Baron-Fuenté "Grande Réserve" Brut Champagne
Top Pick!
90 points John Gilman: "Baron-Fuenté’s non-vintage Brut bottling is composed of a blend of sixty percent Pinot Meunier, thirty percent chardonnay and ten percent Pinot Noir, with all the vins clairs all fermented in stainless steel. It is a full malo wine and is aged three years sur latte, being finished with a dosage of nine grams per liter. I am not sure if this is the same release I reported on last year or a new cuvée, but the wine is showing very well. The bouquet offers up a fine constellation of white peach, apple, lovely Meunier floral tones, a t...

2017 Antech "Cuvée Eugenie" Cremant de Limoux
Top Pick!
From the importer: "Limoux is the world's original birthplace of sparkling wine, with the first bubbles produced here in the year 1544, some 150 years before Dom Perignon began making sparkling wine in Champagne. Only 24 wineries exist in Limoux and Antech (pronounced "An-tesh") is by far the region's most celebrated producer, known for the purity and elegance of the sparkling wines they produce. The estate was originally planted to 150 acres six generations ago, and 24 acres have been added over the years. In addition to their estate grapes, for the la...

91 points Decanter: "Richly aromatic with apple and lemon curd notes. A soft, well-integrated mousse is complemented by notes of lemon sherbet Blind tasted by Fabio GiavedoniAndy Howard MWAlessandra Piubello(at The Institute of Masters of Wine, 29 Nov 2018) " (11/2018) K&L Notes: San Venanzio has won many awards over the years. At K&L they get the coveted "Guido" award of two thumbs up and three stars for value. On the nose, there are generous notes of apples, peaches, tropical fruits and pear blossom. It’s wonderfully balanced and elegant, with a plea...

Outstanding sparkling wine from the Languedoc? Absolutely and resoundingly, YES! There will be those of you who scoff at the price of this wine, and claim that a sparkling wine set so low will never be worth any serious consideration. Well, those of you would be WRONG. One of the rising stars of the Languedoc, Jean Louis Denois makes exciting, world-class wines that nonetheless remain amazingly inexpensive, owing to his location more than anything else. His vineyards sit in the very southwestern corner of France, at the foot of the Pyrenees, and he produ...

La Petite Marquise Crémant de Loire Brut
Top Pick!
Wine Enthusiast: "This wine is soft, lightly nutty and lit up by bright acidity. Apples and creamed pears have a tangy, mineral edge. (RV)" (05/2018) K&L Notes: A pale yellow wine with tiny bubbles, this Crémant de Loire Brut is rounded and delicate with a fine, nervy, complex nose and the freshness of Chenin Blanc, floral Chardonnay and fruity Cabernet Franc from 20- to 30-year-old vines. With its lively attack, it proceeds gracefully across the palate with nice aromatic persistence in the mouth and lingering notes of fresh peaches and pear. A great o...

Wine Enthusiast: "This pale rosé sparkling wine is brightly crisp. With its attractive red currants and berryies cut with intense acidity, this young, tense and fruity wine is ready to drink. (RV)" (05/2018) K&L Notes: A wine with tiny, long-lasting bubbles, Deligeroy's Crémant de Loire Rosé is a lovely gleaming pink color with a delicate, nervy nose and aromas of fresh red fruit. It's lively on the attack and has enticing aromatic intensity and brightness. Well balanced in the mouth, this sparkler is enhanced by a fresh but subtle finish. The wine is ...

Jean-Louis Denois "Tradition" Extra Brut Reserve
Top Pick!
Jancis Robinson: "From Limoux, but without Chenin Blanc in the blend it can't be called Crémant de Limoux. Full bodied, showing some lovely development with a neat bead. Mouthfilling citrus tang, and very satisfying. Would put many Champagnes to shame, quite frankly. *Very Good Value* (TC)" (07/2014) K&L Notes: Outstanding sparkling wine from the Languedoc? Absolutely and resoundingly, yes! There may be those who would scoff at the price of this wine, and claim that a sparkling wine set so low could never be worth any serious consideration. Well, we're...

Wine Enthusiast: "Honeysuckle, honeydew melon and white-peach aromas follow through to the somewhat sweet palate along with a note of glazed orange zest. Fresh acidity lifts the rich candied flavors. (KO)" (12/2017) K&L Notes: The Bronca sisters grow their own fruit on steep hillside vineyards, then make base wine and perform the secondary (sparkling) fermentation on non-vintage batches three or four times a year to ensure freshness. Low yields and hillside-grown fruit ensure that the wine has good concentration and acidity. This one's a clean, crisp a...

The Antech "Emotion" is a little something different: a blend of Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Mauzac and Pinot Noir from the AOC Crémant de Limoux in the Languedoc region of southern France. Since the 2012 vintage it has been a huge hit with our staff; now it is back, to make our evenings and dinner parties sparkle just that much more. Pale pink hue, fine bead, delicate hints of cherry and strawberry with white floral notes. A crisp, elegant sparkler made in the traditional method, spending 15 months in the bottle before disgorgement. At way less than the p...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Denois’s non-vintage Chardonnay Brut Blanc de Blancs. Legally, this “traditional method” wine is merely a vin mousseux, yet it is in fact a tribute to the terroir of Limoux (whose sparkling wine appellation must be based on the local Blanquette de Limoux a.k.a. Mauzac grape, for which Denois evidently has little respect). It will be hard to find a more delicious and interesting sparkling wine for the price. Ripe apricot, grapefruit, blueberries, and lily in the nose lead to an intensely pit-fruited palate that – despite a ...

At this beautiful little organic domaine in Vouvray, all the wines are made from 100% Chenin Blanc but vary in degrees of sweetness depending on where the grapes are harvested from. Planted in the sandy clay soils over tuffeau (that magical chalky soil of the Loire), these wines show the range of the quality that can be found in Vouvray for a mere pittance.

2018 Silvano Follador Prosecco Superiore Brut Nature
Top Pick!
Ian D'Agata writes: "Silvano Follador is in my opinion the single best producer of Prosecco today, though his recent decision to stop making Cartizze so as to focus on just one wine that would best express the denominazione’s potential and terroir is one that pains me immensely. That said, Follador is a true master of the Glera grape variety and the 20,000 bottles of wine he makes a year (he owns 3.5 hectares - 8.6 acres), made in a relatively drier style than most of his colleagues, are much sought after by wine lovers and collectors." 95 points Decanter: "The fragrant bouquet of creamy Christmas cake leads into a multifaceted palate of black fruit, prune, spice and cassis with affably dry, chalky notes. Bursting with quality. " K&L Notes: Platinum - Best in Show: Best Value Red Rhône Varietals - Decanter World of Wine Awards, 2017

92 points Wine & Spirits: "A selection of Riesling named for the estate’s founder, this grows on clay-limestone soils, mostly around the village of Eguisheim. It’s a rich wine with enough limestone abrasion to the acidity that it feels clean and fresh, the generously concentrated flavors of lemon and golden apple edged with bitter notes of quinine, dandelion greens and lemon zest. Tingling with energy." (04/2018) 92 points Wine Enthusiast: "Delightful peachy notes define the fruity friendly nose. The palate adds zesty lemon to this rich fruit to create...

Our favorite Champagne for mixology, this Champagne has the integrated cane sugar that makes cocktails sing, as well as the texture and breed that only 3 years of ageing on the lees and real Champagne terroir can bring! (Gary Westby, K&L Champagne buyer)

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The sparkling Clàssic Penedès 2015 Refugi, a brut nature that is completely dry, is the first wine they produced after five generations growing grapes in a haven (refugi in Catalan) in the middle of their vineyards. It's mostly Xarello with 10% Chardonnay, part fermented in new 500-liter French oak barrels and then refermented in bottle, where it was kept with the lees for a minimum of 20 months. It has a nice balance between fruit and more developed aromas and flavors of spice and yeast, and it has a balanced, t...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "There is a hint of wet chalk stone on the nose, along with crisp apple and a touch of lemon. The palate then amplifies both the chalky impression and the creamy mellow richness of the apple and the autolysis. This is restrained but very classic, understated but deeply satisfying with its creamy mousse, a hint of stone and the fruit-accentuated backdrop. The mousse is fine and the finish is wonderfully dry. (AK)" (11/2018) 90 points Vinous: "Pale straw with a persistent mousse. White stone fruit and fresh citrus on the delica...

90 points Decanter: "The Louis Bouillot ‘Perle’ series is exceptionally well-crafted for its price and all of the wines are recommendable. I’ve picked out the Rosé Perle d’Aurore, though, as rosé is something of a Bouillot speciality (over a million bottles are produced every year) and it’s a wine which isn’t shy about its burgundian identity. 'We want,' says Marcel Combes, 'vinosity above all, almost a touch of tannin, with what you could almost call a compote style of fruit.' Autumn red fruits are there on the nose, but in a soft and understated sty...

Jancis Robinson: "A pretty, pale pink. Lacy, persistent bubbles. Clean, fresh and absolutely packed with ripe summer strawberries. Not remotely complex but there is so much delicious fruit in there that who cares?! (TC) " (03/2017) Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Based on Pinot Noir the NV Crémant d'Alsace Rosé Brut has a very pale color with just a hint of rosé. Very delicate fruit aroma with hints of red berries and flowers on the very subtle, fresh and elegant nose lead to a full-flavored and quite expressive palate. The wine is quite powerful and ...

" (09/2018) Wine & Spirits: "Tight bubbles surge through a tide of lemon and saline flavors, creating a fine texture that’s balanced by mouthwatering acidity. Refreshing and ready for Wellfleet oysters." A blend of red Baga and white Bical grapes, this is a fantastic, very low dosage (this is DRY!) rosé sparkler. Filipa Pato learned from Mr. Bairrada himself, her father Luis Pato, and currently makes her own wines in a winery they both share. Famous for its highly calcareous clay soil, Bairrada makes red wines that bring to mind Barolo, whites which are similarly fine and age-worthy, as well as some of the very best Champagne method sparkling wines on the Iberian peninusla.

Wine Enthusiast: "The color of Versilia Peach roses, this sparkler offers quiet aromas of strawberry, plum and saltine cracker. The palate is delicate, showing strawberry, apple, biscuits and lemon juice flavors on a soft, fine mousse. It finishes on a squeeze of lemon and baguette, with a hint of watermelon. (FA)" (12/2018) Wine Spectator: "Zesty and fruit-forward, with appealing raspberry and spiced apple flavors. Produced from nearly 100% estate, biodynamically grown Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel-lo, this is one of the classiest, best-made Spanish sparkling wines on the market. From their variety of calcareous clay soils, to the careful harvesting and proximity of their gravity-flow winery, both the quality of raw material and oenological know-how are abundant at this terrific estate. There is a very tiny dosage, less than 6g/l, and the overall impression here is of a very mineral, clearly delineated, chiseled sparkling wine that is truly first-rate. When you tast...

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The pink-colored Crémant d'Alsace Brut Rosé is 100% Pinot Noir sourced from different terroirs between Guebwiller in the South and Molsheim further north. Aged on the lees for 18 months before the disgorgement (13 grams per liter), this is a fruit-driven and charmingly sweetish, yet pretty fine sparkling wine with sweet cherry and red berry flavors. It has good freshness and a delicate tannin grip. The finish is clear, dry and even stimulating. (SR)" (02/2017) Wine Enthusiast: "Subtle strawberry and red-apple notes creat...

Spontaneous fermentation - an altogether preferable scenario to spontaneous combustion, and A LOT more fun to drink. This pink, semi-dry bubbly was made by spontaneous fermentation, otherwise known as méthode ancestrale. Grapes are picked by hand (the local Poulsard and Gamay grown on mountainous slopes in the shadow of the Alps) and fermented in chilled vats just reaching 5 or 6 degrees alcohol. The young and light wine is then bottled, along with its active yeast and considerable unfermented sugar. Under pressure of the cork, the wine continues to ferm...

From the producer: "The Pétillant Naturel is Onward’s sparking expression of Malvasia Bianca from Capp Inn Ranch. The wine was moved from tank to bottle by gravity. Everything to do with bottling lady Pét-Nat has to be done by hand because she is still fermenting (meaning full of CO2 gas) and needs to be handled with care. I bottled the wine with a small amount of lees, allowing the fermentation to complete in bottle and left the wine un-disgorged (with sediment) in bottle. I feel this adds purity and complexity that would be lost if removed. The bottl...

James Suckling: "This has neat pastry and citrusy aromas with bright peaches. A smooth, fruit palate with peaches and melons. " (02/2018) Wine Enthusiast: "Rounded and rich, this Blanc de Blancs has both a smooth texture, delicious white fruits and an intense line of acidity. It's clean, fragrant, very fresh. Notes from the winery: "Blue Nun 24K GOLD EDITION is a delicious sparkling wine which is light and elegant with a touch of delicious fruitiness. It achieves its effervescence through a centuries old fermentation process and to highlight the natural bubbles we add genuine approved real 24K gold flakes. The 24K Gold Edition is a great aperitif or accompaniment to light meals and hors d’oeuvres. It is the perfect sparkling wine for special occasions, celebrations or just for fun!"

Wine & Spirits: "This sparkler's zingy lemon-lime flavors evolve into fuller pineapple and citrus notes, a yeasty character adding breadth and weight. The full flavors and light, cardamom-like spice suit it to the dinner table, with rich fish or roasted chicken." (06/2010) K&L Notes: You should always have a handful of bottles of this sparkler on hand for impromptu parties (because a sudden Tuesday night fete with your pals is, of course, better with bubbly). This wallet-friendly "Blanc de Blancs" drinks like an expensive French Champagne, with a rich ...

90 points Wine Spectator: "This sleek sparkler is expressive for its floral apple and toasty cinnamon aromas and crisp, layered flavors of lime and mineral. (TF)" (12/2016) K&L Notes: New Mexico may not be the first place you think of when you think of sparkling wine, but we think you'll agree that Gruet is on a par with some of the best-known names in domestic sparkling wine at this value. In 1984, Gilbert Gruet of the French Champagne house Gruet & Fils made a bold choice to plant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir near Albuquerque, New Mexico. High vineyards...

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Dry, crisp, fresh and incredibly fragrant, this sparkling wine is a terrific bargain. The good news is there are around 4,000 cases of it, although I do not know how much is imported by Kermit Lynch...This cuvee may qualify as the 'wine bargain of the year.' A Champagne-like sparkling rose from the largely forgotten area of Bugey (which only received appellation status in 2009), this low alcohol (8%) offering is made from 90% Gamay and 10% Poulsard (an indigenous grape of the region). (RP)" (02/2012) K&L Notes:...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "Editor's Choice: One of the best Lambruscos out there, this delicious, vibrant wine opens with enticing scents of wild red berry, yellow stone fruit, citrus blossom and a yeasty, comforting whiff of pastry dough. Made by carrying out the secondary fermentation in the bottle, the dry, delicious palate delivers pink grapefruit, crushed strawberry and tangerine alongside crisp acidity and a saline note. KERIN O’KEEFE" (11/2019)

Wine Enthusiast: "There is something candied, almost confected about the pretty Mirabelle fruit on the nose. The palate is fresh with a slightly bitter edge of tartness. This might benefit from a little more bottle age to integrate. (AK) " (11/2018) K&L Notes: A blend of 80% Pinot Blanc and 20% Riesling. Full of tiny bubbles and lemony freshness. An elegant sparkler for less than $20!

From the meadery: "A few years ago, we had the pleasure of visiting an apiary on the Big Island of Hawaii. Beekeepers here alternate between pollinating cultivated crops and allowing their bees to forage freely in the native tropical flora. The Macadamia is a cultivated tree, of course, and honey produced from its nectar is as succulent and rich as the macadamia nut itself. That richness results in a full-bodied, brut dry mead of subtle complexity and exceptional balance that pairs with a wide variety of foods, from raw oysters to smoked duck."

Importer's notes: "The Crnko farm is located on the eastern side of Slovenia, north of Maribor and just south of the Austrian border. It is a breath taking environment of endless rolling green hills lined with vineyards that stretch the length of the horizon. Until 1918, this area was known as Lower Styria (formally Austria) and had been for many centuries. Grapes have also been cultivated here for over 2,000 years in addition to famed aromatic hop fields and ethereal pumpkin seed oil; a real treat with the local wines. The rich agricultural diversity of...

From the winery: "The Cava Jaume Giro enterprise was started in the middle of the 19th century by our farming ancestors. In 1926, Ramón Giró i Mata founded a company that specialised in distilling spirits and winemaking and which, fifty years later, produced their first cava, the embodiment of the artisan philosophy that the Giro family has always maintained: high quality, limited production and selection of grapes from vintages regarded as excellent, with which it is possible to age a wine or cava and enhance the complexity of aromatic characteristics ...

The Sparr winery has more than a little experience making wine in Alsace, having been founded by Jean Sparr back in the ’80s—the 1680s. Nine successive generations have labored to maintain and expand their wine estate. In more recent news, young Pierre Sparr, aged 20, assumed responsibilities for the winery in the early twentieth century. With a forward-thinking motto of “invest, progress, and maintain,” Pierre became a pioneer in estate bottling in Alsace. He maintained a sense of determination through World War II, and rebuilt his family’s beautiful do...

Raventos i Blanc was founded in 1986 by Josep-Maria Raventos, a member of the Codorníu family who wished to create a small, quality-oriented winery that would stand apart from the larger wineries in the area. Today they own about 300 acres of vineyards (with a high percentage of chalk in the soil, like Champagne) planted mostly to local varieties such as Macabeo (Viura), Xarel-lo and Parellada. All three of these grapes, as well as a small portion of direct-press Monastrell, are found in this delicate, beautiful rosé bottling. *organic/biodynamic*
