2013 Leeuwin "Art Series" Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Western Australia (Elsewhere $55)

97 points Bob Campbell: "Deep red/purple: an outstanding color in depth and hue. The bouquet is clean, fresh and alive, with bright black fruit and violet aromas, touches of cedar and toasty oak, the palate very deep and concentrated, with lush fruit and abundant tannins, which counter-balance the fruit and sweetness. A powerful yet elegant Cabernet with a very long and distinguished future ahead of it. An outstanding, profound wine. (HH, Real Review)" (06/2017) 96 points James Halliday: "The unadorned purity of this cabernet follows precisely in the f ...

2015 d'Arenberg "The Dead Arm" Shiraz McLaren Vale South Australia (Elsewhere $64)

96 points James Halliday: "This is a particularly good Dead Arm, its alcohol miraculously the same as the '14, but however that may be, it has an elegance to its mouthfeel and lingering finish." (08/2018) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Black cherries and black olives mark the nose of the 2015 The Dead Arm Shiraz, d'Arenberg's flagship bottling. It's a blend of older and younger vines from different sites, depending on what the fruit has to offer. Full-bodied, concentrated and firmly structured, it's nevertheless velvety on the long finish, p ...

Top Pick!
2014 Leeuwin "Art Series" Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Western Australia (Elsewhere $65)

96 points Bob Campbell: "Very deep red/purple colour. The bouquet is all about concentrated, perfectly-ripened cabernet fruit embellished with stylish oak. Cedar and berries. The wine is very intense and cast in an elegant but full-bodied style, with red berry fruit in abundance on the palate. The tannins are emphatic but fine and restrained, beautifully tailored. A lovely wine indeed - to cellar or enjoy now. (Huon Hooke - The Real Review)" (05/2018) 93 points James Halliday: "Reticent. Firmly structured. Southern Margaret River across its verdant vei ...

2016 John Duval "Entity" Shiraz Barossa Valley South Australia (Elsewhere $40)

97 points James Halliday: "60% Barossa Valley, 40% Eden Valley grapes, open-fermented with submerged cap, matured for 15 months in new (33%) and used French hogsheads. Deeply colored; this is at once full-bodied and elegant, not a common marriage with young red wines with decades in front of them. The flavors are all black: blackberry, blackcurrant, black cherry, earth and licorice. The old vines have also provided ripe tannins, the whole theme resonated with oak a la Grange." (12/2018) 94 points James Suckling: "A ripe nose with the classic blackberry ...

2014 John Duval "Plexus" GSM Barossa Valley South Australia (Elsewhere $44)

94 points James Halliday: "A 47/32/21% blend drawn from old vineyards in a number of districts, Krondorf the one constant, fermented with submerged cap (header boards), matured in French hogsheads (10% new). As is appropriate, complex, but largely fruit-driven, with red cherries/berries and plums to the fore, oak and (particularly) tannins taking a back seat." (10/2016) 93 points Vinous: ""(aged for 14 months in 90 percent used and 10 percent new large French oak barrels) Vivid ruby-red. Expansive aromas of ripe red berries, candied flowers and spiceca ...

2014 Xanadu Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Western Australia

96 points James Halliday: "91% cabernet sauvignon, 5% malbec, 4% petit verdot, crushed and destemmed, static and open fermenters, 33% undergoing post-ferment maceration for 4 weeks, matured for 14 months in French oak (40% new) before blending. One of six '14 Xanadu cabernets, you really need to keep your wits about you. Great colour is no surprise, nor is the majesty of the cassis-filled bouquet and palate. While there is an element of barrel selection (and trickle down of lesser barrels, and possible promotion) each wine does have its own personality, ...

2016 Hentley Farm Shiraz Barossa Valley (Previously $25)

95 points James Halliday: "There's no magic in this wine other than the very high quality of the grapes (and the low price). The colour is typical Hentley Farm, deep, but with a vivid crimson-purple rim; the expressive black fruits bouquet and the medium to full-bodied, richly textured palate following the same path. The blackberry essence flavours are intense and luscious, bright and fresh." (08/2017) 92 points James Suckling: "Aromas of blackberries, blueberries and hints of licorice follow through to a full body, with very fine tannins and a soft fi ...

2016 Penfolds "Bin 707" Cabernet Sauvignon South Australia (Previously $450)

98 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The flagship Cabernet Sauvignon is the 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon Bin 707 and it comes mostly from the Coonawarra and McLaren Vale regions. Brought up all in new American oak, this brilliant effort is another tour de force from this producer that has massive notes of crème de cassis, lead pencil, vanilla bean, white chocolate, and hints of mint all soaring from the glass. Inky colored, full-bodied, and with a flamboyant, opulent mouthfeel, it opens up beautifully with time in the glass and didn’t show a hint of oxidation or tiredness ...

2016 Penfolds "Bin 389" Cabernet-Shiraz South Australia (Previously $70)

96 points James Halliday: "A 51/49% blend from the Barossa Valley, Coonawarra, McLaren Vale, Padthaway and Wrattonbully, matured for 12 months in American hogsheads (37% new). Good colour, although not as striking as some of the other wines in the range; Likewise retains some elegance despite the clarion call of the cascade of fruit flavours. The fruit, oak, tannin and acid balance is impeccable, as is the length and drive of the palate. The savoury subtext is equally good." (10/2018) 96 points James Suckling: "The personality of this warmer-vintage Bi ...

2016 Walsh & Sons "Roi" Cabernet Sauvignon Margaret River Western Australia (Previously $35)

94 points James Halliday: "From the Osmington district, 20% hand-picked whole bunches into a concrete vat with 80% machine-harvested 2 days later and tipped on top (no crushing or destemming), pressed to French oak (80% new) for 12 months maturation. A very powerful, sombre black-fruited wine with savoury herbal notes and pushy tannins on a long palate." (08/2018) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The unusual 2016 Roi Cabernet Sauvignon fermented in concrete, with 20% whole bunches. It's medium-bodied and silky on the palate but a bit confected ...

2016 Walsh & Sons "Felix" Syrah Margaret River (Previously $30)

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Small batch winemakers Ryan Walsh and Freya Hohnen deliver the goods once again with this full-bodied, earthy and adorably labelled wine. It's meaty and floral in nature, with tones of soy sauce and white pepper weaving between raspberry and blueberry fruit. The tannins are sandy in texture, adding grip to the round, juicy fruit. Like Walsh's other offerings, it manages excellent drinkability amidst power and refinement. " (04/2019) 90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "On the earthy/meaty side of the Syrah spectrum, th ...

2017 Helen & Joey Estate 'Inara' Cabernet Sauvignon, Yarra Valley (Previously $18)

91 points James Suckling: "A fresh cabernet with plenty of herbs and spices to add to the background of blueberries and crushed violets. Medium body, very fresh acidity, steely tannins and a blue-fruited finish. Drink in 2020. Screw cap." (08/2018) James Halliday: "A well balanced, light to medium-bodied cabernet that has good varietal character. It is ready to drink now, the tannins soft and the oak not assertive." (08/2018)
