2016 Casa Castillo Monastrell Jumilla

91 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The first wine in the range is the 2016 Monastrell, which in reality contains some 8% combination of Garnacha and Syrah, cropped from a more continental, cooler and dry vintage. Like all the wines from the property, it fermented with indigenous yeasts, in this case with grapes from different plots, and matured in used oak barrels for eight to nine months. Juicy, primary, incredibly fresh and with a vertical palate, longer than wider, like a hypothetical blend of 2013 and 2015, cool but dry. This is always a great ...

2017 Bodegas Olivares Rosado Jumilla

Just like the famous rosés of Bandol (Tempier, Pradeaux, et al), this Olivares rosé has a solid chunk of Monastrell direct press juice blended with Garnacha (70%) thrown in as well. This is nearly as good as them, and about one-third the price, so we suggest you try the wine and load up before we run out! Highly recommended.

2016 Bodegas Olivares Monastrell Dulce Jumilla (500ml)

A late harvest 100% Monastrell dessert wine that is produced only when the conditions allow, about 5 to 6 vintages per decade. Winery tasting note: "This Dulce is the ultimate expression of Monastrell, with tremendous concentration, persistence and balance. Cherry-red color, with carmine and maroon tones. Complex smelling, the aroma of figs, dates and ripe fruits can be smelled with intensity and freshness. It combines perfectly with all kind of desserts, specially those made with chocolate, and for contrast, with blue and aged cheeses."

2016 Ben Haines "B Minor" GSM Nagambie Lakes

90 points Wine & Spirits: "When Ben Haines isn’t making wine at Mount Langi Ghiran, he produces his own range from soils he finds particularly compelling. This blend, based on mourvedre (60 percent), comes from vines planted in 1969 at the Mitchelton Vineyard. Its scents of raspberry, allspice, roses and horse stables combine in a fragrant, high-toned, peppery red. A note of cigar tobacco comes up with air, adding to the wine’s complexity. Decant it to serve with roast lamb." (02/2017) Wine Spectator: "Cranberry and pomegranate flavors are fresh and vi ...

2014 Domaine de la Begude Bandol Rouge

94 points Wine Enthusiast: "This is an impressively rich, still very young wine. Dominated by Bandol's own Mourvèdre grape, it is dense and concentrated. Spice and dark red fruits are shot through with a wonderful herbal character that conjures the southern warmth. The wine is still just setting out and will not be ready to drink before 2019. (RV)" (07/2017) K&L Notes: Guillaume and Soledad Tari run this beautiful estate in the elevated seaside appellation of Bandol. Bandol is an incredible micro-climate with its concave shaped vineyards that gain the ...

2016 Skinner El Dorado Mourvedre

92 points Wine Enthusiast: "This classy wine offers a mix of spice rack and black cherry aromas, with rich plum, earth and rhubarb flavors. There is balance between ripeness of fruit and tension from the tannins and acidity. It stands on it own as a beautifully complex but not heavy wine. (JG)" (11/2018) 91 points Wine Spectator: "Distinctive, plump and showing personality, this offers flavors of dried cherry, fruitcake spices and orange peel that end with zesty tannins. Drink now through 2024. 388 cases made. (TF)" (03/2019)

2017 Tessier "Goldbud Vineyard" El Dorado County Mourvedre

Winemaker's Notes: "The 2017 Mourvedre from the Goldbud Vineyard has a deep violet hue and exotic, heady aromas of lilacs, lavender, mulberry and boysenberry, black pepper, anise and petrichor. The palate shows a brilliant range of flavors from plum skin and candied violets to ginger, lacquered apple and Chinese Five Spice. These grapes were lovingly lady foot-stomped. 33% whole cluster adds a brambly aroma and rich texture. Sustainably farmed. Aged in neutral French oak barrels. 13.5% alcohol. 208 cases."

2009 Bodegas El Nido "Clio" Jumilla

95 points Jeb Dunnuck: "Possibly my favorite vintage of this to date, the brilliant 2009 Bodegas El Nido Jumilla Clio, mostly old vine Monastrell that’s aged in new French oak, boasts awesome aromatics of smoky blackberry and crème de cassis that’s intermixed with notions of roasted coffee, chocolate, mineral, and sweet spice on the nose. Full-bodied, impeccably balanced, and awesomely fresh and focused, this blockbuster has layers of sweet fruit and texture, ripe tannin, and a detailed, clean finish. While no doubt a seriously fruited wine that carries ...

2015 Andremily California Mourvedre

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Produced from 92% Mourvèdre, 5% Syrah and 3% Viognier using 73% whole cluster and spending about 21 months in French oak (50% new), the 2015 Mourvedre has a deep garnet-purple color and a lovely spice cake, fragrant earth and fallen leaves-scented nose over the core of plum pudding, blackberry tart and black cherry compote, plus touches of anise and coffee. 2010 Tablas Creek Paso Robles Mourvèdre

92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "I find stunning beauty and purity in Tablas Creek’s 2010 Mourvedre. Rich yet weightless, it offers up plum, camphor, tobacco, spices and mint, all to match an impossibly refined, gracious personality. The 2010 is rich yet not at all heavy. It is a wine of incomparable textural finesse. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2022. As always, my tasting at Tablas Creek was a bit of a marathon session covering several dozen wines, but that is just a testament to a world-class winery that excels at so many things. This year I t ...

2007 Bodegas El Nido "El Nido" Jumilla (nicked label)

This is a highly collectible wine, with scores from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate typically coming in in the 97- to 99-point range. Will Aussie winemaker extraordinaire Chris Ringland rack up another perfect 100 pointer, his first from Spain? Only time will tell. 70% Cabernet, 30% Monastrell. (Joe Manekin, K&L Spanish wine buyer) 96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Its stable-mate, the 2007 El Nido, is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell from the same vineyard sites and it received the same elevage. It, too, has a splendid, nearl ...

2017 I. Brand & Family "Enz Vineyard" Lime Kiln Valley Old Vine Mourvèdre

From Matt Kettmann: "Ian Brand, The SF Chronicle’s 2018 Winemaker of the Year, is quite possibly the most interesting vintner in Monterey County today. The Connecticut-raised, former Bonny Doon cellar rat and one-time assistant at Big Basin is sourcing from so many distinct, often old-vine sites, and spearheading so many different consulting projects. Though quite varied in styles and grapes, the wines are all very energetic, distinctive and extremely fairly priced."

2016 Domaine Tempier "Migoua" Bandol

Jeb Dunnuck writes: "Easily the most widely recognized estate in Bandol, Domaine Tempier has been run by the Peyraud family since 1936. Today, with the passing of Lucien Peyraud in 1996 and the retirement of sons Francois and Jean-Marie, the estate is run by the tall, energetic and talented Daniel Ravier—who speaks with a refreshing honesty and humility. Looking at the reds, the estate fashions four cuvees, a classic Bandol from a mix of terroirs, and three single vineyards—La Migoua, La Tourtine and Cabassaou. Lying outside the village of Le Beausset, t ...

2016 Cline "Ancient Vines" Contra Costa County Mourvèdre

Wine Spectator: "Tightly wound and framed by taut tannins, but remains distinctive for the dried cherry, eucalyptus and cracked pepper beef accents. Best after 2018." (04/2018) K&L Notes: One of the better deals in old-vine California wines, Cline's "Ancient Vines" series comes from their treasured old vineyards that are planted in sandy soil in the Delta region--not quite Central Valley, and just southeast of Napa Valley. Mourvedre, now a hit with Central Coast Rhone Rangers, and fans of the wines of the south of France, was popular many decades ago, ...

2017 Waterkloof Circumstance "Cape Coral" Mourvèdre Rosé Stellenbosch (Biodynamic) (Previously $17)

A perennial staff and customer favorite at K&L, this is one of our best-selling and most-raved-about rosés every year. Hand-picked from biodynamically farmed, old Mourvèdre vines in a cool coastal sub-region of Stellenbosch, it's a fresh, elegant wine that does a fantastic impression of Bandol (which is also predominantly made from Mourvèdre), but at a fraction of the cost! Waterkloof is a stunning property working with very natural, non-interventionist methods. The wines are pure, expressive, and precisely balanced. I am excited to work with Waterkloof ...

2007 Bodegas El Nido "El Nido" Jumilla

96 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Its stable-mate, the 2007 El Nido, is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Monastrell from the same vineyard sites and it received the same elevage. It, too, has a splendid, nearly ethereal perfume, a full-bodied, voluptuous personality, and unrestrained power. It is a bit more structured than the Clio bottling and will offer a drinking window extending from 2013 to 2025, perhaps longer although these wines have no track record of longevity. 2005 Core Wine Company "Mister Moreved Alta mesa Vineyard" Santa Barbara County Rhone Blend

94 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 Mister Moreved Alta Mesa Vineyard (82% Mourvedre and 18% Grenache) exhibits a blueberry, raspberry, truffle oil-filled personality, wonderful ripeness, medium to full body, good acidity, and a dry, heady, firm finish. It is another stunning effort to consume over the next 5-6 years. These are all creative, individualistic wines that reveal considerable soul and character. One has to admire the wacky art on the label as well as the non-conformist blends. Most important from a consumer’s perspective, the w ...

2005 Bodegas El Nido "El Nido" Jumilla

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2005 El Nido is a selection of the best grapes from the same vineyards. Opaque purple-colored, it has even better perfume than Clio. Already complex, it offers up a toasty aromatic array of violet, lavender, espresso, chocolate, blueberry compote, and blackberry liqueur. Smooth-textured and dense, the wine is rich and mouth-filling. It has a decade of aging potential at the least but is so juicy now that it would pair well with a 60-day dry-aged rib eye. It will show best between 2015 and 2030. (JM)" (02/2008 ...

2016 Domaine Tempier Bandol

From Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant: "When Lucie “Lulu” Tempier married Lucien Peyraud in 1936, her father gave them Domaine Tempier, an active farm that had been in the family since 1834, near Le Plan du Castellet, just outside the Mediterranean seaport village of Bandol. Tasting a pre-phylloxera bottle of Domaine Tempier Bandol (a wedding gift from his father-in-law) inspired Lucien to research the terroir of Bandol extensively. Up until that point, old vineyards planted with Mourvèdre had been systematically replanted to higher-yielding varietals. Howeve ...

2014 Beaumont Mourvedre, Bot River (Previously $35)

Vinous: " The 2014 Mourvèdre was matured for 24 months in oak (8% new) and then 12 months in bottle before release. The lifted, spearmint-scented bouquet feels a little monotone at the moment and needs to muster more complexity. The palate is sweet on the entry, featuring raspberry preserve, boysenberry, sea salt and a touch of spice. This is well balanced and shows more refinement on the finish than the nose suggests. Give it another year in bottle, as it may well improve. (NM)" (08/2018) K&L Notes: The history of the Beaumont estate stretches back to ...

2017 Domaine de la Ferme Blanche Cassis Rouge (Previously $25)

A beautiful terroir skillfully worked by Jérôme Paret and Philippe Garnier. Responding to the call of his parents, Jérômine gave up a career as an English teacher to take over the family estate. She then studied business and allied herself with Philippe Garnier, who has one goal in mind: to achieve excellence. She does not regret her choices today and her customers don't either! Thus, the estate evolves each year with new wines and techniques.

2004 Bodegas El Nido "Clio" Jumilla

97 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The consulting winemaker at Bodegas El Nido is Chris Ringland of Barossa Valley fame. The 2004 Clio is 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 70% Monastrell (from 63-year-old vines) which received malolactic fermentation in new oak followed by 26 months of aging in new French and American barriques. A glass-coating opaque purple, it exhibits a sensational nose of earth, mushroom, leather, blueberry, and blackberry jam. On the palate the wine is supple-textured, complex, with vibrant flavors of spicy blue and black fruits and ...

2015 Two Mile Wines "Tanner Vineyard" Sierra Foothills Mourvèdre (Previously $23)

Winemaker's Notes: "This is one of the more elusive of the 13 allowed red Rhone varietals. We used ours mostly for blending--like the French do--but the small amount we held back for its own bottling was constantly in maturation flux. It was super, soaking morel mushroom funky, for a while then tightened up and was full of black fruit. It's in a really good place now but will continue to evolve in a more linear fashion for the next 2-3 years. It's like a darker, more rustic Pinot Noir with more granular textured tannins. 105 cases, 13.6%, TA 6.7g/L, 25 n ...
