 2012 is 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petit Verdot. Delicious Napa Cab!

2012 Lewis Cellars "Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 02-25-2015
Nearly black in color, this concentrated Cabernet is loaded with dark black cherry fruit, licorice, and graphite, with hints of smoke and mocha flavors that linger on the finish. Despite this wine’s size and depth; it is remarkably round, supple and fresh. Tannins are big but ripe and integrated. Patience will be rewarded for those who can put this bottle away for 5-10 years but I doubt many bottles will make it that long, as this wine shows so well even at this young age. One of the best 2012 Cabernets we have had in the store so far!

2011 Joseph Phelps "Insignia" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend
Review Date: 11-04-2014
In warm vintages such as 2007, I feel Insignia is too much for me. The cooler 2011 vintage really allows this wine to still have that typical Phelps fruit but with much more restraint and a bit more elegance and finesse. This is a solid effort for the vintage!

2011 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 07-21-2014
Glass Full image Glass Full image Glass Full image Glass Full image Glass Half image
The 2011 La Jota Howell Mountain Cabernet is a super effort! In a vintage like 2011, if a winemaker tries to do too much with the wine in the cellars, the wine will come out rough, unbalanced and green. The 2011 La Jota was created with a light hand. It shows tons of spicy red currant fruit, minerals and cedar hints. There is a wonderful freshness that explodes from the glass! This is an earlier drinking wine that shows great right now with some air.

2010 Araujo "Eisele Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 09-04-2013
There has been a ton of hype surrounding the recent purchase of Araujo from the owner of Chateau Latour. Released Sept 1st of this year, the 2010 shows a great combination of elegance and power. The middle texture is lush, rich and seamless, while the finish is extremely long and spicy. The wine is still held together with a firm structure and plenty of acidity . Serious Napa Cabernet! It will be interesting to see what happens to this property after the sale. I know one of the goals will be to take Araujo “global”. Which, means less wine for us in the states. May want to buy now!

2005 Heitz Cellar "Martha's Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 02-28-2013
Classic Martha’s Vineyard aromas and flavors come through this vintage. Still quite young, this wine is seamless and balanced with a fresh lively texture. Tannins are firm and this wine should really flesh out over the next 5-10 years. One for the cellar for sure!

2009 Ducru-Beaucaillou, St-Julien
Review Date: 02-11-2013
Super-long, with great depth, a plush middle and a ripe, spicy finish. The tannins were fine and well-integrated.

2009 Pontet-Canet, Pauillac
Review Date: 03-07-2012
So sweet, plush and fruity that the tannins were hardly noticeable.

2009 Malescot-St-Exupéry, Margaux
Review Date: 03-05-2012
Another exotic wine, with loads of minerals, blackberries and a fleshy mouthfeel.

2009 Léoville-Las Cases, St-Julien
Review Date: 03-05-2012
This was one of the most concentrated wines of the trip, though it shows fantastic balance, finesse, and freshness.

2010 Palmer, Margaux
Review Date: 05-16-2011
Pure and seamless, with a sweet undertone of black currants and fleshy, big tannins. One for the cellar.

2005 Joseph Phelps Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Review Date: 06-18-2008
A very approachable blend of 90% cabernet sauvignon, 6% merlot and 4% petit verdot. About 75% of the fruit came from estateowned vineyards and 25% from independent growers. The 2005 vintage was unusually late due to mild temperatures. The wine shows lush and creamy in the mouth, with hints of vanilla, mocha, red cherry and plum fruit. Tannins are sweet and integrated.

Arette Artesanal Blanco Suave Tequila (750ml)
Review Date: 05-20-2008
Arette was founded in 1900 by the Orendain family. Since 1976 it has been produced and bottled by Eduardo and Jaime Orendain in their distillery “El Llano” in Tequila, Mexico. The Blanco is one of the most unique tequilas I have tasted yet. It is very bright and citric, with a lively palate and hints of oak. The Reposado is your sipping tequila: complex, deep and rich. Both are excellent, hand-crafted tequilas that I would highly recommend.
