92 points James Suckling: "A dense and layered red with lots of chocolate, berry and wood character. Full and chewy. Yet, the tannins are not harsh or overdone. Give it a year or two to soften." (09/2018)

2018 Rocca di Montegrossi Chianti Classico
Top Pick!
92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of blackberries, blueberries and flowers follow through to a full body with tight and silky tannins. A pretty and polished finish. A subtle and driven wine. " (06/2018) 92 points Vinous: "The 2016 Chianti Classico is a very serious wine in its peer group. Rich, vivid and beautifully layered, the Chianti Classico will give readers a very good look at just how compelling 2016 is as a vintage. Sweet red cherry, tobacco and menthol notes open up in the glass, but more than anything else, Rocca di Montegrossi's Chianti Clas...

(07/2018) 91 points Decanter: "Purchased as a hunting retreat by Raffaello Stianti in 1966, Castello di Volpaia encompasses an 11th century fortified village in Radda-in-Chianti. Today the estate includes 43ha of vineyards reaching up to 600 metres. For this wine, Merlot is included to make it more approachable, but it still has the potential to age. Red berries and earth notes reveal themsel...

In one of the most fascinating and suitable areas of the Chianti Classico area, near the hamlet of Monti in Chianti, about 7 km south of Gaiole in Chianti, there is the Rocca di Montegrossi company, whose owner, Marco Ricasoli- Firidolfi, is a descendant of the family he has written the history of the territory and Chianti Classico wine. The cellar is located near the Romanesque church of San Marcellino. The total extension of the company is 100 hectares, of which 20 are cultivated with vineyards, 20 with olive groves and the rest with woods. Even the o...

97 points James Suckling: "What a nose of clay, earth, crushed stones, rose petals, red licorice, baking spices, tar and Chinese spices. The level of sophistication to the red-fruited core, laser-sharp acidity and polished tannins, which grip and caress the palate, make this the greatest Chianti Classico ever made by Fontodi. From organically grown grapes. A long, long finish." (09/2018) 97 points Vinous: "Another captivating wine in this range, the 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is all class. A rush of dark cherry, plum, sage, la...

Hints of game, tobacco and cedar add nuance on the finish. (AG)" (09/2014) 92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good bright medium red. Very grainy and refined on the palate with a real kick from the orange-rind undertones that permeate the entire palate. Tiptoes like a tightrope walker between power and finesse and executes its mission nearly to perfection. Drink now or hold." This beautiful single-vineyard Sangiovese reveals a graceful side with dark fruit intensity, cherry, plum, fresh violets and tilled earth. 98 points James Suckling: "This is always an entrancing Gran Selezione and the 2016 shows dried raspberries, boysenberries, vanilla and brambleberries. Full-bodied and tightly wound with eye-catching minerality. The acidity sharpens out the exuberant red fruit perfectly. Incredible length and drinkability. Is this better even than the great 2015? I think so. From organically grown grapes. Drink in 2023. 98 points Vinous: "The 2015 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Vigna del Sorbo is flat-out stunning. Rich, ample and seductive, with tremendous intensity, the 2015 will go down as one of the truly epic wines of the year. All the elements come together in a deep, sensual Chianti Classico loaded with class and personality. I would give the 2015 at least a few years in the cellar to shed some baby fat, but it is very clearly a tremendous wine in the making, and even more impressive than it was last year. Wow! It boasts complex soils of calcareous clay layered with the chalky white limestone-like alberese and schistose galestro. This 2016 vintage is simply stunning. Ripe fruit coats the mouth yet it remains buoyant and tangy as chalky tannins charge in to frame the palate. A seductive wine with ...

Bid on this bottle of 1993 Castello di Monsanto "Il Poggio" Chianti Classico Riserva. In the early 1960s, Monsanto owner and winemaker Fabrizio Bianchi decided to take a big risk--he decided to make a single-vineyard Chianti Classico. He made the wine from grapes grown in the Il Poggio vineyard, fermenting them whole cluster in chestnut casks with the white grapes that were used in Chianti at the time. The wines were good, and so he continued innovating and developing, highlighting the grapes from Il Poggio all the way, making a name for himself as one of Chianti's most legendary wine producers.

Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Castello di Monsanto "Il Poggio" Chianti Classico Riserva. Jancis Robinson: "The vintages was rated five star by the consortium of Chianti Classico. A mild and fairly dry winter was followed by a cool spring. Abundant rains in June affected flowering, which naturally lowered yields. Summer was hot with virtually no rain and continuing well into September. Considerable differences between day and night temperatures resulted in elegant, perfumed wines. Fementation took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and the wine was aged for three years in large Slavonian casks of 50 hl. 20,000 bottles produced. Mid to deep ruby with a very narrow orange rim. Captivating and almost rich nose promising lots of extract, but much more closed than the 1985. Concentrated, sweet attack followed by powerful, quite demanding tannin. Integrated acidity, although not playing second fiddle by any means. Seems richer and yet more compact than the preceding 1985, and

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2010 Chianti Classico Reserva Rancia is chiseled and focused. It offers a full spectrum of Sangiovese characteristics with balsamic herb and medicinal tones followed by crushed stone and delicate clove or nutmeg. Rancia is equally impressive in the mouth with firm structure and enduring fruit flavors. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2030. This is one of the nicest collections of new releases by Giuseppe Mazzocolin’s Felsina. At the edge of the Chianti Classico and Chianti Colli Senesi denominations, the estate c...
