92 points Vinous: "Deep ruby-red. Very perfumed aromatic nose of sweet spices, red cherry and blueberry. Suave and polished, with a multilayered quality to the fruit and mineral flavors present. Closes long and floral with a welcome nuance of ripeness. (ID)" (08/2019) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Graphite and baking spice aromas wind through rich and ripe boysenberry coulis flavors in this fresh and well-knit red. Medium- to full-bodied and elegant, with fine tannins and accents of brown bread and tangy, iron-laced mineral. (AN)" (10/2019)

Giovanni La Fauci's winery is located in Randazzo on Mount Etna and uses only the finest quality local varieties: Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. The vines are cultivated naturally and sustainably without any use of chemicals. The grape must is only fermented with native yeasts and the wine is then aged in botti from 220 to 500 liters for a minimum of two years. No stainless steel is ever used. The botti are stored in a natural underground cavern that maintains a temperature between 46 to 52°F all year. Racking takes place respecting the lunar p...

Back In Stock!
Now in their fifth generation, the Di Giovanna family cultivates their organic vineyards near the small town of Sambuca di Sicilia, which is located in the protected nature reserve of Monte Genuardo. From the winery: "This aromatic and refreshing white wine is a blend of un-oaked Chardonnay, Grillo and Viognier from our vineyards in Contessa Entellina. Each varietal is harvested, de-stemmed, and macerated separately. Each variety is fermented separately, temperature controlled, in stainless steel tanks. After around five months on the fine lees, with reg...

2018 Gulfi Cerasuolo di Vittoria
Top Pick!
Ian D'Agata writes: "This is the estate that focused everyone’s attention on the need to bottle single-contrada Nero d’Avolas – something that, unlike on Etna, has only started to take hold recently on the rest of the island with grape varieties other than Carricante or the Nerellos. In fact, at Gulfi, the Catania family recently planted a few more hectares to bush vines of Nero d’Avola in both the Maccari and Bufaleffj contrade. Co-owner Matteo Catania strongly believes in the grand cru quality of Pachino’s exceptional Nero d’Avola wines and is working ...

2016 Paolo Caciorgna "Guardoilvento" Etna Rosso
Top Pick!
95 points James Suckling: "The nose here is quite unlike anything else, exuberant dried-cherry kernels, ash and sweet tobacco lead, before Christmas pudding and leather take center stage. The full-bodied palate has Barolo-like richness with structured tannins and a colorful spectrum of dried fruit." (08/2019) K&L Notes: Paolo Caciorgna has amassed an impressive resumé (current winemaker at Montalcino's Altesino and La Serena, among others), but it was a small surprise when in 2006 he decided to add to his stable of projects the resurrection of two very...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The beautiful 2018 Etna Bianco by Alberto Graci has plenty of citrus and stone fruit, all followed by that glossy aroma of natural rubber that I adore in a white wine. Of course, the mineral delivery is also there, front and center. Graci's interpretation offers more in terms of mouthfeel and texture than most of his peers. This opens the wine to a pairing with grilled fish or even crab cakes. This Etna Bianco exhibits endnotes of white peach, honey and aniseed. (ML) 91+" (10/2019) K&L Notes: Indicative blend: ...

Aged in stainless steel for six months prior to release, the Ibidini Nero d'Avola is a classic example of the no-nonsense, broad appeal of this varietal. Fresh and vibrant red fruits form the profile, making this an ideal pairing with simple meat dishes and a variety of charcuterie. From the producer: Wines produced for Tenuta Ibidini, Valle dell’Acate’s second label, vary widely and are intended for casual consumption. The name was inspired by a company-owned estate – Bidini – where some of the family’s ancient grapevines are located. These vines provid...

Impressive for its purity and refreshing mineral qualities, Valle dell'Acate takes the Insolia varietal to a whole new level of quality. As a second label, the Case Ibidini range (pronounced 'bidini) consists of varietally labeled wines from the estate intended for more casual consumption. The local name of the area where the estate is situated, Bidini, is drawn from the ancient root Bidis. This in turn referred to the name of a group of early Hellenic settlers who populated the area nearly 20 centuries ago. These wines provide a purity and authenticity ...

The Mothia winery is in the most westerly portion of Sicily in the city of Marsala. This 100% Nero d'Avola comes from a vineyard whose toes touch the Mediterranean, giving it a bit of saline character. The winery produces both whites and reds as well as Marsala.

Monica Larner writes: "Paolo Caciorgna is originally from the Marche region in Central Italy and he enjoyed a long winemaking career in Tuscany. He came to Etna in the early 2000's and bought his first half hectare of vineyard in the Contrada Santo Spirito in 2007. His holdings soon grew to two hectares of land."

92 points James Suckling: "Very finely textured with rose-petals, strawberries and light cedar. Medium body. Caressing and beautiful. Drink now" (10/2018)

93 points Vinous: "Bright red. Inviting, perfumed aromas of violet, pomegranate, nutmeg and cilantro. Then lovely and lively in the mouth too, with similar flavors to the aromas. Finishes long and clean, with a vibrant peppery quality. Very different from the 2017 Frappato, but I can see how both will have their respective fans, so I’ll be magnanimous and won’t pick sides. (ID)" (08/2019)

90 points Vinous: "Luminous, very pretty deep red color. Fresh red cherry, berries and flint on the enticing nose. Then crisp and juicy with lively herbal and floral nuances to the red cherry fruit flavors. Finishes long and vibrant with hints of fresh ginger and minerals. A lovely entry-level wine. -- Ian D'Agata" (08/2019) 90 points Wine Spectator: "A fine and harmonious red, with a bright tang of acidity and smoke-tinged minerality, offering a creamy mix of crushed cherry, pomegranate and grilled thyme flavors, expanding on the palate and firmed by ...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Graci's 2018 Etna Rosato boasts a pale pink color with mild highlights of copper and gold. The wine is slightly closed at the beginning (with a tiny touch of reduction that blows off) but opens eventually to reveal rose petal, cassis and cranberry. There is a touch of wild herb or dried basil leaf as well. (ML)" (10/2019) Vinous: "Copper-tinged yellow color. Vanilla, sweet herbs and balsamic oils complicate aromas and flavors of strawberry and fresh herbs. Zingy but harmonious acidity provides both clarity and cut on the...

91 points James Suckling: " For a basic Etna bianco, the concentration here is very impressive, as it delivers citrus, nectarines and Granny Smith apples. Lots of energy on the medium-bodied palate, in the form of crisp acidity and a zippy finish. Drink now." (04/2019)

91 points Wine Spectator: "A finely meshed red, with round and creamy tannins woven with a subtle streak of smoky mineral. Offers flavors of dried cherry and raspberry fruit, a touch of cured tobacco and accents of ground white pepper and citrus. Lightly chewy on the lingering finish. (AN)" (10/2018) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Graci 2016 Etna Rosso is a mid-weight wine from the Sicilian volcano with pretty berry nuances followed by smoke, tar and light spice. The wine is moderate in mouthfeel intensity with polished, silky tannins. T...

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Etna Rosso Serra della Contessa is a unique wine from a unique vineyard site located 500 meters above sea level on the southern Viagrande flank of the volcano. It does not fit squarely into the Etna Rosso mold. It flaunts those differences with pride. This wine is based on Nerello Mascalese, with a smaller part Nerello Cappuccio. There is a pronounced balsam element with some spice and dark herb that add an almost savory or meaty quality that you don't get from wines made on the north side of the volcano...

90 points Vinous: "Deep red. Slightly musty at first, then opens with air to offer musky notes to the red fruit and floral aromas on the slightly aromatically compressed nose. Enters rich and luscious then turns mountingly austere and tannic with an underlying green streak that adds complexity but also a tough edge. A little alcohol-derived heat also emerges in the back. Maybe, I caught this at an awkward moment, as this is usually one of Gulfi’s best wines every year. (ID)" (08/2019)

94 points James Suckling: "Loads of lemon-grass, strawberry and fresh-basil character. Full to medium body, soft and silky tannins and lots of fresh fruit and intensity. Goes on for a long, long time. Delicious." (10/2018) 90 points Wine Spectator: "A creamy, spiced red, showing dusty tannins layered with flavors of macerated cherry, sage, slivered almond and orange peel. Chewy finish. (AN)" (10/2018) K&L Notes: In the early 2000s Paolo Caciorgna, a consulting enologist, accompanied the famed Italian-American wine exporter Marc de Grazia to Mount Etn...

The Amara Amaro d'Arancia Rossa is easily the best amaro we have in stock, bringing new life to a category that was just beginning to get a bit saturated. Made in Sicily from blood oranges grown near the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna, it's a citrus-dominated liqueur with only a slight bitterness that marries well with hints of baking spice. The finish is like the purest expression of citrus peel in a spirit, giving the Amara a versatility that is simply off the charts. You can sip it after dinner as a digestivo, add soda water to make a spritz, mix it into...

2015 Pietradolce "Barbagalli" Etna Rosso (Pre-Arrival) (Pre-Arrival)
Top Pick!
95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Here is a wine I always look forward to tasting. The 2015 Etna Rosso Barbagalli is made with extraordinary pre-phylloxera vines that range up to 120 years old. You definitely taste the rich concentration and focused aromatic intensity that is so unique to old vines. This wine is characterized by the very steady, slow-paced nature of its aromas that unfold with elegance and grace. Small forest berry is followed by licorice, tar and dried violets. To the palate, the wine is very firm, tightly knit and embroidered w...

93 points Wine & Spirits: "Nino Caravaglio’s winery is on Salina, the central island of the volcanic Aeolian archipelago, just off Sicily’s northwestern coast. He inherited about five acres in 1989 and has built his estate’s vineyard holdings to almost 50 acres spread across several of the Aeolian islands, much of it planted to Malvasia delle Lipari, all of the vines organically farmed. Three of Caravaglio’s Malvasia wines are recommended here, including Occhio di Terra (“eye of the earth”), a selection of the ripest grapes grown in Salina’s sandy, rock-...

95 points James Suckling: "Really exotic with strawberry and apricot character. Some pumice, too. Full body, chewy yet so lively and energetic. Love the finish." (10/2017) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is not considered an easy vintage on Etna, but Graci has pulled off stellar results regardless. I am impressed by the elegance shown by this wine. The 2015 Etna Rosso Arcurìa demonstrates the enormous strides made by this landmark winery. The mouthfeel is silky and bright and almost weightless in texture. Don't be misled, because there i...

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Peloro Bianco is a blend of Grillo and Caricante (this estate spells the grape with one "r") with linear and sharp edges. The Grillo grapes add snappy freshness and linearity, while the Caricante is more neutral and more impactful in terms of mouthfeel. This is a fresh and zesty wine to pair with fried avocado or that fatty tuna belly sushi roll, otoro. No oak was used. (ML)" (10/2019)

93 points Vinous: "Bright pale straw. Intense aromas of white flowers, stone fruit and pungent herbs with a dusting of minerals. Very clean and fresh, with hints of licorice to the chewy stone fruit and pomaceous orchard fruit flavors. Finishes long with a mineral undertone. One of the best Etna Biancos from Le Vigne di Eli in years. (IA)" (08/2019)

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This is one of the most interesting and expressive wines to come from the Vittoria area of Sicily. The 2018 Frappato is tonic and sharp, linear and direct. But don't assume that this is an easy wine: It reveals more depth and nuances than you might expect. What I love most about Frappato is that it always renders a naked, authentic and transparent expression. That frankness is here too, but the folks at COS have brilliantly added their own little tweaks with touches of balsam herb and bitter almond that appear ra...

90 points Decanter: "A benchmark Etna white made from 100% Carricante grown on the slopes of the iconic volcano. This is mineral and bright with fleshy green apple and greengage masked slightly by delicate woodsmoke. Fermentation and maturation in stainless steel help retain an attractive freshness and zippy acidity. (CW)" (03/2019)

93 points Decanter: "There are fragrant red fruits on the nose, which is still reserved. The attack is intense and sleek, with lifted red fruits and tannins that are assertive but polished. Spicy and linear, it’s also grainy and very persistent. Admirable purity here. (SB)" (03/2018) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Etna Rosso Rovittello is 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio from vineyards in the Contrade Dafara and Galluzzo in the Rovittello subzone of Castiglione di Sicilia. This is a beautiful wine from the Benanti fam...

94 points Vinous: "Deep red. Perfumed violet, rose and red cherry. Profoundly rich and round but still very young, with chewy, slightly tough tannins and lots of vibrant acidity extending the mineral red cherry flavors on the back end. Made from the south-eastern slope of Mount Etna from very old vines planted at about 500 meters above sea level. Well done; this is potentially very great. (ID) 94+" (08/2019) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2014 Etna Rosso Serra della Contessa (made with 90% Nerello Mascalese and 10% Nerello Cappuccio) com...

91 points James Suckling: "Aromas of bright berries and orange peel with some ash undertones. Medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant with a hot-stone and dried-cherry aftertaste. " (10/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made according to the classic blend of 60% Nero d'Avola and 40% Frappato, the 2015 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico is a textbook interpretation from one of my favorite red wine appellations in Sicily. What I love about Cerasuolo di Vittoria is that it delivers some of the most accessible, elegant and food-friendly wines you can find in Sici...

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico is a very nice wine that shows a smooth texture and a delicate approach that grows in intensity. There are small-berry aromas with cassis, wild raspberry and dried blueberry, which would spruce up any pasta like a Sicilian pasta alla Norma. A blend of 40% Frappato and 60% Nero d'Avola aged in oak barrels for 12 months, the wine is delicate and smooth, with tiny steps that go the long haul. The tannins are well integrated and give the wine a firm, upstanding backbone. (ML)" ...

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Spicy apples and pears as well as sliced grapefruit and pomelo, hay and hints of herbs. Medium body, a fairly textured center palate, fresh acidity and a fruity finish. (KO)" (10/2017) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Made with a blend of 70% Carricante and 30% Catarratto, the 2016 Etna Bianco is a wine that invites easy (and happy) drinking. This is a streamlined and tonic expression with salty mineral tones followed by white peach and Golden Delicious apple. The Graci trademark is balance, and this wine shows impe...

Vinous: "Bright straw. Curious notes of sausage, fennel and white flowers on the atypical nose. Then bright and juicy, with good inner-mouth perfume to the herbal and meaty flavors. Finishes glyceral and with lemony bite. … (ID)" (09/2017) K&L Notes: Indicative blend: 60% Carricante, 40% field blend of Minnella, Malvasia, Catarrato, Moscatello.

Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 2014 Pietradolce "Vigna Barbagalli" Etna Rosso (97RP, 94JS, 94WE, 92VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "It's hard not to be moved by the extraordinary 2014 Etna Rosso Vigna Barbagalli. This wine is soaring in character and quality and is fast on its route to becoming one of the icons of vino Italiano. It's hard to know where to start. Many great Etna reds are Burgundian in character, but oddly, this wine appears more Bordelaise, especially in this excellent vintage. The wine is beautifully conditioned and fine, yet it is exuberant and fruit forward at the same time. It opens to delicate aromas of dried flowers, spice, wild berry and black currant. The tannins are extremely well managed and they appear silky and firm on the close. The wine has all the right qualities, from acidity to pristine primary fruit, to promise a long aging window. (ML)" (08/2017)
