1997 Collosorbo Brunello di Montalcino

91 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep ruby with a garnet core. Opens with appealing smells of sottobosco, tobacco, wet soil and spicy cedar. Redolent of overripe fruit, primarily plum jam, and a heady mix of earthy flavors and fresh road tar. In spite of a pronounced acid bite the abundant tannins are suave, and there is an impression of density and weight. The long finish carries an aftertaste of roasted chestnuts. The acids seem slightly intrusive but the wine intensity and zest are nonetheless quite attractive. (EB)" (07/2002) ...

1997 Martinozzi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva
Bid on this 6-bottle lot of 1997 Martinozzi Brunello di Montalcino Riserva. From a southwest-facing vineyard site neighboring Soldera, Gaja's Villa Santa Restituta, and other such luminaries, this beautifully evolved wine captures the spirit of this great terroir and the longevity of which these wines are capable of showing. "A traditional Brunello Riserva, with a deep red color that's not quite opaque, and ripe, sweet fruit in the nose with bits of orange peel and leather. This wine displays classic linear Sangiovese structure. It is soft and rich on the palate with smooth, sweet tannins in the finish. Martinozzi is in a "murderers row" of quality producers next to Soldera, Gaja and Caprili, just east of Tavernelle in a layer of marine sand and sandy-clay soil. This is a Riserva not to be missed."
