1989 Couly Dutheil "Baronnie Madeleine" Chinon

Maison Couly-Dutheil is undeniably one of the finest estates of the red wine-focused, central Loire region of Chinon, with eighty acres of prime Chinon vineyards as well as seven hectares of Saumur and Saumur Champigny. The estate's Chinon holdings are impressive indeed as they spread over three distinct Chinon terroirs: Sand and gravel along the Vienne River which produce light and fruit-driven wines, siliceous slopes and plateaus which impart a certain finesse and elegance to Chinon; and finally clay and limestone slopes which produce Chinon's most ser ...

1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Bin Soiled Labels)

97 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The 1989 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape is an awesome wine with the usual Beaucastel meat, earth and game notes backed up by ripe, clean dark fruit aromas. The palate is stunning and shows considerable structure and a precise, almost angular character. Much more structured and precise in the mouth than the 1990, this has a long, beautiful finish." (04/2008) 97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 is inkier/purple in color than the 1990, with an extraordinarily sweet, rich personality offering up notes of sm ...

1989 Latour, Pauillac

94 points Wine Spectator: "This is so decadent and exciting on the nose, with very ripe fruit, tobacco, meat and cedar. Full-bodied, offering amazing raspberry fruit in the core of the palate. Ultrapolished, velvety tannins wonderfully coat every inch of your palate. This will age for years ahead, but it's so lovely now. Much better than many people think. (JS, Web Only-2010)" 92 points Vinous: "The 1989 Latour conveys the warmth of the growing season with scents of warm gravel and wild herbs infusing the soft, perhaps slightly muffled black fruit. 1989 Le Gay, Pomerol

95 points Wine Spectator: "Tannic monster. Full-bodied, with masses of superripe fruit and mouthpuckering tannins. Port lovers like me love this stuff. Age it for decades to come.(JS)" (05/1999) 94 points James Suckling: "Phenomenal with incredible mushroom, wet earth, dried spice, mineral, and dark fruits. Full-bodied with dusty tannins that followed through to licorice, dark fruits, and black olives. It's everything I hoped for and more." 1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 has taken forever to shed its formidable tannins, but what a great vintage of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of the pyramid although the 1990, 2000, and down the road, some of the more recent vintages such as 2005, 2009 and 2010 should come close to matching the 1989's extraordinary concentration and undeniable aging potential. 1989 Couly Dutheil "Clos de l'Olive" Chinon

Direct from the Estate!!! Made from 100-year-old cabernet franc vines, growing on unique limestone and clay soil, this wine is dense and extremely complex. A magnificent example of a fine Loire red from what is arguably Chinon's greatest producer. Great aging potential, too. Full bodied and concentrated, a great vintage for Clos de L'Olive with abundant fruit, sweet rich mouthfeel and ripe juicy tannins. Very impressive wine for drinking now till 2010+. These wines evolve into the pinnacle of elegance, with haunting aromas of rich plummy fruit, sweet her ...

1989 Latour, Pauillac (lightly bin-soiled labels)

94 points John Gilman: "The 1989 Latour was really quite overlooked at the time of its release, with much of the wine world’s focus absorbed by the 1990 vintage from this great property. However, at the Hart-Davis-Hart tasting, the 1989 Latour was the marginally superior wine of these two vintages, and also decidedly the younger of the two. The deep, youthful and very pure nose offers up a fine blend of cassis, dark berry, a touch of mint, cigar ash, gravelly soil tones, fresh herbs and cedar. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and rock solid at ...

1989 Latour à Pomerol, Pomerol (Lightly Stained/ Stained labels)

92 points John Gilman: "The 1989 vintage of Latour à Pomerol is very good, but I left our vertical wondering if there might be even more precise bottles of this wine out there than the one we enjoyed at our tasting. The wine is notably more precise and pure on both the nose and palate than the 1990 paired up with it, but it could not quite match the mid-palate stuffing of the ’90. The bouquet is a fine and still fairly youthful blend of black cherries, black plums, dark soil tones, bitter chocolate, a bit of tariness, cigar ash and gentle Pomerol herb to ...

92 points Robert Parker: "Both the 1989 and 1990 vintages performed up to the quality I expected. The 1989 may be even better than I noted in my early reviews, although I have always rated it as one of the top wines of the vintage, and a notable "sleeper." The 1989 can be drunk now, but it will be even better after another 1-3 years of cellaring. It exhibits an opaque purple color, a sweet, black-raspberry, mineral, and toasty oak-scented nose, dense, medium to full-bodied flavors that possess terrific purity and harmony, and a spicy, long, sweet, tannic ...

1989 Talbot, St-Julien

Jancis Robinson: "Bright bricky garnet. More evidently leafy than the Langoa, and that makes it smell younger, still of blackcurrant leaves and capsicum, even lavender, though there is a light meatiness. Not as long as the Langoa but richer than I expected from the nose. There's still a slight grip in the tannins and I wonder if there always will be. The tannnis may well outlast the fruit. After an hour, more liquorice on the nose and perhaps just a little dry on the palate but not dried out. 17/20 (JH)" (07/2010) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dark r ...

The nose offers sweet plums and creme de cassis intermixed with vanilla and graphite. The wine is lush, medium to full-bodied, and layered with texture, low acidity, sweet tannin, and the hallmark purity and elegance this estate routinely produces. The nose is still tightly knit, attesting an Unico that will require 20-30 years in bottle to reach its plateau. Touches of star anis, peppermint, boysenberry and blackberry vie for attention and soar from the glass. In that sense, it might actually outlast the 1990, but what a pair these two wines make. 1989 Beau-Sejour Becot, St. Emilion (Previously $250)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted side by side with the 1990, it is interesting how much more tannic the 1989 seems to be. Colored a dark plum with some lightening at the edge, the nose shows notes of compost, melted licorice, oak, and black cherry fruit. The overt oakiness noticeable in its youth has become far more subtle and less aggressive. In the mouth the wine starts off large-scaled, fleshy, and fat, but then some relatively astringent tannins kick in in the finish. Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1989 Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc (90RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Once again this estate revealed its excellent quality/price ratio. As one taster so appropriately stated after learning the identity of both the 1989 and 1990 Sociando-Mallets, "I'd rather have the '89 or '90 Sociando-Mallet than the '89 Margaux or '90 Mouton in my cellar." Both wines showed surprisingly well, performing at second or third-growth levels. The 1989 reveals a youthful, unevolved purple color, followed by a sweet nose of black fruits, minerals, and vanillin. The wine is extremely young (much more so than most 1989s), with medium to full body, good tannin, and not nearly as much of the vintage's soft, evolved personality in evidence. (RP)" (02/1997)

The Cos d’Estournel 1989 has a dense, broody bouquet with typical Saint Estephe earthiness complemented by hints of seaweed and a touch of ox blood. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but rounded tannins, very good weight and concentration here, fine acidity and harmony with a nice build so that its finishes with a peacocks tails of mulberry, cedar and leather. The charcoal note makes an encore, with a lovely twinge of old-school character holding the finish.
