Mas Codina Cava Brut Reserva Penedès

Mas Codina is a 40-hectare estate in Penedès which dates back to 1681. This Brut Reserva Cava was hand-harvested from 25- to 40-year-old vines and estate-bottled. Though it does not say it on the label, the current disgorgement is based entirely on the 2015 harvest. Vines are planted in calcareous and sandy clay soils which keep the wine minerally and lively. The wine undergoes secondary fermentation in the bottle, and is aged on its lees for a minimum of two years before disgorgement. 91-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The sparkling rosé 2011 MM de Loxarel is a very pale blend of Xarello with 40% Pinot Noir that matured in bottle with the lees for no less than 42 months. The wine is more orange than pink, perhaps a darker shade of amber, and does not have any character of a rosé. Instead, it's leesy and a bit earthy, and the palate is very tasty, with yeasty flavors and a saline, almost marine sensation in the finish. 2016 Mas Codina Cabernet Sauvignon Penedes

Mas Codina is an estate in the middle Penedes, about an hour's drive from Barcelona. They own about 40 hectares, most of which are planted to Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada, and Pinot Noir, with some Syrah, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon as well. While they have been farming organically for a while, they will be certified organic beginning with the 2017 vintage. 2013 Agusti Torello Mata Cava Brut Reserva Penedes

A blend of 45% Macabeu, 34% Parellada and 21% Xarel-lo, the vintage-dated 2015 Brut Reserva was disgorged in October of 2018, having spent three years on the lees. The resulting wine is an excellent example of what Cava can be. The nose is clean and fruity with hints of apple, caramel and fresh herbs. The palate is elegant and balanced with well-integrated bubbles and excellent balance. Agusti Torello Mata is one of the most respected cava producers in Spain, focusing solely on vintage dated Cavas and wines at the Reserva level and up.
