Finishes firmly tannic and persistent, with a repeating note of menthol. (ST)" (05/2002) Wine Spectator: "Plump, supple and complex, with good depth to the black currant, plum, cherry and touch of balsamic vinegar flavors framed by modest tannin and generous toasty oak. 94 points Wine Spectator: "A tour de force. Deliciously rich and complex, with layers of juicy plum, black cherry, currant and wild berry shaded by anise, cedar, earth and mineral flavors, it fairly gushes with fruit on the finish, yet should age gracefully for another decade, maybe more. Best from 2004 through 2015." (06/2002) K&L Notes: 94 points, a 'Cellar Selection' wine and ranked #4 on Wine Spectator's Top 100 of 2002!
Price: $69.99

96 points Wine Spectator: "The color is dark and beautiful, and the fabulous aromas feature crushed blackberry, sliced meat and licorice, with some flowers as well. Full-bodied, with velvety tannins and a wonderful concentration of fruit. Long and caressing. This is just getting better and better. (JS, Web-2010)"
Price: $89.99

94 points Wine Spectator: "Very ripe and raisiny, with dried dark fruits and fresh violet and lilac. Massive and full-bodied, with velvety tannins and loads of fruit. There's wonderful balance at the same time. Can't wait on this luscious wine.—'99 Brunello blind retrospective (2009). (Web-2010) (JS)" Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Ruby-red. Roasted dark berries on the nose. Sweet, chunky and moderately ripe, with somewhat medicinal dark berry flavors. Could use a bit more definition and nuance, but has good texture. Finishes with slightly...

Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Bright medium ruby. Fresh aromas of blackcurrant, violet and powdered chocolate. Bright, spicy flavors of currant, currant leaf and spices, with a sweet, creamy quality in the middle. Finishes with dusty, fairly ripe tannins. (ST)" (12/2002) Wine Spectator: "Complex, with a mix of earth, mineral, dried currant, leather and dusty, cedary oak. Full-bodied and youthful, this is a bit drying on the finish, yet drinking very well. (JL, Web-2009)"

92 points John Gilman: "The 1999 vintage of Château de Beaucastel is a wine of indifferent reputation, as it falls between the very hyped (and far riper) years of 1998 and 2000, but to my palate, this is the superior wine, as it is quite classical in profile and does not have to contend with the higher alcohol levels of its two flanking vintages. The bouquet at age twenty is beautifully complex, wafting from the glass in that signature Beaucastel blend of cassis, fruitcake, pepper, bonfires, a fine base of stony soil tones, hung game, balsam bough and th...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Elegant, sweet, leather, currant, and foresty characteristics emerge from this medium-bodied, dark ruby-colored Margaux. It is well-made, with ripe tannin, elegance, and palate presence. (RP)" (04/2002) Wine Spectator: "Very perfumed, with lovely aromas of rose, blackberry and currant. Medium-bodied, offering very fine tannins and a delicately fruity finish. (JS, Web-2010)"

92 points from The Wine Spectator! - "Ripe and rich, with malt, minerals, blackberry, currant and mocha flavors in supple tannins. Fleshy, concentrated fruit lingers, along with toasty vanilla and cedar. Best from 2004 through 2012. - J.L."

93 points Wine Spectator: "An immense effort, dark, rich and deeply concentrated, packed with layers of rich currant, chocolate, mocha, cherry and herbal nuances. Finishes with a powerful, persistent aftertaste, rich, ripe tannins and wonderful complexity. (JL)" (11/2002)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate (an 8,600-case cuvee made from yields of 1.98 tons of fruit per acre) is considered by Bo Barrett to be a 'great' year. The wine boasts a saturated inky/purple color as well as extraordinary density of fruit and cassis, and huge tannin, body, and extract. It is a substantial, palate-staining, long, muscular Cabernet that should only be purchased by connoisseurs with cold cellars as well as patience. The Estate Cabernet Sauvignon remains one of California's most remarkable Caber...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The medium to dark ruby-colored 1999 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Champs Chenys Reserve has an Asian spice and blackberry-scented nose. This supple, chewy-textured, medium-bodied wine offers black cherry, blackberry, and freshly cracked black pepper flavors. It is zesty, lively, with loads of sweet tannin. (PR)" (08/2001)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "With a hard act to follow, the 1999 Chateauneuf du Pape Reserve Le Clos du Caillou showed beautifully and gave up complex spice-box, peppery herbs, game and tobacco-leaf-like aromas and flavors. A full-bodied, rich and layered Chateauneuf, it’s drinking at point, yet will continue to evolve gracefully for upward of another decade. (JD)" (08/2014) 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "From a site not far from Chateau Rayas, with a blend of reddish sand, chalk and galets roules; aged in a single ...

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "An amazing effort from Toro, it was made from yields of 1.5 tons of fruit per acre, aged 18 months in new French wood, and bottled with neither fining nor filtration. A black/ruby color is followed by an explosive perfume of sweet blackberries, cassis, licorice, minerals, and smoke. With great intensity, fabulously sweet tannin, and high glycerin levels, this wine establishes a new benchmark for the Toro appellation. (RP)" (08/2001) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Voluptuous international style. This lush Spanish re...

A dense ruby/purple color accompanies sweet notes of black fruit, charcoal, licorice, new saddle leather, and dried herbs. This rich, multi-layered, medium to full-bodied red possesses a lush, hedonistic mouthfeel, complex aromatics, and a fabulous finish. This is the real deal! Enjoy it over the next 6-8 years. 92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made from 100% Sangiovese and aged 12 months in French oak, the 1999 Flaccianello is immensely impressive. Its opaque ruby/purple color is followed by scents of high class French oak intermixed with black cherry liqueur, minerals, spice box, tobacco, and blackberries. Concentrated yet elegant, this sweet, pure, exceptionally long wine can be drunk now, or cellared for 10-12 years. 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 Eclipse (a blend of 66% Grenache and 34% Shiraz aged in American oak and bottled unfiltered) tips the scales at a hefty 14.9% alcohol. The wine has an opaque purple color as well as a fabulously sweet nose of blackberry and cassis liqueur interspersed with licorice, truffle, and vanillin. Full-bodied, heady, layered, ripe, pure, and sumptuous, it is a dazzling 1999 to drink over the next 15-16 years. 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1999 is another impressive Piano di Montevergine. This is a touch more powerful and rustic than the decidedly elegant 2001, but it is just as engaging. Smoke, leather, licorice, wild cherries and rosemary develop beautifully in the glass, along with suggestions of ash and game that add character and complexity. The 1999 is a decidedly powerful Piano di Montevergine that is rewarding today and should drink well for another decade, perhaps beyond. (AG)" (08/2010) 90 points Wine Spectator: "This takes no priso...

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The brawny, serious, opaque purple-colored 1999 Giusti dei Notre is a barrique-aged, unfined, unfiltered blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon and 35% Merlot. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by awesome aromas of weedy tobacco, espresso, smoke, chocolate, black currants, and blackberries. Dense, full-bodied, thick, viscous, rich, and pure, it requires another 2-3 years of cellaring, and should last for 15+." (10/2001) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Impressive aromas of smoke, berry, tar and tobacco. Full-bodied, wi...

This small production Pinot Noir from the Hyde Vineyard shows a deep, intense body with flavors of wild raspberries, vanilla, and cherries. The long and cool growing season in 1999 was ideal for Pinot Noir, especially in the Carneros region where the Hyde Vineyard is located.

88-90 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated deep ruby. Brooding, highly extractive aromas of blackberry, cassis, black cherry, bitter chocolate and licorice. Tightly wound and youthfully austere. (ST)" (10/2001)

One heck of a Cabernet for the price! Balanced, long and fresh, this Cabernet is an excellent example of what is to come in the 1999 vintage. The Simi Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 78% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 8% Cabernet Franc.

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The profound, dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Montiano (2,500 cases of 100% Merlot aged in 100% new French oak, and bottled unfined and unfiltered) offers a smorgasbord of aromas, including melted chocolate, espresso, blackberries, cherries, currants, and smoke. Full-bodied, with terrific purity, a multilayered texture, and surprising freshness for a wine of such depth, it can be drunk young, or cellared for 10-15 years. 90 points Stephen Tanzer: "(14.6%) Good full red. Red fruits, minerals, spices and a floral nuance on the nose. Dense, fat and ripe; the most opulent of these '99 pinots, with sweet flavors of strawberry, earth and mint. A wine of lovely texture and depth, if less delicate than the High Plains bottling. Finishes with firmer tannins. From a Swan selection, and harvested a bit earlier than most of Dehlinger's other pinot parcels, which are based more on Pommard." (Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, May/Jun 02) According to Robert Parker: "The dar...

94 points Decanter: "An utterly unique wine from four hectares of ungrafted pre-phylloxera vines which are trellised on traditional pergola systems, this was another astonishing wine displaying sagacity, complexity and an age-defying youthfulness. Aglianico often has a reputation for rusticity, but these ripe and molten tannins from prime volcanic soils were exquisitely full, polished and refined. The fruit still retained stunning sour cherry intensity, with a touch of balsam, coffee and cocoa on the powerful finish. Serpico is not made every year by Feu...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The shallow, infertile, rocky soils of Pritchard Hill have produced a dense ruby/purple-colored 1999 Cabernet Sauvignon with sweet blackberry and black currant fruit, loamy earthy notes, and subtle new oak. This elegant, medium to full-bodied, and well-balanced wine will drink well for 10-12 years. (RP)" (08/2002) Wine Spectator: "Tight and structured, with a complex mix of dried currant, mineral, sage, dusty berry and cedary oak flavors. (JL, Web Only-2009)"
Price: $79.99

92 points Wine & Spirits: "No tasting note given." (04/2002) 91 points Wine Spectator: "A powerful nose, with sweet tobacco and sultana, follows through to a full body, featuring ultrafine tannins and a long, long finish, as well as lovely texture. This needs more time. Still tight and structured. (JS, Web-2010)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Leoville-Barton ’99 has a well-defined nose, more restrained and extrovert than the Langoa, with notes of blackberry, wild hedgerow/woodland, Chinese tea and a dash of white pepper. Very good defi...
