2016 Miguel Merino "Mazuelo de la Quinta Cruz" Rioja
Top Pick!
96 points Tim Atkin, MW: "Varietal Mazuelos are very rare in Rioja, but when they're as good as this you wonder why. Late picked from poor, stony soils that face north-west, this is smooth, elegant and very elegant, with none of the grape's occasional rusticity, gentle oak spice, silky tannins and savoury red berry fruit. Wonderful stuff." A longtime player in the wine world, Miguel Merino decided that rather than retire, he wanted to fulfill his dream of owning vines and making his own wine. Based in the Rioja Alta town of Briones, Miguel Merino makes—a...

Vinos del Viento is our most recent addition to our Direct import portfolio from Spain. It is a project that focuses on Garnacha and Cariñena (Grenache and Carignan) from the region that is the origin for both varieties, Aragon. All of the DO’s of Aragon are represented in the portfolio; Campo de Borja, Calatayud, Carinena and Somontano. Winemaker Michael Cooper, who is a native to California, looks for purity and freshness in his wine. To do so he has sought our older vineyards that are found at higher elevations. The youngest vines are 35 years old...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2009 Vinyes Velles is a blend of two-thirds Carinena and one-third Garnacha. It is bestowed with a glorious, floral bouquet with very pure scents of cassis, blueberry and violets, all with pixelated delineation, almost Margaux-like in style. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins. It is taut on the entry, quite linear and then fans out nicely with sappy dark berry, cassis and allspice. This entrancing Priorat is very well-balanced, long and persistent towards the finish, with a structure that sugg...

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Vigno from Garage Wine Co. really blew me away! This always reminds me of the Truquilemu bottling, as the source is the same. This is elegant and floral in a way that very few Cariñena are. It has subtle minerality and an earthy touch, with a rare combination of elegance and rusticity. There is detail, filigree, texture and gobsmacking balance. Grab it if you like Cariñena, because it is among the finest in the world! It was bottled in December 2017. 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I love the 2016 The Ploughmen Carignan Field Blend, an elegant version of this field blend of Carignan, Garnacha and Mataró (Monastrell, they seem to use French, Spanish or American grape names interchangeably!) bottled exclusively for UK importers Bibendum. It has precision, elegance, balance and great freshness. It was bottled in November 2017. (LG)" (10/2018) K&L Notes: Derek Mossman began Garage Wine Company at a time when there were relatively few smaller, family owned wineries in Chile. He not only starte...

Winemaker notes: "Hand-harvested at night. Upon entering the winery, the grapes are hand-sorted, whole cluster into a 2-ton stainless steel lagar and foot-stomped. A native yeast fermentation takes place outside the winery, exposed to the cold Pacific Ocean air. After an extended post-ferment maceration, the wine is pressed off into neutral barrique. After 12 months, the wine is racked and bottled unfined and unfiltered."

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I was able to compare the 2015 Bagual Vineyard with the 2016, and the difference of character is notable. This 2015 is a lot more powerful and has a little more ripeness, while the 2016 is fresher and more aromatic. This seems to be aromatically dominated by Carignan, and the palate reveals some earthy rusticity I also often associate with the grape. However, 2015 seems to be a quite tannic year. Lot #66 was bottled into 1,588 bottles in November 2016. (LG)" (10/2018) K&L Notes: Derek Mossman is up to some trul...

Lioco has made a name for itself as a top-notch, boutique producer of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from choice vineyards in Mendocino, but they've also made room in their impressive line-up for truly unique little number. This 2018 red blend is mostly Carignan (93%) from a 70-year-old plot situated high on the slopes above Anderson Valley (2,400 ft. elevation). The remaining fruit is the little known Valdigue varietal from a nearby plot of 75-year-old vines. The wine is fermented with 100% whole clusters and put up in neutral oak for 11 months. It's easily ...

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 2007 Clos Pissarra "El Riu" Priorat. Producer Note: "El Riu (meaning "The River" in Catalan) is a 1 hectare vineyard (2.5 acres) in the town of El Molar in Priorat. We purchased this property at the end of 2004. This is an unusual vineyard in Priorat, as it sits on a slight slope above the Siurana River and although it is full of slate as is typical in the region, there is also a lot of gravel here, which is quite uncommon. The vineyard is planted to Carignan (Samso) vines that are over 100 years old! Yields are less than half a ton per acre."
