Szöke focuses on white wines made from the grapes of the Olaszrizling (Italian Riesling), Sylvaner, Hárslevelü (Linden-Leaf), Ottonel Muscatel, Tramini, Király Leányka, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and the oddly named Irsai Oliver. 2017 Szaszi Olaszrizling Lake Balaton Hungary

Made from grapes harvested from an organically-farmed vineyard. Olaszrizling is the Hungarian name for Welschriesling, a variety that is unrelated to Rhine Riesling. This grape, when vinified properly, can create a wine that is mineral, salty, and full of stone fruit flavors.

2017 Samuel Tinon "Birtok" Furmint Tokaj Hungary

Importer's notes: "'Birtok' roughly translates to 'domain' and allows various vineyards to be blended together. For Samuel Tinon, this means pulling from the famed Határi vineyard near the village of Olaszliszka and off of the dense loess slopes of Mt. Tokaj above the village of Tokaj. Blending these two sites yields an intensely unique Furmint. The fruit is ripe, the acids are high and there’s plenty of structure to create a pungent balance. 2017 Wetzer Kékfrankos Soproni Hungary

From Juice Imports: "This wine is made from parcels all around the ancient town of Sopron on the Austrian border. The vines are all well over thirty years old and are planted on a variety of soils including schist, loam, limestone and loess. The grapes are fermented in open top wooden vats with 5% remaining whole-clusters. It then ages in old neutral barrels on lees without stirring."

2017 Kikelet "Lónyai" Hárslevelu Tokaj Hungary

Importer's notes: "In contrast to the Origo blend, Stéphanie never blends anything with Lónyai. This is a stand alone site. Tarcal is usually defined largely by loess soils, but it is of course more complicated than that. There is also chalk, dacite, and perlite that make vineyards like Lónyai susceptible to erosion but not as water retentive as clay. The acids here are sour and need aging, but once they balance out, it’s one of the most elegant and intense Hárslevelus in the region. Built to age, ideally we drink this 3-5 years after vintage."
