1978 Palmer, Margaux

92 points John Gilman: "The 1978 Palmer is aging very gracefully, and the slightly cooler fruit tones of the vintage really shine to advantage in combination with the terroir of Palmer. The nose on the ’78 is excellent, as it offers up a very classy mélange of mulberry, red cherry, tobacco leaf, a touch of petroleum jelly, cigar ash and a lovely base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full and complex, with a very tobaccoey personality (that recalls a state of several bottles of the ’66 tasted a decade ago), a most impressive core of fruit for a 19 ...

1978 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Margaux, Margaux (93RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Chateau Margaux is a significant wine for two reasons: that is was the first under the Mentzelopoulos family after acquiring the property and also, it was their best wine in many years. Today it is still going strong. Clear in color, it has quite a deep garnet core. The nose is very seductive with black fruit, leather, scorched earth, a hint of lavender all beautifully defined and quintessentially Margaux. The medium-bodied palate has exquisite balance, the acidity nicely judged, still a little masculine and 'solid' compared to the subsequent vintages under Paul Pontallier, yet fresh and vital. Sure, there is a grittiness and a touch of rusticity towards the finish, but all in all, this represents a great 1978 Left Bank and a signpost that the First Growth was back on the right track after a dismal run of vintages during the 1970s. Tasted May 2016. (NM)" (10/2016)

1978 Mayacamas Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Mayacamas Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (100VN, 97JG). Vinous: "The 1978 Cabernet Sauvignon is quite simply one of the greatest Napa Valley wines I have ever tasted. Dark, powerful and explosive, the 1978 captivates all the senses with intense dark fruit, tobacco, smoke, cedar and licorice. Utterly mesmerizing from the very first taste, the 1978 shows no signs of fading. The firm tannins ensure another decade-plus of magical drinking. Readers fortunate enough to own well-stored bottles are in for an extraordinary drinking experience on a par with any wine from anywhere in the world. It's as simple as that. The 1978 remains a testament to the genius of Bob Travers and this rugged hillside site on Mt. Veeder. Here, too, provenance is everything. (AG)" (06/2014)

1978 Produttori del Barbaresco "Asili" Riserva (1.5L)
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Produttori del Barbaresco "Asili" Riserva (1.5L). Antonio Galloni writes: "Produttori del Barbaresco is one of the few estates in the world that continues to produce fine, age worthy wines at consumer-friendly prices. Although the Produttori's Barbarescos - the Riservas in particular - age extremely well, until recently the wines haven't been considered collectible. Because of their reasonable prices, most of the wines have long been drunk up by the estate's loyal supporters, making older vintages nearly impossible to source, even in the secondary market."

1978 Caymus "Grace Family Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Caymus "Grace Family Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon. This extremely rare bottle predates all other Grace Family wines. Planted using cuttings from the nearby famed Bosché vineyard, Grace Family Vineyards began as nothing more than a family hobby. In 1978, they brought the fruits of their first harvest over to Caymus Winery in the back of a station wagon. According to Grace Family's website, Charlie Wagner, who ran Caymus, tasted those grapes and exclaimed, "You know, Dick, this is damned fine fruit!" And thus, the Caymus "Grace Family Vineyard" Cabernet Sauvignon was born--Napa's first vineyard-designated wine.
