Producer Christophe Hallereau wasn't interested in being in the wine business until he inherited his family vineyards. While maintaining his day job in agriculture, he became a weekend warrior winemaker maintaining the property and the cellar library. Years later and with 8 hectares in the village of Vallet, he now runs the local association of growers. All wines are fermented in concrete with native yeasts and minimal additions of SO2. Subsoils in the region are igneous with vineyards composed primarily of mica-schist. Vallet is a pending cru appellatio...

Producer, Christophe Hallereau wasn't interested in being in the wine business until he inherited his family vineyards. The vines are planted on a mix of mica-schist but mostly granitic soils, lending brilliant mineral tones to the wine. It is aged in tank for 8 months sur lie before bottling. Jolie-Laide is a one-man operation based in a Sebastopol winery where winemaker Scott Schultz makes only 2,500 cases of wine a year under his own label. The name Jolie-Laide translates loosely to “Pretty-Ugly”, a French term of endearment to describe something that is unconventionally beautiful. Scott’s passion for wine was ignited when moved to Napa from Chicago in 2007. Having had extensive experience in the restaurant business, he switched gears upon his arrival in California to lead the wine program at Thomas Keller’s Bouchon. Working a harvest and a...

2019 Lieu Dit Santa Maria Valley Melon de Bourgogne
New!
91 points Vinous: "The 2019 Melon, from Bien Nacido, is laced with green orchard fruit, mint, lime and white flowers. Here, too, the interplay of energy and tension makes for a compelling and refreshing dry white. The 2019 is light on its feet, but there is plenty of depth too. Most importantly, this thirst-quenching white is absolutely delicious. I loved it. (AG)" (08/2020)

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2018 Melon was whole-cluster pressed and aged on the lees. "We're trying to make it as crunchy, bright and fresh as possible," Lieu Dit co-founder Justin Willett says. It offers aromas of Bosc pear, green apple, baker's yeast and faint white blossoms with crushed shell, white peach and lime peel. The palate is light-bodied, tangy and lively with a cleansing finish. Perfect food wine! (EB)" (09/2019) Vinous: "The 2018 Melon is a delicious, crisp dry white to drink now and over the next few years. Citrus, white flowers...
