2017 Precedent "Kirschenmann Vineyard" Mokelumne River Lodi Zinfandel
Top Pick!
Precedent was founded by Nathan Kandler who fell into a career in winemaking after a summer stint as a bartender provided the proverbial "bite" from the wine bug. The Kirschenmann Vineyard is recognized as one of Lodi’s great old-vine Zinfandel vineyards. Planted in 1915 on its own roots, this organically farmed vineyard has fast become one of Lodi’s most prized sites under the stewardship of famed winemaker Tegan Passalaqua.

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2017 Zinfandel Steacy Ranch comes from a vineyard planted in 1907 to Zinfandel as well as Grenache and Carignane. It has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and very spicy, singular nose of black licorice, dried black cherries and dried blackcurrants with notes of stone and blue fruits at the core plus cedar and soil touches. Medium to full-bodied, it offers lots of spices in the mouth with wonderfully ripe, lush black fruits accented by peachy notes, framed by mouthwatering acidity and soft, grainy tannins, f...

91 points Wine & Spirits: "From a venerable old-vine Lodi site with plantings that go back to 1886, this light and chewy red has briary strawberry scents and juicy red-fruit flavors. It feels effortless and comforting in its texture, chewy and bright, with a pleasant prickle of tannin. Pour for poached chicken. (PJC)" (02/2020) K&L Notes: Winemaker's notes: "For those new to this wine, the Bechthold Vineyard, planted in 1886, reputedly constitutes the oldest block of Cinsault on Earth. This is an historic little neighborhood. The Shinn Family’s old Car...

KL Notes: Craig Haarmeyer is a third generation Sacramenten who has been responsible for coining the term "Sacramento Terroir". He and his family are responsible for all of production, from picking to bottling, and believe in celebrating the history, place, and naturalness of varieties grown around the Sacramento area. Favoring vineyard sites that are grown sustainably and organic, Craig believes in allowing the terroir to express itself with a hands off approach to winemaking, stating "We add nothing but elbow grease." *Natural Wine* ...

92-94 points Vinous: "Turley's 2018 Zinfandel Duarte is soft, fruity and absolutely delicious. The inky dark blue and purplish berry fruit and floral flavors are remarkably primary at this stage. This is such a pretty and expressive wine. I can't wait to taste it from bottle. (AG)" (01/2020)

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "This dry and complex wine offers gentle aromas of white flowers, crisp celery and green apples followed by a tangy white-peach flavor. Lifted acidity lends great balance in this rather light-bodied, bright and delicious offering. *Best Buy* (JG)" (03/2020) Connoisseurs Guide: "With a flowery overlay to its directly fruity aromas of ripe melons and white peaches, Dry Creek Vineyards' 2018 edition is a nicely filled Chenin Blanc that, while dry, consistently conveys so much persistent fruit that it intimates a sensation of jui...

92-94 points Vinous: "The 2018 Zinfandel Kirschenmann is a perfect example of what makes this vintage so appealing. Always a lighter, rather perfumed wine, the Kirschenmann has striking mid-palate sweetness and depth, both of which round the wine out beautifully. Ripe blueberry, mint and spice notes all run through this racy, expressive Zinfandel. (AG)" (01/2020)

Wine blogger turned winemaker William Allen felt "so strongly about a movement back to wines of balance, elegance, and modest alcohol," he writes on his blog simplehedonisms.com in the fall of 2011, "that after several years of pontification I...put my money (all of it) where my mouth is and started a new micro label (<300 cases) called Two Shepherds."

From the producer: "Maître de Chai translates to cellar master, or the person responsible for the development and aging of wine. By extension, the humble cellar master is the person responsible for the management of the winery. Established in 2012, Maître de Chai is the personal project of Marty Winters and Alex Pitts. Together we look to make wines of high quality in a way that best showcases the sense of place where the grapes are grown and the personality of the vineyard. From the ground to the bottle, the character of the wine is the focus of our en...

Winemaker's Notes: "For those new to this wine, the Bechthold Vineyard, planted in 1886, reputedly constitutes the oldest block of Cinsault on Earth. This is an historic little neighborhood. The Shinn Family’s old Carignane vines lay around the corner from Bechthold. The Shinns have been farming their land since the 1850s. Even the families are intertwined – Matt Shinn’s wife Evonne is a Bechthold. No wine is more emblematic of the Birichino style than Bechthold Cinsault Rouge. These are the only grapes on which we perform saignée. They grow in a very ho...

Evangelho Vineyard is another one of the truly great old vine vineyards in California—in fact, considered by some in the business as the gold standard for this type of old vine, own-rooted, Zinfandel-based field blend. Planted in 1890 in 30 feet of pure sand, this place is a sight to behold. A good chunk of Carignan and cool breezes off the Delta give this wine a beautiful freshness to balance the dense, rich fruit. Precedent is made by Nathan Kandler, a talented winemaker whom people need to pay attention to. Producer notes: "Winemaker Nathan Kandler ...

Winemaker's Notes: "Alicante Bouschet is one of the very few red grape varietals that also has red juice; a so called teinturier grape. Therefore, it has often been used as a mixing grape to impart color to other red wines with weaker color. But it’s less commonly allowed to shine on its own. I named this wine after another full color character that inspired me. My slight extended maceration gives this wine a subtle old world roundness and structure, without ever overpowering the fruit. A complex wine with lots of layers of forest berries, some subtle he...

Winemaker's Notes: "Mission, our signature grape, was brought to the New World by the conquistadores. The oldest grape in California, it has been mistreated and neglected for over a century. Today it’s a very rare grape, almost fully replaced by more fashionable varieties. But there would be no wine in California had it not paved the way for all the others, so I’m eternally grateful I get to be part of its new dawn. I’m obsessed with this variety and hopefully you’ll agree it makes a great wine. I think the mistake people have made in the past with Mi...

89-92 points Vinous: "Dried rose petal, crushed flowers, mint and savory herbs lift from the 2014 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard. In this vintage, the Kirschenmann is a bit richer and deeper than normal, the result of drought conditions that led to low yields. (AG)" (10/2015) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "From vines planted in 1915 in the sandy soils of Lodi, the 2014 Zinfandel Kirschenmann Vineyard (at 15.1% alcohol) shows Southern Rhône-like kirsch liqueur, strawberries, and an elegant medium to full-bodied style with plenty of fresh red...

From the famed Oakley Road Vineyard in Contra Costa with vines over 100 years of age, planted on their own roots and dry farmed. Winemaker's notes: "Wow. This might be the best wine we have ever made. Lifted floral aromas give way to silky smooth mouthfeel and flavors of fresh picked wild berries, licorice and underripe plum in this unique take on California Zinfandel. Bottled unfined and unfiltered after 11 months aging in old French oak barrels. Drink on its own or pair with just about anything, including turkey, pork, BBQ chicken, and vegetables redu...

Winemaker's Notes: "Despite being just one variety from one vineyard, this wine is made up of four separate fermentations of Petite Sirah from Contra Costa County. We experimented with varying amounts of whole cluster and a couple different levels of ripeness. This gave us a few tools that we could use to make an extra compelling Contra Costa Petite Sirah. This wine is light and layered and you can tell it is a different breed of Petite Sirah instantly. It is a soft, clear red in the glass and jumps out aromatically with juicy, red fruit, blackberries, a...

A spectacular cherry liqueur, albeit with no sugar added! This handcrafted product comes from the farm of Patti and Dominique Azpeitia in Stockton, CA. With 1,200 acres of cherry and walnut trees and the desire to do something extraordinary with their produce, the Azpeitias set out to make a one-of-a-kind spirited beverage with no additives of any kind. They juice Bing cherries from their estate, ferment it on site, and transport the juice to be distilled into eau-de-vie by Stillwater in Petaluma. The EDV is then added back to 100% cherry juice for a bea...

Wine note from owner Bruce Neyers: "This beautiful parcel of grape vines still takes my breath away. It combines all of the things we at Neyers Winery look for in vineyards. The soil is rocky -- uncommon for Zinfandel in California, as most of the acreage devoted to that variety is planted on sandy loam or clay. The rocky soil brings out a brightness in both the aroma and flavor of the finished wine, which enhances its complexity and makes it even more attractive in its youth. The rock found in much of this area is quartz, an igneous rock brought up from...
