1976 Pétrus, Pomerol (very high shoulder fill, torn label)

Jasper Morris, MW writes: "Pétrus, one of the world`s rarest and most expensive wines was virtually unheard of 30 years ago. It was only when the Moueix family bought a half share in the property in 1962 that its true potential began to be fully realised. Pétrus is now under the direction of Christian Moueix and oenologist, Jean Claude Berrouet. The 11.4 hectare vineyard is located on a plateau on the highest part of Pomerol in the far east of the appellation. The topsoil and the subsoil at Pétrus is almost all clay (in neigbouring properties the soil i ...

1976 Stag's Leap Wine Cellars "SLV" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

Wine & Spirits on this historic vineyard: "Warren Winiarski planted this benchland site in 1970, a parcel adjacent and just to the south of Nathan Fay’s vineyard, which produced the grapes that had initially attracted Winiarski to this place at the rim of the Stag's Leap escarpment. As it turned out, the soils at S.L.V. were different, primarily volcanic. The vineyard is best known for having produced the wine that won the Paris Tasting of 1976 — from vines then three years old... The 35-acre site is planted to Cabernet Sauvignon, today at a range of age ...

1976 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1976 Beaulieu Vineyard "Georges de Latour Private Reserve" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (95RP, 92VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "At present, the 1976 is undoubtedly the greatest B.V. Private Reserve made in the last 30 years. The wine, which has been spectacular from its release, continues to be the richest, most exotic of all the B.V. Private Reserves I have tasted. Did the monumental 1951 resemble this wine at a similar age? The 1976 is full-bodied, with a huge, intoxicating perfume of sweet black and red fruits, earth, Asian spices, roasted herbs, and toasty oak. This massive, full-bodied, super-concentrated, fragrant, alcoholic wine is close to full maturity. It is the quintessential example of the B.V. Private Reserve style - the likes of which has not been made since. It should continue to drink well for another 20 years. (RP)" (06/1995)

1976 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1976 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac. Clive Coates: "There is fruit and opulence here though in a somewhat flabby sort of way. Ripe, spicy but also some astringence on the nose. On the palate, in its burly way, this is one of the better of the 1976s. Good fruit, some richness, no lack of acidity. So still fresh and quite long. Medium body. Tasted October 1990." (Grands Vins: The Finest Châteaux of Bordeaux and Their Wines, pg 71) Notes on the label: "The French painter Pierre Soulages (1919-) discovered Cézanne and Picasso in the late Thirties. After the war he made a decisive move towards abstract work. He immediately caught the public imagination with a new visual language: a mesh of extended strokes of dark colour in conflict with the lyrical violence of a painting style produced by the use of combs: rubber or leather scrapers, knives, spatulas and a huge range of brushes. His canvases almost always use a non-colour, often black, but sometimes brown or cobalt blue

1976 d'Yquem, Sauternes
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1976 d'Yquem, Sauternes (96RP, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted blind in Bordeaux, the 1976 Chateau d'Yquem reaffirms its reputation as one of the great wines of the decade, although I would suggest that that 1971 and 1975 are the true pinnacles. However, in no way do I wish to slight this Sauternes. Deep and slightly burnished in color, it offers dried pineapple, barley sugar, almond and a cheeky puff of café latte. There is wonderful definition here. The palate is underpinned by nigh on perfect acidity with orange rind, mango, crème brûlée and minerals. As it fans out towards the finish, there is a tang of Seville orange marmalade, and though it does not quite possess the persistence of the 1975 Yquem, you will be craving for the next sip. At its peak now, enjoy this great Yquem over the next 20-30 years. (NM)" (06/2016)

The world famous Cabernet Bosché vineyard is located on the Rutherford Bench, west of Grgich Winery, up against the Mayacamas hills. The wines from this vineyard are typically elegant and approachable, and express aromas of cedar, berry fruit and dark cherry. And, boy, do they age!
