It all began at John Rexer's Bohemian artist refuge, Café No Se in Antigua, Guatemala. Opened in 2003, Café No Se became the heart of a thriving expat and artisan community of Antigua. As John's business grew, his interest in mezcal led him to "import" the mystical spirit in very "creative" ways. His customers took to the spirit and to satisfy the growing demand, he was forced to...

5 Sentidos K&L Exclusive Espadin "Batch ESALB01-19" (Alberto Martinez) Santa Catarina Albarradas Uncertified Oaxacan Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
5 Sentidos started as the house spirit of the acclaimed restaurant in Oaxaca city "El Destilado" and has become a platform to uplift numerous traditional producers who otherwise wouldn't be able to sell their products on the international stage. There's a stigma in Mexico of exporting uncertified agave spirits, driven by the idea that mezcal's denomination of origin is synonymous with quality. In fact, the system shuts out many traditional producers and allows countless industrial practices that should be considered inferior. That's why many of the great...

YOLA Mezcal has reached perfect balance between authenticity and aesthetics. Created in collaboration between Yola Jiminez (of La Clandestina Mezcaleria fame), Lykke Li (Swedish songwriting sensation), and Gina Correll Aglietti (chef and stylist), YOLA counters the patriarchal system which is so ubiquitous in the Oaxaca. YOLA is run by women and bottled by women. We've seen time and again that no palenque succeeds without the aid of a strong women, and YOLA provides a place where the women of Oaxaca can have steady work. In addition, they happen to be ma...

I first stumbled across the Verde Momento at an excellent bar called Guilty in Guadalajara. This city is vibrant, complex, and cosmopolitan, filled with excellent food and highbrow cocktail stops along side old school saloons, bad tourist traps and well worn corners where some of the world's finest tacos are slung. When I saw the wild label across the bar, I imagined that this must be some new boutique-y, ultra-limited mezcal, but when the bartender reached for it to prepare my cocktail, I realized that this might just be something more attainable. Turns...

Wine & Spirits: "Named after the village celebrations for which mezcal was originally produced, El Jolgorio Mezcal presents a study in agave species with nine different bottlings. Each one is made from wild-harvested varieties by Zapotec distillers, with the names of the villages, makers, agave types and age inscribed on each bottle...Even the company’s entry-level mezcal, Nuestra Soledad, made from farm-grown espadín agave, is complex, with tamarind, chervil and citrus sweetness. Certainly worth serving at any village celebration." (06/2014) K&L Notes...

This espadin (A. Angustifolia) mezcal is the perfect place to start for anyone looking to explore the world of quality mezcal or for a relatively inexpensive option for your mezcal based cocktails. It's very approachable and laden with sweet agave fruit. The smoke component is decidedly there, but not very intense. A rich texture makes this a delightful sipper or stout component in a mezcal variant of the Last Word.

5 Sentidos K&L Exclusive Ensamble De 6 Magueyes "Batch 6M-19" (Atenogenes and José Garcia) San Isidro Guishe Uncertified Oaxacan Mezcal (750ml)
Top Pick!
This incredible small-batch mezcal was created by the Atenogenes and José Garcia in the town of San Isidro Guishe. A re-creation of what would have been typical in mezcal production just a few decades ago, a field blend in the truest sense of the word. Here the father and son team harvested the mature agave from a single field grown by a neighbor. In exchange the neighbor (or Magueyero) received forty liters of this incredible batch of mezcal, a fine payment for the nearly 2 tons of ripe agave that were needed to distill this 183-liter batch. Most of the...

Mezonte is a non-governmental organization dedicated to promoting, supporting, and preserving the production and practices of traditional agave spirits of Mexico. The main objective is to create awareness of the cultural and biological value inherent in these incredible spirits. There's a particular emphasis on the spirits of Jalisco and Michoacan, but all agave spirits could be featured. The incredible organization began in a little bar in Guadalajara where Pedro Jiminez began to educate about these special spirits. The Tepe comes from Aciano Mendoza a ...

From Mezcal Reviews: "El Jolgorio translates to 'the revelry.' Jolgorios are small festivals that occur in remote, mountain villages throughout Oaxaca, Mexico. They celebrate births, deaths, weddings and Saint’s days. For centuries, the lifeblood of these celebrations has been traditional mezcal. In 2010, the Cortés family began building a collective of top mezcal distillers from around Oaxaca. As of 2019, El Jolgorio represents sixteen different families, working in ten different regions of Oaxaca, Mexico, each with its own special story. Every bottle i...

Wine Enthusiast: "This clear and light-bodied mezcal has a faintly smoky aroma and a mildly peppery flavor. A potent, alcoholic finish fades into black pepper. (KN)" (12/2010) K&L Notes: This entry level bottling called "Vida" allows for all of the purity and beauty that one extracts from Del Maguey's hand-crafted distillations at a more affordable price. The "Vida" is still produced 100% according to the 400-year-old local tradition of small-batch distillation and using nothing but the agave heart and water in the mezcal. Del Maguey was named "Distill...

Don Mateo "K&L Exclusive" Pechuga Mezcal (750ml) (Previously $100) (Previously $100)
Top Pick!
The Vieyras are widely regarded as one of Michoacán's very best distillers, but this special bottling, unlike the standard Don Mateo, is Delia's special recipe. Delia Vargas Vieyra is literally the quintessential Mexican matriarch. She welcomed us at the Vinyata when we visited in February and was feeding us immediately. This special batch of Pechuga (despite what the labels say) began with a blend of Cupreata and Cenizo. Roasted over sustainably harvested (no green wood) pine and oak with a tiny bit of mesquite as a starter. Crushed manually and ferment...

The man, the myth, the legend…the mysterious mezcalero Don Celso of Rio Golea is spoken of in reverential terms by agave cognoscenti all over. Celso distills only this one core varietal, but does it so beautifully that we couldn’t dream of asking for anything else. Truly legendary Espadín, which speaks deeply of varietal and place, with bold fruit and hints of hard cheese on the nose, and minerality, weight, and earthy musculature on the palate.

Del Maguey Tobala Mezcal (750ml)
Back In Stock!
Wine Enthusiast: "This single-village mezcal made from wild mountain maguey (agave) has a clean, peppery flavor and high, sweet fragrance with a peppery zing. (KN)" (12/2010) K&L Notes: Del Maguey was named "Distiller of the Year" at the 2011 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Tobalá is a special variety of wild mountain maguey (agave) that is smaller in size with larger leaves than the more widely cultivated espadin (sword) or azul (blue) agave varieties. According to local legend, tobalá is the original maguey, cultivated by the Ancestors to ma...

According to the importer: "The “mother” of Agave karwinskii, the large and resinous Madrecuishe grows tall and proud in Miahuatlán. A long, cylindrical trunk (which harvested resembles a huge cigar) is topped with a tall, green bloom of leaves, spreading out from the trunk’s heart. From this trunk or stem, the Madrecuishe carries a lot of fiber alongside its highly concentrated sugars. A balance of fruity and vegetal notes is a hallmark of the distillate, implying everything from leafy green herbs to sweet carrots to raspberry seeds."

This wonderful Mexicano (Agave Rhodancantha) was distilled by a high quality palenque in Santiago Matatlan. El Samaritano is the personal brand of the distillers, the Blas Family. The family has been making mezcal for three generations and still makes uses traditional artesenal techniques. The patriarche, Ambrosio Martinez Blas, has been working in the palenque since he was a young boy and plans to leave the distillery to his son. They'd never used Mexicano before and this special batch yielded less than 700 bottles. It's won double gold at the San Franc...

This single batch of Rey Campero mezcal yeilded roughly 264 bottles, half of which remained in Mexico. The other half is exclusive to K&L. Distilled in October 2017, this batch rested for 30 months in glass before being bottled. This extended resting process gives this particular batch an increased sense of smoothness and elegance while carrying all of the robust flavors of Tepextate (A. Marmorata) and Pulquero (A. Atrovirens) agaves. This unique 50/50 field blend was a one time production created by Romulo Sanchez almost 3 years ago. This is one of the ...

The complex Dasylirion plant is a cousin of the agave, but modern botany places it in the Nolinoideae family whose flat leaves don't produce sap like the agave. The desert spoon is prolific across Mexico and the American southwest and it's been harvest in the wild to make spirit for centuries. The plant, able to survive in diverse terroir, takes on the flavors of its environment more distinctly than even agave and they flowering portion of the plant, the quiote, is produced every year. The plants can take up to two decades to mature and at least 5 differ...

Los Vecinos Del Campo is the new mezcal project from Sazerac and Carmen Villareal of Casa San Matias. As with any upstart mezcal brand our first instinct is to tread with caution. There's alot of opportunity to get things wrong when bringing a new mezcal to market, but we're extremely happy to note that our friends from New Orleans avoided all of them. Instead, we get an incredible affordable authentic artesenal mezcal from the village of San Miguel Ejutla in Oaxaca's central valley. Erick Rodriguez is widely known as one of Mexico's most knowledgable and adventerous bottlers of Mezcal. His tiny shop, Almamezcalera, has become famous among the agave cognicenti and his selections are legendary. We're very lucky to have access to this tiny unusual batch of uncertified mezcal (bottled as aguardiente de agave). Maestro Patricio Hernandez cooks the piñas in a stone oven, then mills the cooked agave using a traditional tahona; to ferment, however, around 30% fresh pulque is added to the crushed agave in a pine vat (a 'tina'), almost like a...

Harvested after growing 20–25 years in the wild, the Tepeztate grows to be massive; nearly the size of a VW Bug or a Mini Cooper. Found at high elevations, they often grow directly out of sheer rock walls and cliff faces, giving shade to smaller agave (such as Tobala) growing nearby. With huge leaves (pencas) lolling out, their brilliant, red teeth serrating a soft and textured flesh, the Tepeztate is arguably the most varietally consistent agave in distillation. Notes of green bananas, soft flowers, bell peppers, and melons recur in numerous examples, a...

The latest addition to our selection of craft mezcals hails from the heart the Mexican highlands in Durango. Made from 10- to 13-year-old piñas of agave cenizo, Burrito Fiestero is entirely handcrafted (with the help of some small but hardy donkeys or "burritos"). Notes from the distiller: "Burrito Fiestero is made out of agave cenizo, endemic to the state of Durango. This maguey takes from 10 -13 years to mature. Once naked from its spikes, it is carried and trasported by donkey down the mountain to begin with the elaboration process. It is here where o...

Grown at high elevation (around 5,000 ft), tucked into the countryside surrounding the highly regarded mezcal producing village of San Baltazar Guelavila, this is a benchmark example of classic Tobala. A strong balance between earth, smoke, and sweet yam, with a dry salinity on the finish and a rich mouthfeel. The tiny Tobala agave, harvested wild at 10–15 years old, yields very low amounts of sugar (and thus, mezcal); it can take up to three plants to produce one bottle.

After Breaking Bad wrapped, Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston were pretty bummed out they wouldn't be working together anymore, so they did what any spirit loving person would do and decided to start a Mezcal brand. However, they also learned lessons from some other celeb brands and realized they didn't want to just slap their name on something they liked, but source a quality product from real artisans. Turns out that Bryan and Aaron have quite different tastes when it comes to ...

The Clande brand celebrates the great Maestro Sotoleros who distill Sotol from the Desert Spoon and Lechuguilla (mezcal) from Agave in Mexico's northern states. Here distillation was prohibited in the 1900s and the Vinata owners were persecuted and incarcerated. Clande celebrates those old masters who continued the tradition in secret - the clandestine distiller. The project supports small local producers and protect the sustainability of the Sotol plant. This tiny production Sotol comes from Eduardo Arrieta, whose volume is less than 1,000 liters per ye...

The massive Arroqueño, a subspecies of the Agave americana, typically takes around twenty years to mature. Grown wild, the varietal was nearly extinct just a few decades ago, but has recovered in recent years, its population regrowing especially in southern Oaxacan districts like Miahuatlán through the efforts of mezcaleros and conservation activists in the region. Coveted for its high concentration of sugars over decades of growth, the mezcal tends to offer a fruity and fragrant approach, balanced with high proof and a rich body. A rare gem to experienc...

Madre Mezcal hails from the tiny village of San Dionisio Ocotepec. In between Chichicapam and Matatlan, the village is in the heart of Mezcal country. A blend of estate grown Espadin and wild harvest Cuishe, the agave is cooked for days over pine. After being pressed in the traditional tahona, the juice is fermented naturally over the course of nearly two weeks and distilled twice in copper potstills. D...
