2016 Guido Rivella Barbera d'Alba

Guido Rivella had a multi-decade career as the winemaker for Angelo Gaja. Now retired, he and his daughter have a tiny estate in Barbaresco. This Barbera comes from a vineyard next to the Barbaresco vineyard "Cole." It is an eastern-facing, 1.4-acre piece. The wine is fermented in stainless steel for 12-14 days and then aged in used barrique for six months. Barbera has naturally high acid, but this wine shows exceptional balance and is supple and layered, with complex earthy aromatics.

2015 Giuseppe Cortese "Rabaja" Barbaresco

95 points James Suckling: "Wow. What a nose of pure blueberries, rose petals, lavender, crushed minerals, elderflower and so much vivid orange and candied citrus peel. Full body, electric acidity, firm and wonderfully polished tannins and a long, mineral finish. Drink in 2021." (07/2018) 95 points Wine Enthusiast: "This opens with aromas of ripe berry, crushed herb, scorched soil and dark culinary spice. Mirroring the nose, the firm full-bodied palate evokes juicy Marasca cherry, black raspberry, star anise and clove. Taut, tightly knit and noble tanni ...

2011 Agostino Bosco "La Serra" Barolo (Previously $55)

93 points James Suckling: "There's pretty balance and minerality to this spicy, finely textured and ripe wine. Full to medium body, fine tannins and a bright finish. This small producer continues to rock it." (04/2015) 92 points Vinous: "Agostino Bosco's 2011 Barolo La Serra is a terrific example of this high-altitude La Morra site. Specifically, the piercing veins of tannin that are such a signature of La Serra are very much in evidence. Red cherry, white pepper and chalk add to the wine's sculpted personality. The 2011 is a bit classically austere - ...

" (09/2015) 91 points Vinous: "The 2011 Barolo Neirane is a lovely, mid-weight wine that captures plenty of Verduno personality in its lifted, perfumed aromatics and bright, finely sculpted fruit. Sweet tobacco, amaro herbs, anise, dried flowers and cherry pit are all laced together in an attractive, gracious Barolo that will drink well now and for at least another handful of years. This is a strong showing from Bo ...

Real life and vigour and appetising austerity on the finish. 17/20 points. (WS)" (10/2015) Wine Spectator: "This is fresh, elegant and detailed, revealing cherry, strawberry, earth and spice notes. 2017 Vigneti Massa "Terra" (Piccolo Derthona) Timorasso Colli Tortonesi

One of the more interesting native varietals of grapes that grow in Italy is Timorasso. Unique, complex, capable of aging, and reflective of its terrior, it's definitely something to experience. Walter Massa is the winemaker/farmer who brought the grape back to life in the early 1980s. He remains the leading producer and go-to grower for Timorasso. Timorasso has substance and structure and pairs beautifully with richer dishes like salmon and pork loin.

If there is a vintage where blending has the potential to be the difference-maker, 2014 is it. So it is hardly surprising to find the 2014 Le Vigne in such great shape. The red cherry jam, mint, cedar and floral notes are all finely sketched. Medium in body and classy, the 2014 is beautifully textured and inviting from start to finish. 2015 Produttori del Barbaresco Barbaresco

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I tasted this wine after bottling but before its commercial release. The 2015 Barbaresco will hit the market on September 1st. It was scheduled to be released in October, but because Produttori del Barbaresco is already out of stock of the 2014 Barbaresco, they decided to move this release up and shorten waiting times. 2015 Poderi Colla Nebbiolo d'Alba

90 points John Gilman: "The 2015 Nebbiolo d’Alba from Poderi Colla is a fine, red fruity example, offering up an elegant and complex bouquet of cherries, anise, lovely soil tones, fresh oregano, roses and a topnote of woodsmoke. On the palate the wine is pure, full-bodied and beautifully transparent, with a good core, moderate tannins and a long, poised and gently tarry finish. This is very Barbaresco-like in personality and is a terrific value, but it could use a couple of years in the cellar to really blossom. Impressive juice. (Drink between 2020-2035 ...

Roberto Voerzio started his winery in 1986, so it’s not exactly ancient by Italian standards or even in Piedmont, which compared to Tuscany is a relative newcomer. Roberto’s winery is in La Morra, the furthest west of all the Barolo Communes and generally considered the most delicate. We’re still talking Barolo, yet Roberto’s wines are anything but delicate.
