2000 Joël Taluau Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil Vieilles Vignes

Joël Taluau is a fabulous grower in St. Nicolas de Bourgueil known for making some of the purest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire, unmarred by the intrusion of oak--which he hasn't used in production since 1986. He was also the first producer in the appellation to begin domaine bottling. The Vieilles Vignes, from a single plot of Cabernet Franc planted in 1934, is prized for its power, depth and grace. This flagship wine is meant to age, and the large format bottle will have helped to preserve freshness.

2000 Labégorce, Margaux

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "If Margaux is the most delicate of the Médoc wines, then this is the epitome of Margaux. It is light, poised and attractively perfumed. The fruit is elegant and fresh with a fine streak of acidity. " (06/2003) Vinous: "Red-ruby. Sappy, fruit-driven aromas of cherry and raspberry. Sweet, supple and rather easygoing; suggests gentle extraction. Offers good intensity and should give early pleasure. Finishes with smooth tannins and very good length. 2000 Araujo "Eisele Vineyard" Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (1.5L)

92 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Good medium red-ruby. Sappy black raspberry, redcurrant, flowers, tobacco and licorice on the nose, along with sexy, smoky oak notes of torrefaction. Dense and lush, with a restrained sweetness and hints of minerals and chocolate. Not a huge wine but boasts lovely intensity and vinosity. The first vintage of this wine to include some Merlot - no doubt at least partly due to the influence of consulting enologist Michel Rolland. 2000 Henry's Drive Cabernet Sauvignon Padthaway South Australia

As Mr. Parker says, "... readers looking for for a sexy succulent Cabernet fruit bomb will enjoy the 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon. Made from young vines, this gorgeous deliciously fruity effort reveals plenty of glycerin, body, and depth without a hard edge to be found. It represents pure hedonistic cassis fruit presented in a voluptuous, uncomplex, pure style" . 90pts 10/30/02

2000 Domaine de la Janasse Chateauneuf-du-Pape Vieilles Vignes

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is even better, with another layer of texture and depth. Chocolate-laced fruits, cured meats, spice, crushed rock and sweet spice all show from this perfumed, up-front, sweetly fruited Chateauneuf, and it still has a core of concentrated fruit and solid tannin structure. I see no reason to hold off, but it too will thrill over the coming 3-5 years. One of the benchmark estates in the Rhone Valley, Domaine de la Janasse is run by the talented brother/sister pair of Chri ...

2000 Castello Banfi Brunello di Montalcino

90 points Wine Enthusiast: "At 50,000 cases plus, this is as mass-market a wine as Brunello goes. But it’s a darn good one, with tobacco, citrus and herbs on the nose. Runs a bit simple and grapy on the palate, but it’s overwhelmingly ripe, healthy and full-force. Nothing tricky here, just clean cherry, plum and chocolate flavors sitting comfortably on a medium-to-full frame. (MS)" (07/2005) Vinous: "The 2000 Brunello di Montalcino is decidedly modern in style, with its super-dark color and prominent aromas of sweet toasted oak. On the palate it shows ...

2000 Mouton-Rothschild, Pauillac

97 points Wine Enthusiast: "With its distinctive antique bottle and gold etched label dominated by a sheep, this is definitely a move away from classic Bordeaux bottling. It is good that the wine can support the presentation. The fruit is so ripe, it almost tastes of raisins, but that sweetness is finely balanced by the dry tannins and concentrated texture. To finish, there are exotic spices, giving an almost oriental character to the long aftertaste. (RV)" (06/2003) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Perhaps the most beautiful packaging ever on ...

93 points Wine Spectator: "Beautifully crafted, rich, vibrant and deftly balanced. Wonderful currant, blackberry, anise, sage, mineral and fresh earth offer layers of complexity and concentration. Finishes with just the right amount of tannins to give it a solid backbone. *Collectibles* (JL)" (10/2003) 89-91 points Vinous: "Saturated ruby. Pungent aromas of black cherry, coffee, bitter chocolate and violet. Dense, sweet and deep; this has broad, palate-coating fruit with the strength to support the big, cheek-coating tannins. 2000 Latour, Pauillac (1.5L)

100 points James Suckling: "Latour has made truly great wines in the past two decades—and this is one of the best. It has fabulous aromas of black truffles, currants, raspberry and dried flowers. Mind-blowing on the palate, it’s an emotional and soulful red." (04/2014) 99 points Vinous: "The 2000 Latour is a wine that I feel is overlooked by many cognoscenti, goggle-eyed by the 2005 or 2009. 2000 Bruno Giacosa "Le Rocche del Falletto" Barolo Riserva

100 points James Suckling: "What a crowd-pleaser at the lunch. The French journalists were amazed by this Barolo, and kept saying how it was very Burgundian. It’s certainly a crazy wine with aromas of dried fruits, flowers, nuts and tea. Then it changes in the glass to spices and berries. Phenomenal. Goes on for minutes." (10/2003) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Cabernet Sauvignon (450 cases) exhibits a dense ruby/purple color as well as a sweet nose of charcoal, blackberry, cassis, mineral, and Asian spice characteristics. The impression is of a lovely Pinot that combines delicacy and elegance with power. Drink now and over the next four years. " (02/2005) K&L Notes: While this elegant Pinot Noir is fashioned to resemble its Burgundian forbears, there is an intensity of fruit that makes its Californian roots well known. 93 points Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar: "Deep red-ruby. Wilder, more animal aromas of black fruits, dark cherry, smoke, leather, licorice and game. Wonderfully sweet and stuffed with material; distinctly softer and fatter than the H Block bottling. Complex flavors of currant, plum, leather, licorice and minerals. Perhaps even longer on the finish than the H Block though not as fine, finishing with substantial dusty tannins. 'A wilder, crazier, growling kind of a wine,' admits winemaker John Kongsgaard. The outstanding 2000 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Etienne Gonnet has a dense ruby/purple color as well as aromas of sweet vanilla, lavender, roasted herbs, pepper, cherry, plum, and cassis fruit. 2000 Jericho Canyon Vineyards "Don Vincenzo" Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend

From winery proprietors Marla and Dale Bleecher: "We knew the spot the moment we saw it. After three years of searching, we came upon a beautiful cattle ranch at the northeast end of Napa Valley outside of Calistoga. With Mt. St. Helena and the Palisades ringing the canyon, the site was breathtaking. Evidence of a pre-prohibition vineyard confirmed our belief that this was the place to develop an exceptional vineyard. Following the contours of the land, we planted Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. The vineyard sweeps across the hills on t ...

99 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2000 Haut-Brion (a blend of 51% Merlot, 43% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc) showed incredibly at the tasting, and for me is one of the three or four most prodigious wines of the vintage. A compelling nose of roasted herbs, scorched earth, sweet blueberries, plums, black currants, and a hint of graphite is followed by a deep, layered, sumptuously textured, full-bodied Haut-Brion, but one with extraordinary complexity. I tasted this wine four times from bottle, and it has blown away some tough competition. A wealth of fruit, power, and balance, amazing purity, and a sumptuous, 65-second finish are the stuff of legends. As usual, it is a blend of 45% Grenache, 40% Mourvedre, and the rest Syrah as well as miscellaneous varietals.
