Cognac

Cognac

Cognac is named after the town of Cognac in France. It's a brandy produced in the region surrounding the town and among our favorite spirits. Three grape varieties are used in making Cognac: Ugni Blanc, Colombard, and Folle Blanche. Charente is divided into different districts with different geological and physical characteristics. A worthy but less famous brother of Cognac, Armagnac is actually much older than Cognac. The first document mentioning it dates from the fifteenth century (1461). It is produced in the region of Gascony. Find Armagnac here.

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "Light, crisp and mixable if so desired, this brandy is scented with aromas of golden raisin and honey. On the palate, a flash of vanilla sweetness gives way to notes of oak, tea, allspice, leather and cocoa. (KN)" (12/2013) 91 points Vinous: "Pierre Ferrand doesn’t use VS, VSOP, or XO on its labels, but this flagship bottling from Grande Champagne has an average age of around 10 years and is about 10% Colombard along with the Ugni Blanc. Golden honey in color, with a floral nose of violet and rose and a bit of fresh-cut flow...

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This pours a bright amber color, with restrained but beautiful aromas of white flowers, orange, peach and honey. On the palate, it's full-bodied, with bitter orange peel and stone fruit flavors, with lingering vanilla and oak. The alcohol feels relatively balanced, but it creeps up on you. This needs dilution, so use it in punches as intended and you'll be fine. *Best Buy* (KN)" (12/2013) K&L Notes: 94 points, "Highly Recommended," from the 2012 Ultimate Spirit Challenge.

This Grand Champagne Cognac from Ragnaud represents our dedicated efforts to find excellent Cognac without the use of additional sweetners or traditional boise. Distiller Jean-Marie has spent the last 30 years perfecting his pot-still brandies into delicate expressions of the fantastic terroir in the area. He is a firm believer in the idea that the limestone-rich soils of Grande Champagne produce wines that, when distilled, create brandies capable of aging in barrel for eternity. While we originally came in search of single-barrel Cognac, we tasted a few...

Bach Gabrielsen Tre Kors is a lovely blend of Grande and Petite Champagne (25%) and Fins Bois (75%) grapes. Aged in Limousin oak for a minimum of 2 years, this Cognac takes on a remarkable amber hue despite the minimal usage of caramel and boise additions. The inclusion of young Grande Champagne fruit keeps the spirit extremely bright and fresh providing a lively acidity without sacrificing the rich, round, and soft palate. This combination of little sugar, fruit forward flavors, rich texture, and extraordinarily affordable price, makes this the perfect ...

Dudognon Heritage 40 year Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
93 points Vinous: "A fascinating 40-year-old spirit – Speyside by way of the tropics. Expressive aromas and flavors of both fleshy exotic fruit and salty sea air reminiscent of Scotch, plus a healthy dose of rancio. On the palate, it’s expansive and amiable, but followed by a long, serious, very dry finish full of astringent grilled walnut. Unique, but possibly a little confounding. (41 % abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: There is not a single cognac producer that exemplifies the importance of terroir more than the line up from Dudognon. Grand champagne,...

91 points Vinous: "Solid, good-value 10-year-old from Grande Champagne. Golden in color, offering bright, warm notes of apricot, plum and orange peel, with toasted oak, baking spice and bit of toffee coming on the palate. But the overall effect is light and lean. (40% abv) (JW) " (09/2019) Wine Spectator: "Cognac Dudognon Réserve Grande Champagne reflects the very core of Grande Champagne's potential in its silky, layered glory. " (12/2014) K&L Notes: The Dudognon family has produced Cognac in the small town of Lignieres-Sonneville since 1776. This r...

Dudognon "Vielle Reserve" Cognac (750ml)
Top Pick!
95 points Vinous: "Age makes all the difference in Grande Champagne, and at 20 years old, this Cognac has begun to show its elegance and depth. Pronounced aromas of dried rose, peach jam, marmalade, toasted nuts and the beginning of rancio glide softly on to a palate of baked, spiced pear, warm pastry, and a savory note on the finish. My favorite of the Dudognon collection. (40% abv) (JW) " (09/2019) K&L Notes: The Dudognon Family has another winner with their Vielle Reserve 20-year-old cognac. It is exclusively from Ugni Blanc grapes grown in Grande C...

Distillation of eau de vie at Chateau Ravignan dates back officially to at least 1791 during the French Revolution, but by historical account back to 1731. That’s when the ancestor of Josselin de Ravignan purchased the estate and declared on an official record that some of wine made from the property’s grapes would be used for distillation. At that time, however, it wasn’t known as Armagnac. Distilled spirits were used for a number of medicinal purposes, poured into wine for fortification, and given to sailors to help disinfect their water supplies durin...

This wonderful VS is a benchmark for the category. Open, fresh and fragrant we're definitely on the more fruity and floral side of things, but a tiny hint of stewed apricots and oak spice poke through to give this lovely affordable Grand Champagne cognac the perfect balance. Voyer have owned 1er Cru vineyards in the most prestigious parts of Grand Champagne, Verriere and Ambleville, for 5 generations. While they're known for old ultra rare cognac, they're not ignoring the entry level like so many other producers in the region. They could sell this same E...

96 points Vinous: "Delamain’s youngest offering, at 20 to 25 years old, is also one of the standard-bearers of Grande Champagne (the blend was created in the 1920s and hasn’t changed). Light amber, with a delightful nose full of pear, marmalade, quince and orange blossom. The pear and quince carry onto the palate, where a distinctive membrillo-like flavor emerges — a unique note I find in a number of Delamain expressions. There’s gentle spice and warm citrus on the palate, gliding to a long, delicate finish. The definition of elegance. (40% abv) (JW) " (...

In response to growing demand for a cocktail-friendly cognac, Eric Forget, HINE's Cellar Master, collaborated with the French Bartenders Association to create H by HINE. The selection is a harmonious blend of 20 cognacs from grapes grown in the Grande Champagne and Petite Champagne, all aged a minimum of four years. TASTING NOTES: Spring-like, vibrant, refreshing. Appearance: Golden Bouquet: Intense nose of flowers, jasmine and mild spices Palate: Lively notes of fresh apricot and yellow fruits Finish: Expressive and velvety

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "Like the first Master Blender’s selection, this is a Cognac that will appeal to whiskey-lovers. The mild aroma offers hints of vanilla and prune. The palate surprises with a smoky note, though it’s soon engulfed by huge waves of vanilla, hazelnut and fudge. The long, luscious finish is tinged with orange peel and baking spice. Single batch. Though it’s not labeled with an age category, the producer says this bottling is made with eaux-de-vie that are at least seven years old, which usually would set it in the XO category. (KN)...

94 points Vinous: "It’s rare to find a VSOP made solely from Borderies, and the limited-release Camus Family Reserve is a unique bottling. The nose is lively and complex, offering dried fruit, candied citrus and even notes of pineapple cake, but there’s also a fascinating hint of almost rhum-agricole-like grassiness and burnt sugarcane. Delicate on the palate, featuring dried apricot, orange peel and cinnamon, and notes of struck stone and flint throughout. Beautiful, intriguing VSOP and good value. (40% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: ...

90 points Vinous: "From a 25-year-old single cask, selected from the Voyer family in Grande Champagne. Amber on the nose, with wet earth scents at first, then leather, then aromas like bananas Foster. On the palate, there’s earth and clay, dried cherries and tropical fruit. Pleasant and drinkable, but a bit unfocused. (45.9% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: The Through The Grapevine project is one of the most exciting Cognac collections to come to market ever. The distillate literally only sees a coarse particulate filter before bottling. Nothing is add...

Alexander Gabriel is at it again. The "Renegade" of Cognac is free to push the boundaries of what defines one of the world's most heavily regulated spirits. After discovering pre-World-War II receipts from Cognac makers for Chestnut barrels, he decided it was time to product a spirit that harkened back to Cognac's past. Partially aged in traditional French Oak and partially aged in Chestnut barrels, this spirit doesn't meet the letter of the law for modern Cognac and is therefore classified as Eau De Vie De Vin. It does however, taste incredible. The Che...

93 points Vinous: "This experimental blend of seven- to 20-year-old Grande Champagne is finished for 12 to 18 months in Banyuls casks. Light copper in color, it’s bright and fruity, with flavors and aromas of fresh citrus and stone fruit, but there’s significant rancio throughout. Banyuls is all about rancio, so that it makes sense, but the palate is very unique, almost the opposite of what’s expected: the spice and rancio come up front, followed by a finish of raisins and dates. A fascinating and tasty experiment. (42.3% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes...

95 points Vinous: "From a 45-year-old single cask selected from Fin Bois producer Rémi Landier. Amber, with aromas of candied orange, orange blossom and toffee. In the mouth, it’s rich, fruity and spicy, offering notes of marmalade, pear and cardamom, and an attractive cigar box finish. A muscular, rustic but elegant Cognac. (47.8% abv) (JW)" (09/2019) K&L Notes: The Landier family has been producing Cognac in Fins Bois since 1890. Five generations of knowledge and commitment to the land have provided them with some excellent old stocks and while their...

A. Edmond Audry "Memorial" Fine Champagne Cognac (750ml)
Back In Stock!
The house of A. Edmond Audry was founded in 1878 by the great-great-grandfather of the current owner. In the early 1950s, the Audry Company stopped selling cognac. However some very old stocks were held back in reserve in the hopes that Audry would one day rise again to the fore. That day came in 1978 when Bernard Boisson, a lawyer by training, decided to resurrect the family tradition that had remained dormant for four decades. The family stopped distilling in 1974, so Audry is made from blends of the original reserve and a few lots bought from a small ...

Special Order Only! Will take 3-7 days to receive this product before it can be shipped. Aged an average of 20 to 25 years, Antique is the definition of balance: light and delicate but still complex. It is a blend of Cognacs from the Grande and Petite Champagne districts only. Fresh fruitiness on both the nose and the palate, which is tempered by a welcome dose of rancio. The taste is smooth and supple, with floral notes, hints of honey, leather and a finish of fresh vanilla bean.

Francois Voyer is renowned for producing high quality ultra aged cognac from the most prestigous vineyards in Grand Champagne. The Chaquet-Voyer family first started growing vines in this special place since the French revolution. Five generations later, they're still committed to producing the highest quality eau-de-vie possible. Their Cognac spends more time in new oak than most, a minimum of three years, before being transferred into old cognac or hogsheads. All of the barrels come from the Limousin forest and are medium toast. The large cellars at Vo...

Marc Darroze formally joined his father’s artisan Armagnac firm in 1996 and soon thereafter took the helm. Over the next twenty years he developed close ties to farmers and producers in Armagnac and became intimately involved in distillation. In 2015 he decided to go forward with Bapt & Clem’s. With every spirit, the process was and is the same: Marc chooses one or two barrels (or makes a blend) from a distiller whom he has known for many years. The spirit has already been made and fully aged at its place of origin, and Marc’s choice, a deeply personal o...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "The aroma features fig, prune, pastry dough, honey and maple scents. On palate, Louis XIII offers long and intensely woody flavors; additional layers of flavor, including figs, dates, prunes, dried apricot and vanilla, are featured at midpalate. Finishes elegantly, warm, smooth and more oaky than fruity succulent. Only minor rancio." (10/2007) K&L Notes: Blended from 1,200 eaux-de-vie exclusively from the Grande Champagne region, and aged up to 100 years in century-old tierçon barrels, LOUIS XIII is one of the rarest spir...

96 points Vinous: "Slightly older than Delamain Pale & Dry, at 30 to 35 years old, this copper-colored XO is even more complex. There’s still orchard fruit, but also beautiful aromas of fresh wildflowers and wet earth. On the palate, it’s richer, rounder and expansive, offering more intense saline and spice notes, but there’s still the delicious note of quince and membrillo at the core, and a finish that goes on forever.
