2017 Domaine de Verquière Côtes-du-Rhône

The Verquière estate has been passed down from father to son for many generations and is now managed by brothers Romain and Thibaut Chamfort. Following age-old traditions and sustainable practices, the estate was recently certified organic. The Côtes-du-Rhône is a blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah, grown on chalky clay soils with loads of large pebbles in the vineyards. Verquière recently returned to us after a long hiatus and we are pleased to have them back.

91-93 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Cassis, blackberries, violets, and an undeniable minerality all emerge from the 2017 Ventoux Domaine, which is seamless and incredibly well balanced on the palate. Pure, layered, and fabulously textured, I suspect it will be a smoking value on release." (08/2018) 90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted from tank, the 2017 Ventoux Rouge is a promising blend of 50% Grenache, 30% Syrah and 20% Mourvèdre, with the Mourvèdre the only component that aged in barrel. Just outside the city of Montpellier lie the vineyards of La Croix Belle, a family owned and operated Domaine that traces it roots in the region through more than two centuries. Francoise and Jacques Boyer assumed control of the property in the late 1970s with an eye towards making clean expressive wines that reflect the region. A lot of replanting was done, yields were lowered and modern winemaking techniques and facilities were adopted. This eye for detail had delivered us some of the freshest and most compelling values of the season. The Caringole ...

He was left a farm and vineyard of only 2 hectares from his father, converting the old farm buildings into a winery. We were first introduced to the wines of Eric Cottat a few years back. From the domaine: "Our domaine is the work of four successive generations at Cléré Sur Layon. Whilst understanding how to evolve and keep up to date, the estate has grown from 5 to 80 hectares over 50 years. We strive to utilize the diversity of the soils and vines in the vineyard, ensuring the handing down of the estate to each generation."
