Wine Enthusiast: "The bouquet offers integrated scents of roasted chestnut, dried tobacco leaf, maple, orange zest, brown sugar, cinnamon and egg cream. The palate entry is curiously medicinal; the midpalate improves as the taste includes bittersweet flavors of old oak, wood resin, molasses and tree sap. Concludes intensely sap- and maple-like." (05/2007) K&L Notes: *Best Premium Gold Rum - 2011 Ministry of Rum Tasting Competition* A blend of Diplomatico's three still types aged for a minimum of 12 years. Dense and complex with the hints of pot still p...

One of the very best unaged agricole rhums available. From the historic JM distillery on the far-flung northern coast of Martinque, this is easily on of the best values in this expensive and labor intensive style of rhum production. JM has long been considered one of the island's finest, and we're incredibly lucky to be able to offer it at this incredible price. 96 points Beverage Testing Institute: "Clear color. Aromas of underripe guava, grilled artichoke, water chestnuts, and marjoram with a round, lively, dry medium body and a peppery, complex, very ...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "A muted aroma of brown sugar and milk chocolate with traces of peanut and black pepper. The elegant yet assertive palate entry is firm, peppery, moderately sweet, and cane-like; at midpalate the texture turns silky, semisweet and cocoa-like to the taste, and eminently elegant and sophisticated in style. Finishes sweet, honeyed, medium-bodied, svelte and utterly yummy. " (08/2005)

The very special Avua Cachaca is from one of Brasil's highest quality cachaca producers. There are essentially two types of Cachaca, industrial and artisanal. This is truly the artisanal style, hand crafted from field to bottle. Because of the small scale and seasonal nature of production, each batch will be a unique expression of the soil, sun, and stills. This is not the stinky harsh Cachaca that some many people are used to. Instead, this is clean and bright with incredibly precise aromas of fresh tropical fruits and lush floral tones. A brilliant exa...

95 points Wine Enthusiast: "A top pick for tiki and tropical drinks, this practically begs for lime juice. Scented with warm honey notes, the palate shows lots of brown sugar and spice, plus an enticingly untamed, funky finish (the fabled 'hogo'). Since it’s 'Navy Strength,' you might not want to sip it straight up—the producer wisely recommends exploring the profile first in a daiquiri—though it’s smooth and interesting enough if you want to try. " (08/2014) K&L Notes: The original Jamaica rum is back. It's been 80 years and true Jamaica pot still rum...

Michel Sajous built his distillery, Chelo, where his family had cultivated cane since the 1960s on 30 hectares of land outside of Saint Michel de l'Attalaye, 100 miles north of Port-au-Prince. The small plantation is planted to many varietals of cane. The primary cultivar is Crystal, the same type used at Neisson on Martinique. Here, production is 100% organic with no chemicals or artificial fertilizers used of any kind. The cane is collected by hand and pressed immediately. The juice is sometimes concentrated slightly using steam, which allows the disti...

The fermented juice is distilled in potstills and aged in American Oak for upwards of five years. A truly unique expression of Sugarcane juice rum from one of Japan's most interesting distillers.

This stunning Charanda from Uruapan is distilled from 100% fresh-pressed cane. It's softer and a touch less funky than many of its Caribbean cousins, but it is one of the best examples of the texture, depth of flavor, and nuance available from cane spirit. It has a lovely, fresh-baked bread quality to it and is terrific on its own or cocktails.

This is first-class Guatemalan rum is made from virgin sugar cane honey—the first press of the sugar cane that's boiled down to thicken—rather than molasses, which is a byproduct of the sugar-making process. This results in a finer, sweeter, smoother rum. Aged in the solera method, like sherry, the Zacapa Centenario is very dark—mahogany with coppery tints—and has a clove, cocoa, cinnamon and orange peel-scented nose. The palate is sweet and smooth, with cocoa, orange and honey flavors and a sensuous, viscous texture. It finishes long and smooth. It rece...

93 points Wine Enthusiast: "The producer describes this blend of two particularly aromatic, intense rums as 'unapologetically funky.' That’s an accurate description for this amber-hued rum, which opens with bright tropical fruit aromas and a drying cedar-and-maple palate. Overall, the effect is that of ripe banana drizzled with maple and sprinkled with nutmeg and cayenne. (KN)" (06/2019) K&L Notes: Billed as the first historically accurate Mai Tai rum to be sold commercially, that is, a rum approximating one of the now-long-gone Caribbean spirits used ...

The Arawaks Distillery is located in the village of Cavaillon in the southern or "Sud" province of Haiti. There Fritz Vaval harvests cane for his special rum by hand. The hand cut cane, in this case of the varietal "Madame Meuze," is collected pressed and into the fermenters in a matter of hours. The rustic open air distillery creates the perfect conditions for spontaneous wild fermentation and the incredibly volatile soup of fresh sugarcane juice feeds numerous yeast and bacteria that live naturally on the cane and in the distillery. The wart is distill...

Not to be confused with Lebanese Arak (an anise-flavored spirit similar to Ouzo) or Sri Lankan Arak (a distilled palm wine made from coconut milk), Batavia Arrack is a Javanese/Dutch distilled spirit made from sugarcane and fermented red rice. It's prized for its ability to highlight spices, citrus, and chocolate. This spirit, which was traded by the Dutch East India Company, was especially popular in the heyday of the "Punch", which was between the late 17th and 19th centuries. This is a quintessential ingredient in many of the Punch recipes included in...

Wine & Spirits: "*Year's Best Spirits 2016* Some of the world’s best rums are being made by a man who cut his teeth on Cognac, Alexandre Gabriel, owner of Maison Ferrand. Not long after reviving that brandy house, Gabriel turned his attention to rum, creating Plantation and endowing it with a Cognac distiller’s sense of balance, elegance and variety. OFTD (Old-Fashioned Traditional Dark), created with input from rum specialists including cocktail historian David Wondrich and tiki expert Martin Cate, is a blockbuster. Earlier Plantation dark rums had reli...

90-95 points Wine Enthusiast: "An earthy, dry, clean, and bean- and cane-like aroma with delicate scents of cocoa bean, vanilla bean, and brown sugar. The palate entry is bittersweet, concentrated and beany; at midpalate the flavor profile becomes sweeter and more like vanilla extract. The bean intensity reaches its bittersweet zenith in the high-flying aftertaste. Chic, racy, and delicious. *Superb, Highly Recommended*" (06/2006) K&L Notes: Distilled and bottled on the island paradise of Mauritius. The locally grown cane matures on volcanic soils, whi...
