1988 Fitte et Laterrade 30 Year Old "Domaine Le Chaou" Bas-Armagnac (750ml)

Fitte et Laterrade is one of a new breed of micro-bottler that's becoming more prominent in this complex region. The incredibly diverse producers of Armagnac across Gascogne have previously not had many options if and when they chose to commercialize their stocks. This small bottler came into existence thanks to a chance meeting between wine professional Vincent Laterrade and the Fitte family of Chateau de Herrebouc. Together they embarked on a journey through Gascogne to find the region's hidden jewels. They build relationships with tiny producers and o ...

1988 Cambus 29 Year Old "Sovereign" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $100)

The shuttererd Cambus distillery had a spectacular history in the development of modern whisky and has had an equally important, albeit shorter and more recent, history in K&L's direct import program. At the dawn of the 20th century not everyone was in agreement that grain whisky produced on a Coffey still could actually be considered whisky. The extraordinary quality of Cambus was a key component in establishing that precedent which is a huge part of today's whisky trade. In fact, for many years, Cambus formed a large portion of Johnnie Walker Blue. Unf ...

1988 North British 30 Year Old "Old Particular" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Single Grain Scotch Whisky (750ml) (Previously $120)

A co-op of sorts, the North British distillery was founded in Edinburgh in 1885 by a group of gentlemen looking to break into the grain whisky business. At the time there was a virtual monopoly on grain production controlled by a company called DCL. North British found great success and has grown its production over the years due to the tremendous quality and quantity of their primarily maize or wheat distillate. The knock on effects of this enormous production are incredibly inexpensive, yet quite well aged stocks of premium grain whisky on the blending ...

1988 d'Yquem, Sauternes (375ml)

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Millionaires will have considerable fun comparing the evolution of the 1988 d'Yquem with the 1986. Both are super-rich, honeyed, botrytised wines. The 1988 exhibits a deeper color, as well as a more evolved, richer, and more complex bouquet. Aromas of melted butter, honeyed fruits, spicy nuts, and toasty new oak explode upward from the glass. The 1988 d'Yquem displays more richness and unctuosity than any young d'Yquem I have tasted. It should have 40-60 years of positive evolution, although one suspects that muc ...

1988 Pavie, St-Emilion

Decanter: "Lots of fruit on the palate, very good acidity and balance. Has a real sheen. (18) " (01/1997) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The backward 1988 Pavie is a structured, tannic wine, balanced nicely by elegant, ripe, tobacco and black cherry-scented fruit, good acidity, and a long, spicy, tannic finish. (RP)" (02/1993) Vinous: "The 1988 Pavie is a vintage I have met a couple of times before, this predating Gérard Perse’s acquisition in 1997. It has an attractive old school nose of light black fruit, roof tiles and cedar; a little diffuse but ...

1988 Rieussec, Sauternes (375ml)

95 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted in Sauternes with Charles Chevalier, the 1988 Rieussec is a vintage that Chevalier himself claimed to be his favorite. I can understand why. It has an unerringly youthful bouquet with vibrant citrus fruit, wild honey, mandarin and mineral scents, a bouquet that seems to have electricity flowing through it. The same can be said for the palate that is full of tension and vigor, almost clinical in terms of focus with alluring viscosity and wonderful length. This bowled me over with its charm and breeding. 1988 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac

93 points James Suckling: "There's licorice here along with mint, some lead pencil and flowers. It's full and round displaying wonderful vanilla and plum flavors. Very silky and refined yet dense and caressing. A beauty, though it does turn a little dry, always revealing its wood." (11/2015) 92 points Wine Spectator: "Very pretty aromas of vanilla, tobacco, berry and chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and a berry, chocolate finish. Not very dense. This pales compared with the other top Pauillacs. I never thought this was a perfect win ...

1988 Soldera (Case Basse) Brunello di Montalcino

97 points Vinous: "Absolutely stunning, the 1988 Brunello di Montalcino is a wine that demands undivided attention. Huge tannins provide the backdrop as this dark, brooding Brunello struts its stuff. The flavors are dark and intense throughout, with tons of energy that gives the wine its focus and sense of direction. It’s hard to move on after the 1988, a wine that captures the essence of Sangiovese from Montalcino in this great vintage." (01/2015) 93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This large-scaled, intensely fragrant Brunello offers up a lavi ...

1988 Krug Brut Champagne (from a private collection, scuffed label)

98 points Wine Spectator: "A superb Champagne and still youthful. Honey, ginger, lemon confit, coffee and mineral aromas and flavors come to mind, all kept focused by a firm, tightly wound structure. The finish is where its pedigree shines through, lingering like warm gingerbread and coffee. (BS)" (10/2003) 97 points Vinous: "The 1988 Krug makes for a fabulous start. Tasted from a perfect bottle, the 1988 remains bright and focused, with all of the energy of this great vintage very much on display. Time has naturally softened some of the contours and a ...

Opulent and beautiful. (JS, Web Only-2009)" 92 points Vinous: "The 1988 Léoville Barton has a lovely nose of brambly black fruit, melted tar, tobacco leaf and undergrowth, very traditional in style but after three decades, remaining fresher and more vibrant than many of its peers. The palate is medium-bodied and possesses more fruit and greater density than the Langoa-Barton. ...

Finishes with loads of ripe fruits, tobacco and cedar. Big and juicy wine. Give it a couple of years still. (JS, Web-2009)" 91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Ex-cellar bottle tasted blind at the Lynch Bages vertical. 1988 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac (high to very high shoulder fills/soiled labels)

92 points Wine Spectator: "Very pretty aromas of vanilla, tobacco, berry and chocolate. Medium- to full-bodied, with soft tannins and a berry, chocolate finish." (2009) According to Robert Parker: "The 1988 Mouton has an attractive aroma of exotic spices, minerals, coffee, black currants, and sweet oak. Much like the 1989, the bouquet is staggering, but the flavors are distinctly less profound. In the mouth, it is a much firmer, tougher, more obviously tannic wine than the 1989, with medium body and outstanding ripeness. A beautifully made 1988 that wil ...

1988 Through The Grapevine "Vallein Tercinier" Single Barrel Cask Strength Fins Bois Cognac (750ml)

Through the Grapevine is bringing us some of the most special Cognac the region has to offer. They've gone to the best producers and scoured their chais for top quality brand that is usually bottled with little or no intervention at all. The unique Fins Bois producer began selling cognac in 1850 and five generations later the family Tercinier continues to produce astonishingly good Cognac. 1988 Poujeaux, Moulis-en-Medoc

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1988 Poujeaux is a beautiful wine, superior, in my opinion, to both the 1989 and 1990. The oaky, classic, curranty bouquet exhibits both intensity and ripeness. The wine offers plenty of toasty new oak, medium body, good acidity, excellent depth and definition, and firm tannins in the finish. " (02/1993) Wine Spectator: "Aromas of coffee and dark berries, with a hint of prune. Medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a tobacco, chocolate and berry aftertaste. Bid on this bottle of 1988 DRC Domaine de la Romanée-Conti Grands Echézeaux Grand Cru (95RP, 93BH, (90-93JG), 92WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I have been telling people for years that this domaine's 'best buy,' if such a label can be applied here, is the Grands Echezeaux. While it is not Romanée-Conti or La Tâche, it often comes very close to those two titans, at a fraction of the price. In 1988, it is fabulous. In fact, my unedited tasting notes had the words 'fabulous' in them twice and 'awesome' once. It is decadently rich and spicy with an extraordinary perfume of violets, gamey, plum-like fruit, toasty new oak, and a finish that must last several minutes. (RP)" (01/1990)

1988 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (97VN). Vinous: "The 1988 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is one of the many highlights in this tasting. Initially quite reticent, the 1988 turns positively explosive with time in the glass. What a pleasure it is to watch the 1988 develop over several hours. By the end of the night, the 1988 is positively electric. Smoke, black fruit and menthol inform the deep, powerful finish. (AG)" (02/2014)

1988 Calera "Mills Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1988 Calera "Mills Vineyard" Mt. Harlan Pinot Noir (94RP). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "My favorite Mills Vineyard offering to date, the 1988 is an amazing tour de force in Pinot Noir winemaking. The color is a deep plum/purple, and the bouquet offers up a spectacular aromatic profile of black fruits, gamy, roasted meats, underbrush, and flowers. Dense, full-bodied, opulently-textured, and remarkably sweet and pure, this extraordinary Pinot Noir will last another decade. It admirably demonstrates what the limestone soils of Calera’s Mt. Harlan vineyard can produce. A brilliant wine still in its adolescence. Wow! (RP)" (12/2002)

1988 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1988 Lafite Rothschild, Pauillac (96DC, 94RP, 94VN, 94WS). Decanter: "This was a vintage that remained tight and closed for a long time. They are just starting to drink this at the chateau apparently, as Salin says it is their dinner wine right now. The salinity is coming through, giving a sappy grip through the mid palate, the effortless racy elegance of an older Cabernet Sauvignon with its truffles, smoked cedar, its grilled black fruits. Colour wise this is very much still intact, just a slight bricking at the edges. A lovely example of how you should never give up on wines from great estates – there will always be a moment when the terroir will out, as we saw on recent tastings of the 1975. The 1988 is certainly having one of those moments, and its long finessed finish should be savoured. 72% Cabernet Sauvignon. (JA)" (12/2016)
