1978 Latour, Pauillac (Stained label, Lightly Scuffed, Some Slightly Depressed Corks)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Better than I anticipated. A sleek and racy wine. Ruby-amber color. Aromas of cedar, cigar box, tobacco, mint and mushrooms, with hints of red fruits, follow though to a medium body with fine tannins and a long, silky finish. Excellent now, but a little more bottle age would only improve it. Latour vertical. Best after 2005. (JS)" (08/2000) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Medium garnet-colored with moderate amber at the edge, the 1978 Latour offers a spicy, saddle leather, tobacco, dried herb, earthy nose with sweet ...

1978 Lafite-Rothschild, Pauillac (very high to high shoulder, bin soiled labels, nicked capsules)

94 points Wine Spectator: "Beautiful deep-garnet color, with classic Médoc flavors of plum, spice, earth and mineral. Tannic, well-balanced, mouth-filling, chewy in its intensity but needs time. Drinkable now, but probably better to wait until about 1998.--Lafite Rothschild vertical." (11/1991) Jancis Robinson: "Very aromatic and lively and fresh. Quite light. 'Rather an old-fashioned wine, slightly 19th century. The only advantage it had was its acidity. It offers no resistance in any way to being drunk.' Baron Eric de Rothschild. 17/20 points. (JR)" ...

1978 Gruaud-Larose, St-Julien

91 points Wine Spectator: "Garnet rim. A big, rich, ripe, generous yet tannic claret with fragrant tar cedar, ripe cassis and tobacco flavors. Not ready yet, but showing good evolution. Should be a lovely, classic wine in a few years, but can be drunk now." (02/1991)

1978 Matanzas Creek Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1978 Matanzas Creek Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon. Matanzas Creek were among the pioneers of grapegrowing and winemaking in Sonoma County's Bennett Valley, near Santa Rosa. Established in 1977 by Sandra McIver, the winery's early days produced some breathtaking wines that took this quiet area surrounded by mountains and launched it onto the wine scene. The 1978 vintage was the inaugural vintage and the winemaker was none other than the legendary Merry Edwards who stayed in residence until 1984. Another one of those 1970's California wines that makes you pause in wonder.

1978 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1978 Pichon-Lalande, Pauillac (93RP, 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This has a very expressive nose, a touch of greenness but ebullient black fruits, tar, graphite and cedar all with very fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied, quite sweet and silky on the entry with good acidity, notes of black cherries, iodine and an almost sorbet like character towards the finish that shows a surprising amount of glycerine. This is certainly a great success for the vintage, kudos to the late-Michel Delon for fashioning such great wines in modest growing seasons. Drink now-2025. (NM-Wine Journal)" (09/2009)

Bid on this bottle of 1978 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Romanée-St-Vivant Grand Cru (97JS, 95JG, 94VN, 92BH). James Suckling: "Wow. This is almost too intense, with candied fruit and dried lemon rind, and hints of honeyed dark fruits. Spicy too. It’s full-bodied, with round tannins and a full-throttle finish. Still just a baby. Really powerful." (03/2012)

1978 Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Henri Jayer Vosne-Romanée. Allen Meadows - Burghound: "Remarkably, the color is still quite dark with only marginal bricking and the nose took a solid 20 minutes before it really began to open and evolve, leading to rich, complex and quite long flavors of excellent depth and length for a villages level wine. 1978 Bruno Giacosa "Villero di Castiglione Falletto" Barolo Riserva Speciale
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Bruno Giacosa "Villero di Castiglione Falletto" Barolo Riserva Speciale (98VN). Vinous: "Things get back on track quickly with the 1978 Barolo Riserva Speciale Villero, an epic wine that shows all of its pedigree. Firm, classic 1978 tannins support massive fruit, spices, leather and licorice in this icon of Piedmont. Wow! What a showing. (AG)" (02/2012)

Vinous: "Bruno Giacosa’s 1978 Barolo Riserva Collina Rionda is second only to the celestial 1989. Here it is the wine’s structure and depth that impress above all else. 1978 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Léoville-Las-Cases, St-Julien (90RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1978 Las Cases has taken on a garnet hue with some dark ruby tints. The nose is more complex and penetrating than the flavors. The wine offers classic, mineral, lead pencil, smoky, earthy scents, with plenty of ripe fruit, and none of the vegetal herbaceousness that many 1978s have begun to exhibit. The attack offers good ripeness, medium to full body, higher acidity than many more recent vintages, and considerable tannin in the hard finish. Although this wine possesses outstanding complexity, the high tannin level may never fully melt away. (RP)" (10/1995)

1978 Bruno Giacosa "Bussia di Monforte Riserva Speciale" Barolo
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Bruno Giacosa "Bussia di Monforte Riserva Speciale" Barolo (97VN). Vinous: "Medium evolved ruby. This 1978 is nothing short of spectacular in its profoundness. Although the nose shows some evolved notes such as tobacco, there is still plenty of sweet, perfumed fruit, which blossoms on the palate, with incredible persistence, and a lingering note of menthol to round out the exquisite finish. Like the 1978 Monfortino that would follow, the 1978 Bussia appears magically young, although it is a decidedly more delicate and medium-bodied wine. Though fully mature, this shows no signs of fading. Pure magic in a bottle. (AG)" (10/2005)

1978 Bruno Giacosa "Villero di Castiglione Falletto" Barolo
Bid on this bottle of 1978 Bruno Giacosa "Villero di Castiglione Falletto" Barolo (96VN). Vinous: "These three 1978s from Bruno Giacosa were all lovely. None are considered among his very best work by thecognoscenti, so they remain somewhat under the radar, but they are jewels just the same. The 1978 Barolo Villero (white label) was finest of the three wines in this flight. Although not up to the level of the 1978 red label Villero, the white label was a fine poor-man’s substitute, with plenty of vineyard and vintage character, and that inimitable Giacosa perfume.
