Port

Port

Port is a fortified wine made by stopping the fermentation with brandy. The result is a heavy sweet wine, most often red, that is dense, rich and high in alcohol. Port is made all over the world with some great results in Australia and South Africa, but the most famous of these dessert wines come from Portugal. The great port houses (or lodges) below are located along the Duoro River on the steep slate slopes high above the valley floor. There are several styles of port, including Ruby, Tawny, Vintage Character, Late Bottle Vintage, Colheita, and Single Quinta. Vintage ports are made in special years that the houses declare. 1995 Taylor "Quinta de Vargellas" Vintage Port

94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Saturated ruby. Brooding blueberry, cassis, licorice and mineral nose complicated by a whiff of smoked meat; easy to pick out as Taylor in a blind grouping. Very concentrated, palate-saturating black cherry and black raspberry flavor. Thick and round but vibrant and delineated. Impressive extract. Explosive finishing fruit goes on and on. A very powerful port, but much more accessible early than a classic vintage Taylor. (ST)" (04/1998) 92 points Wine Spectator: "*#10 of the Top 100 Wines of 1998*A ...

2011 Dow's Vintage Port (375ml)

99 points Wine Spectator: "Powerful, refined and luscious, with a surplus of dark plum, kirsch and cassis flavors that are unctuous and long. Shows plenty of grip, presenting a long, full finish, filled with Asian spice and raspberry tart accents. Rich and chocolaty. One for the ages. Best from 2030 through 2060. *#1 Wine of the Year 2014 - Highly Recommended - Collectibles* (KM)" (02/2014) 96-98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2011 Dow Vintage Port was made from no less than 44 separate ferments from finest fruit sourced from Quinta do Bom ...

1997 Quinta do Noval Vintage Port

96 points Wine Spectator: "Shows a light lifted hint, leading to very expressive bergamot, blood orange and sandalwood notes, backed by darker steeped plum and raspberry fruit flavors. This has a warm feel through the finish, with a bramble hint echoing solidly. Gorgeous now, and there's no rush.—Non-blind Quinta do Noval vertical (May 2018). Best from 2020 through 2040. (JM, Web Only-2018)" 94 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep saturated ruby. Supersweet but vibrant aromas of crystallized dark berries, flowers, licorice and bitter ...

1985 Warre's Vintage Port

91 points Wine Spectator: "Ruby-colored, with grape, dark chocolate and plum. Full and chewy. Tannins are still there and need to mellow. Medium-sweet and grapey. A little one-dimensional still, but impressive. '77/'85/'97 blind Port retrospective. (JS, Web Only-2008)" 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This house makes rather restrained yet rich, flavorful vintage port and a very good tawny called Nimrod. Their vintage ports seem slow to develop... they have a unique mineral-scented character that gives them their own complexity and style. The 1 ...

1997 Fonseca Vintage Port

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Somewhat of a lightweight for Fonseca, but undeniably charming, this dark ruby/purple-colored wine offers a floral, exotic, flamboyant bouquet, a sweet, fleshy style, but not a great deal of weight or massiveness. Heady alcohol, sweet tannin, and a velvety texture make for a gorgeous finish. While I would have preferred to have seen more weight, structure, and intensity, this is an outstanding, albeit lighter than normal Fonseca. Quinta do Noval 10 Year Old Tawny Port

Light cinnamon and mineral nuances add to the streamlined finish. (JM)" (06/2018) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV 10 Year Old Tawny was bottled in 2016 with a bar-top cork and 106 grams per liter of residual sugar. Medium in body--well, it's a 10, not a 40--this has fine freshness and perfect balance. The juicy, delicious finish is irresistible and has more intensity of flavor than most 10 Ye ...

1994 Fonseca Vintage Port

100 points Wine Spectator: "Hold on to your hat. This is the best Fonseca since 1977, and it's probably even better than that classic vintage--more like the breathtaking 1948. Mind-blowing, with masses of color, aroma and fruit flavor. Smells like fermenting berries, boasting loads of crushed grape, violet and berry character. Big, full-bodied and very sweet, with tons of tannins and a sweet finish. Tannic and huge, it's a long-term, great Port. *Ranked as the Top Wine of 1997, Cellar Selection* (JS)" (04/1997) 98 points Decanter: "Tight knit – not giv ...

It's a very deep blue-black colour with an expressive, super-ripe nose of plum, mint and bergamot which springs from the glass. The palate is rich, velvety and voluptuous in typical Graham’s style. The initial richness makes the tannins, which show up on the ripe, broad, mouthwatering finish. ...

2017 Taylor Fladgate Vintage Port (Pre-Arrival)

98-100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Vintage Port, not quite bottled when seen but the final blend, is a field blend aged for approximately 20 months in wood. It comes in with 100 grams of residual sugar. A step up (or two) on the 2016, this shows fine depth, more focus, vivid fruit and serious power. It's not particularly thick, austere or astringent, but this is built for the long haul. It is potentially a great Taylor's, effortlessly combining brilliant fruit and structure. It tastes great now (today, it is far more vivid than its Vi ...

1977 Warre's Vintage Port

It was full-bodied with loads of flavor and an intensely flavorful finish. It was perfect to drink. " (06/2016) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Deep garnet. Very pretty plum and berry aromas, with hints of honey and toffee. Turns to custard. Full-bodied, sweet and fresh. Firm tannins, with elegance and balance. Will age for a long time, but ready. (10/2015) 93 points Wine Spectator: "Lovely, with date and persimmon notes that are melded seamlessly, picking up light bitter orange, ginger and green tea accents along the way. There's plenty here to like now, but this has ample energy for additional development.--1997 Vintage Port retrospective (January 2017). Best from 2020 through 2035. Taylor Fladgate Reserve Tawny Port (1L, Ships as 3L Due to Bottle Size/Shape)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The NV Reserve Tawny Port is a blend of multiple grapes, some in a field blend, with an average age of eight years in barrel. It comes in at 113 grams of residual sugar. This is something different—Taylor's normally does not make a Reserve Tawny. Then, it also was bottled in an historical bottle (the Mateus Rosé bottle in shape is close). Finally, it is a one-liter bottle, not a 750-milliliter one, so take that into account with the rather hefty price for a Reserve Tawny. With that price, even taking that one-lit ...

Ramos Pinto Collector Port

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark and stern, leaning more to figs and dried plums than sweet red fruits, this very expressive and intense Reserva has unusual power for a Ruby Reserva and plenty of concentration for the category. One or two may have been its equal, but there was no wine in this report that showed better after being held for another two days. Taylor 20 Year Old Tawny Port

It finishes with a hint of schist in the tannins. For fruit and cheese at the end of the meal." 1992 Taylor Vintage Port (Previously $300)

100 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Taylor's 1992 Vintage Port is unquestionably the greatest young port I have ever tasted. It represents the essence of what vintage port can achieve. The color is an opaque black/purple, and the nose offers up fabulously intense aromas of minerals, cassis, blackberries, licorice, and spices, as well as extraordinary purity and penetration. 99 points Wine Enthusiast: "This wine's dark garnet color with minimal bricking suggests a relatively youthful wine and this certainly could age longer, although it's also delicious now. Wonderfully complex floral and herbal scents easily move into deep, rich flavors of chocolate and cherries, sprinkled with a healthy dose of Douro minerality and spice. Drink or hold. 2016 Fonseca Vintage Port

98 points James Suckling: "Lots of ripe fruit here with raisins and wet earth that turn to violets and hot stones. Full-bodied, tannic and powerful with fantastic grip and intensity. Grabs you. 1970 Cockburn Vintage Port

91 points Wine Enthusiast: "Ruby color, with just a hint of brick at the rim. Mouthfilling red berries and plums, finishing with chocolate and peppery spice. Overall, it’s a bit austere, but pretty, and capable of another decade or two of further aging. Drink or hold. (JC)" (03/2004) Jancis Robinson: "Very dark ruby. (Darker than 1977.) A burnt, rather simple quality to this nose. Not much subtlety. Thick on the palate with very marked sweetness. Hot finish. Thick, sweet and almost New World! (JR) 17.5/20 points" (09/2012)
