2016 John Duval "Entity" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia (Elsewhere $40)

97 points James Halliday: "60% Barossa Valley, 40% Eden Valley grapes, open-fermented with submerged cap, matured for 15 months in new (33%) and used French hogsheads. Deeply colored; this is at once full-bodied and elegant, not a common marriage with young red wines with decades in front of them. The flavors are all black: blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, earth and licorice. The old vines have also provided ripe tannins, the whole theme resonated with oak a la Grange." (12/2018) 94 points James Suckling: "A ripe nose with the classic blackberry ...

2017 Torbreck "Woodcutter's" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

93 points Wine Spectator: "Aromatic and stylish, opening with violet, white pepper and subtle sweet cream notes. The core gushes with huckleberry and wild blueberry flavors, revealing shades of rosemary and apricot. Supple and smooth, with tannins hanging in the background, providing appealing traction. The finish sails on and on. (MW)" (05/2019) K&L Notes: The name Woodcutter's stems from David Powell’s several years spent working the Scottish highlands as a lumberjack in the Torbreck forest. This wine reflects the up and coming Shiraz vineyards of th ...

Top Pick!
2016 Hentley Farm Shiraz Barossa Valley

95 points James Halliday: "There's no magic in this wine other than the very high quality of the grapes (and the low price). The colour is typical Hentley Farm, deep, but with a vivid crimson-purple rim; the expressive black fruits bouquet and the medium to full-bodied, richly textured palate following the same path. The blackberry essence flavours are intense and luscious, bright and fresh." (08/2017) 92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of blackberries, blueberries and hints of licorice follow through to a full body, with very fine tannins and a soft fi ...

2017 Hentley Farm Grenache Rosé Barossa Valley

90 points James Halliday: "Vivid magenta-pink; the lively, bright spray of red fruits brings crisp red cherry and apple flavours alive from the outset and through to the finish. Crisp acidity leaves the mouth fresh, and thirsting for more." (08/2018) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Crushed stone, citrus rind and strawberries all mingle on the nose of Hentley Farm's 2017 Rose. It's not entirely dry tasting, but it remains light-bodied and refreshing, with enough bright red berries and citrus fruit flavors to balance any small amounts of residual sugar. ...

2014 John Duval "Plexus" GSM Barossa Valley South Australia (Elsewhere $44)

94 points James Halliday: "A 47/32/21% blend drawn from old vineyards in a number of districts, Krondorf the one constant, fermented with submerged cap (header boards), matured in French hogsheads (10% new). As is appropriate, complex, but largely fruit-driven, with red cherries/berries and plums to the fore, oak and (particularly) tannins taking a back seat." (10/2016) 93 points Vinous: ""(aged for 14 months in 90 percent used and 10 percent new large French oak barrels) Vivid ruby-red. Expansive aromas of ripe red berries, candied flowers and spiceca ...

2016 John Duval "Plexus White" Barossa Valley

94 points James Halliday: "Matured for 6 months in French oak. I'd really love to taste this wine in 3-5 years time. It's pleasant now, its balance and freshness admirable, but it's the potential for flavour and complexity development that is eye - or mouth - catching. It's specific to this wine, the blend common enough, but often bland." (08/2017) 92 points James Suckling: "A fresh and lively white with sliced lemon and pear character. Full body, bright acidity and a stone and licorice undertone" (07/2017) 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "T ...

1998 Veritas "Hanisch Vineyard" Shiraz Barossa Valley

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "With both the 1996 and 1998 Shiraz Hanisch Vineyard incredible examples of Barossa Shiraz. Both are dense and full-bodied with soaring aromas of black fruits, damp earth, camphor, pepper, and asphalt. The 1996 is slightly more structured and tannic, and the 1998 is more perfectly formed with a seamless integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol, and wood (the latter component has completely disappeared at age eleven). 2002 Greenock Creek "Alices" Barossa Shiraz

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Flamboyant as well as focused, with laser-like precision, the 2002 Shiraz Alice’s was produced from 7-year-old vines. Dense, with remarkable intensity and wonderful freshness, it is a cool climate Barossa Shiraz with good acidity, enormous concentration, and a backward style that promises to be ethereal with 4-5 more years of bottle age. It should last for two decades or more." (10/2005)

" (07/2011) 95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "A stunning effort, the 2002 Shiraz Command exhibits an inky/blue/purple color as well as a sweet perfume of camphor, blueberries, blackberries, acacia flowers, and smoky, toasty oak. Full-bodied, opulent, and viscous, with huge, but sweet tannin, decent acidity, and a muscular, long, 40+ second finish, this is a classic, potentially lo ...

2006 Greenock Creek "Alice's" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2006 Shiraz Alices is more dense and saturated than the Seven Acre cuvee. It exhibits a brooding nose of smoke, lavender, damp earth, game, and blueberry. Firm and a bit closed down on the palate, this structured effort is still tightly wound and will require extended cellaring of 6-8 years. It seems to have all the right stuff to ultimately reveal its full potential but time will tell. 91+. (JM)" (12/2009)

There are 1,000 cases of this full-bodied, intense, rich blockbuster. It will drink well for 10-15 years. 2002 Kaesler "Stonehorse" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia

94-96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2002 Shiraz Stonehorse is spectacular. It is indicative of just how special this vintage is in the Barossa. It is a teeth-staining, mouth-filling, extremely concentrated Shiraz displaying a level of quality that makes the 2002 Bogan and 2002 Old Bastard’s potential quality level look scary. The inky purple-colored Stonehorse offers a great perfume, beautifully integrated wood, and sensational richness as well as length. (12/2006) 94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Shiraz Reiver, made from 60-year-old Shiraz vines in the Greenock area of the Barossa, was aged 18 months in lightly toasted French oak. Sweet floral, black, and blue fruit aromas soar from the glass of this black/purple-colored 2002. Extremely full-bodied, deep, and chewy, with tremendous purity as well as texture, it is a remarkably well-balanced behemoth from South Australia that should age effortlessly for 15+ years. It is a compelling wine of great richness, multiple dimensions, and glorious levels of blackberry liqueur-like fruit intermixed with creme de cassis, melted licorice, espresso, and leather. Sweet, expansive, and opulent, it is a lusty, hedonistic, mouth-staining Shiraz that should drink well for 10-15 years." Bid on this bottle of 1999 Chris Ringland Shiraz Barossa Range South Australia (OWC - 98RP) in original wood. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The Chris Ringland (formerly known as Three Rivers Shiraz), is aged 42 months in 100% new French oak, and is rarely racked until bottling, represents an extraordinary expression of Barossa Shiraz. The intense 1999, released in 2004, demonstrates that this vintage is somewhat underrated after all the hype over 1998. From a vineyard planted in 1910, its inky/purple color is accompanied by aromas of lavender, lard, smoke, licorice, blackberries, cassis, espresso roast, chocolate, and pepper. Full-bodied, slightly less voluminous than the perfect 1998, with an unctuous texture, sweet tannin, and a 70+ second finish, this magnificent, still young Shiraz should be accessible in 3-5 years, and last for two decades.
