2008 Neely "Hidden Block- Spring Ridge Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The three Pinot Noirs I tasted under the Neely label all had advanced medium garnet colors as well as complex aromatics of pomegranate, apple skins, herbs and earth. My favorite is Neely’s 2008 Pinot Noir Hidden Block Spring Ridge Vineyard, which possesses sweeter fruit, more complexity and a Cote de Beaune-like red fruit character intermixed with spice and earth. Readers should not forget about the Varner Chardonnays I reviewed in issue #190, the 2008 Amphitheater Block, 2008 Home Block and 2008 Bee Block, all a ...

2016 Rhys "Alesia" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "A step up over the Anderson Valley release, the 2016 Pinot Noir Santa Cruz Mountains Alesia gets fruit from five of the six single vineyards (no Skyline fruit) and it offers a sensational bouquet of ripe cherries, currants, rose petals, conifer trees, and sappy flowers. Complex, medium-bodied, elegant, and seamless, it’s a beautiful, beautiful wine that unquestionably plays in the same league as the single vineyards." 2014 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "One of the finest vintages of this cuvée I’ve tasted, the 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate is a thrill a minute with its fabulous bouquet of crème de cassis, charcoal embers, spice, and subtle vanilla oak aromas and flavors. Possessing medium to full body, an incredibly layered, seamless texture, moderate acidity, and present, ripe tannins, it has some upfront charm given its purity of fruit and texture, but deserves 3-4 years of bottle age and is going to keep for two decades. This beauty rivals Ridge’s Monte Bello and is an incred ...

2014 Dorcich Family Vineyards "Monte Bello Road" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

Winery notes: "This highly sought after Monte Bello Cabernet Sauvignon is full bodied and well balanced with rich flavors of cherry, blackberry, tobacco and vanilla. Located at approximately 2,450’ above sea level and just 15 miles from the Pacific Ocean, the Monte Bello vines lie in one of the most unique winegrowing climates in all of California. The coastal influence and unique soil make for a Cabernet Sauvignon grape that requires little manipulation on the winemaking end. The vineyard on Monte Bello Road was planted by our father and brother Stephen ...

2016 Ridge Vineyards "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

94 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate comes from the Santa Cruz Mountain estate, and it follows its big brother Monte Bello's style with a terrific sense of elegance paired with richness. Lots of crème de cassis, crushed violets, vanilla, tobacco leaf, and cedar notes flow to a medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, layered Cabernet Sauvignon that has terrific purity, building tannins, and a great finish. It offers pleasure today yet won't hit prime time for another 5-7 years, and it's going to evolve for 15-20 years (proba ...

2017 Assiduous "Regan Vineyard" Santa Cruz Mountain Pinot Noir

Winemaker's Notes: "The grapes were hand harvested at 22.8° Brix. During the fermentation 25% whole clusters were used and the rest was de-stemmed. Indigenous yeasts and bacteria carried out both primary and secondary fermentations. The wine was aged in 25% New French oak for 18 months. Note that relatively speaking 18 months in barrel is a long ageing time for pinot noir. Regan vineyard is in the cooler area of the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA which lends to a pinot noir with high acidity, extended barrel ageing is needed to calm the wine down and get it ...

2007 Rhys "Family Farm Vineyard" San Mateo County Pinot Noir

90-93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Under the flagship Rhys moniker, the Rhys 2007 Pinot Noir Family Farm Vineyard looks to be a brilliant Pinot Noir from clay/loamy soils and sandstone. This Pinot exhibits intense red cherry and black raspberry fruit intermixed with some damp earth and forest floor notes. The wine is medium to full-bodied, elegant, pure, and just hinting at its ultimate potential. Backward, with an attractive acid profile, and sweet, noble tannin, this wine should hit its peak in about 3 years and last for at least a decade. (R ...

It opens up nicely with time in the glass, has nicely integrated acidity and clean, classy feel that will drink nicely for 4-5 years. (JD)" (10/2016)

2017 Kathryn Kennedy "Small Lot" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

From the producer: "Our knowledge of the Santa Cruz Mountains allowed us to access grapes from superior small vineyards. These growers include residential homeowners whose grapes arrive at the crush pad in very small lots. Warmer growing conditions on the inland side of the coast range have proven to yield superb Cabernet. The San Francisco Chronicle recognized Small Lot as being one of its 'Top 100 Wines.'"

2015 Mount Eden "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

96 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Seeing roughly one-third whole clusters and a mix of new and neutral oak, the 2015 Pinot Noir Estate is another terrific wine from this benchmark estate. Possessing a more structured, backward feel as well as a deep, powerful nose of black currants, charcoal, and scorched earth, this is a serious, age-worthy Pinot Noir that needs 3-4 years of bottle age yet will see its 20th birthday in fine form." It is an impeccable, polished wine from start to finish. This is one of the wines that shows more stem character than some of the others. 2015 Mindego Ridge "Estate" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

94 points Vinous: "The 2015 Pinot Noir is fabulous. The decision to use 50% whole clusters, almost by necessity in 2015, resulted in a Pinot that is both rich in fruit and also aromatically lifted, not to mention also quite a bit more expressive of this site and the Santa Cruz Mountains more broadly. Deep and plush, as the wines from this site can be, but not at all heavy, Mindego Ridge's 2015 Pinot Noir is a total knock out. The saline-infused finish offers a compelling counter to the intense, pliant fruit. The whole clusters are very nicely integrated, ...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2013 Pinot Noir Branciforte Creek Vineyard reveals aromas of plummy fruit, raw cocoa, cedar and rich soil, followed by a medium-bodied, richly tannic palate with a juicy core of fruit and a flavorful but rustic finish. Founded by Ken Burnap in 1975, the current proprietor and winemaker of Santa Cruz Mountain Vineyard is Jeff Emery. This humble estate is run by the husband and wife team of Jim and Judy Schultze, who founded Windy Oaks in 1996. What began as a small, 3-acre venture has now expanded to 30 acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Winery Notes: "Very attractive wine and an exceptional value - a great everyday drinking wine. Medium garnet, aromas of cherry candy, underbrush, incense and fir balsam; fuller-bodied, more mouth-coating and deeper-flavored than previous editions of this wine; also more barrel-inflected; aged 17 months, 20% new French oak, 624 cases."

2014 Rhys "Horseshoe Hillside" Santa Cruz Mountains Pinot Noir

96 points John Gilman: "The 2014 is the second vintage of the 'Horseshoe Hillside' reserve bottling from Rhys Vineyards. The wine is once again a brilliant young pinot noir, offering up again stunning precision and nascent complexity on both the nose and palate. The very promising bouquet wafts from the glass in a blend of black cherries, dark berries, raw cocoa, a bit of gamebird, lovely, discreet spice tones, a fine signature of soil, still a bit of youthful stem tones and a discreet base of spicy oak. Possessing both fruit and structure, it should be accessible for all of its life. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, textural and velvety, with a generous, gourmand personality but plenty of acidity and sapid complexity, concluding with a beautifully delineated, mouthwatering finish. 2001 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2001 Monte Bello is a very atypical vintage for Ridge, attaining a record high alcohol of 14.1% and containing an unprecedented 36% Merlot. Baugher remembers that the grapes retained green, unripe flavors while sugars soared, so he was forced to wait to pick. It's hard not to be seduced by the resulting wine, which wafts from the glass with lavish aromas of ripe plums, black truffles, dark chocolate, cigar ash and loamy soil. 2016 Vöcal "Bates Ranch - Old Vine" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

Winemaker's Notes: "This wine is spicy and rich and displays the chiseled elegance of old vine Cabernet refined in French barrel. Vöcal cares for a five acre parcel of 50yr old vines: dry farmed, own rooted and head trained. The vineyard does not look "conventional" but is nonetheless world class. The effects of the drought were still felt in the 2016 vintage and yields were low and fantastic. Cabernet is legendary in the Santa Cruz Mountains. On the palate, it's full-bodied, immensely deep and very concentrated, with an ample core of dark fruit that almost entirely conceals its rich chassis of tannin. 2016 Madson Wines Santa Cruz Mountains Merlot

Winemaker's Notes: "This Santa Cruz Mountain Red Blend comes from a single vineyard in Los Altos Hills. This vineyard lies at 800 ft elevation overlooking the Santa Clara Valley. Planted in 1981, the vineyard is steep and rustic with Franciscan Complex soils of basalt and schist. Warm days and cool nights help lengthen the ripening time and maintain fresh acidity. Once harvested, the Merlot (75%) was destemmed while the Cabernet Franc (25%) was left as intact, whole clusters. This is to promote bright fruit flavors and varietal complexity. In 2007, Mount Eden purchased this Saratoga property, formerly known as Cinnabar, and renamed it Domaine Eden. The 2014 vintage was very difficult, it was the third year of an extreme drought. 1981 Ridge Vineyards "Monte Bello Jimsomare" Santa Cruz Mountains Cabernet Sauvignon

Paul Draper joined Ridge as winemaker in 1969; in 1971, he moved production to the old Monte Bello winery. During the seventies, Ridge worked with the Schwabacher family to replant the nineteenth-century cabernet vineyards on their land further down the mountain, and in 1978 these young plantings produced the first Jimsomare Cabernet. For the complete Ridge collector.
