This was laid down by the Smuggler's Cove Rumbustion Club on their visit to Ipswitch, MA. Martin and I tasted through our lineup of samples blind because we knew their cask would be in the lineup and we wanted to evaluate it un-biased. Turns out it was also the finest cask in our selection so we had no conflict in deciding what to purchase! The Queen' Share designation comes from an old tradition that held back the very best barrels for royalty. However, this special moniker doesn't just mean a cask selection. It takes a special collection of the richest...

Privateer Rum "Distiller's Drawer - K&L Exclusive" Bottled-In-Bond American Rum (750ml)
Top Pick!
Now available in California - Privateer makes their debut with a killer cask of their bottled in bond rum selected by K&L and Martin Cate of Smuggler's Cove. Martin has described Privateer as one of the best producer of rum in America, and it's the casks like this that makes that claim possible. Privateer was certainly the first modern producer, if not the only one, to adhere to the strict Bottled-In-Bond standards for their rum. Aged in new American oak, #3 char. The incredible distillery on St Lucia is one of the rum world's best kept secret. Most real rum fans would prefer you never learned of it's wonders. Recently the distillery was sold and their new owners are the same as Rhum Clement and JM in Martinique, close friends. We were given an incredible opportunity to purchase a single cask of some of their rare experimental stocks. This outstanding barrel is the result. The spirit is a targeted 50/50 mix of molasses-based distillates made on the John Dore No.1 Pot Still (JD1) and the Coffey Column Still (C/S). ...

Foursquare Rum Distillery is located on a former sugar plantation that dates back to approximately 1720, within the tiny Caribbean island of Barbados. The distillery was re-opened by the Seale family in 1996, and distilling operations and blending are currently directed by Richard Seale, 4th Generation Trader/Distiller of R.L. Seale & Co. They've become renowned as one of the most important and diligent distillers of rum in the world. The new single vintage cask strength is a Single Blended Rum from the estate's traditional pot still and twin column stil...

From ArteNOM tequila mastermind Jake Lustig comes a new rum project that celebrates the Panama-Pacific relationship between San Francisco and the South American country. From Panama's famed growing region of La Provincia de Herrera comes a delicious sipping rum distilled from estate-grown sugar cane molasses that is then barrel-aged in 220 liter ex-Bourbon casks. Aged for twenty-three years and imported directly to CA by Haas Brothers in San Francisco, it's an incredible new step into another exciting genre for Jake. The 23 year is a smooth and silky rev...

This extremely rare example of pure pot-distilled Foursquare has never before been available in this form. Foursquare's wonderful rums are almost always blended. That's the style that Richard Seale, the distillery's owner and Master Distiller/Blender, believes to be the most appropriate for his rums, but we're none the less intrigued to taste the pure pot distillate and lucky to have acquired some from the fabulous Habitation line. This oddity was aged for only two years in the tropical Bajan heat, but already has lost more than 15% of the original volum...

Distilled at the South Pacific Distillery in Fiji, this incredible rum sees 7 years of bourbon cask aging in Fiji followed by 2 years of Continental elevage in Ferrand Cognac casks. It's the product of a 4-5 day fermentation and a combination of pot and column distillate. There is zero color of sugar added. The result is a special rum with an intense fruity nose and a lovely oily/buttery texture. It's rich and laced with spice, tropical fruits, and bits of cocoa. The finish lingers for minutes.

The very special Hampden Estate is one of the last of the truly old-style Jamaican rums available. The distillery, which long made ends meet selling to blenders and bottlers, has finally released their finest rums under their own label. With the full support of the fabulous Luca Gargano of Velier, Hampden has packaged this exceptional 7-year-old rum with absolutely no additives or adulterants of any kind. Hampden Estate produces rums inoculated with dunder, a process not totally dissimilar from sour mashing in Kentucky, which uses the spent lees of disti...

The story from Mr. Ed Hamilton: "In the twenty years I lived on a yacht sailing the West Indies I really enjoyed drinking some great white rums. Back in the US, I missed that clean, fresh flavor of aged molasses-based rum that had been carbon-filtered to remove the color gained during a few years spent aging in oak barrels in the tropics. In addition to the fresh flavor of the rum there was also a slight coconut note generally attributed to the American oak barrels in which these rums were aged. Like so many things those rums that I enjoyed in the '90s a...

96-100 points Wine Enthusiast: "The nose offers scents of white pepper, citrus, and saddle leather; old oak, sautéed almonds, candied walnuts, old library, and distant oloroso Sherry. The palate entry is rich, nutty and oaky; the midpalate bursts with woody, sherried, honeyed, vanilla extract flavors. Finishes opulent, honeyed, and elegant. Fantastic." (06/2006) K&L Notes: Neisson Rhum Agricole Réserve Spéciale is characterized by a rich aroma of dark fruit and roasted nuts leading to a hearty body of fruit, nuts, smoky oak, and vanilla followed by hin...
