1989 Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1989 Sociando-Mallet, Haut-Médoc (90RP, 90WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Once again this estate revealed its excellent quality/price ratio. As one taster so appropriately stated after learning the identity of both the 1989 and 1990 Sociando-Mallets, "I'd rather have the '89 or '90 Sociando-Mallet than the '89 Margaux or '90 Mouton in my cellar." Both wines showed surprisingly well, performing at second or third-growth levels. The 1989 reveals a youthful, unevolved purple color, followed by a sweet nose of black fruits, minerals, and vanillin. The wine is extremely young (much more so than most 1989s), with medium to full body, good tannin, and not nearly as much of the vintage's soft, evolved personality in evidence. (RP)" (02/1997)

1989 Château Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (375ml)
Bid on this 4-half-bottle lot of 1989 Château Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape (375ml) (97JD, 97RP, 97WS, 93JG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 is inkier/purple in color than the 1990, with an extraordinarily sweet, rich personality offering up notes of smoke, melted licorice, black cherries, Asian spices, and cassis. Full-bodied and concentrated, it is one of the most powerful as well as highly extracted Beaucastels I have ever tasted. It requires another 3-4 years to reach its plateau of maturity, where it should remain for at least two decades. (Many purchasers have reported bottle leakage (due to a cork problem) with this vintage. I purchased two cases of this wine, but none of my bottles reveal any sign of leakage. A good friend of mine, Dr. Jay Miller, owner of Bin 604 Wine Sellers in Baltimore, has consistently had a problem with “corked” bottles of the 1989, but no leakage.) (RP)" (01/2003)

1989 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe
Bid on this 5-bottle lot of 1989 Cos d'Estournel, St-Estèphe (95RP, 94JS, 93ST, 93WS, 90JG). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Tasted at Robersons’ 1989 Bordeaux horizontal. The Cos d’Estournel 1989 has a dense, broody bouquet with typical Saint Estephe earthiness complemented by hints of seaweed and a touch of ox blood. The palate is medium-bodied with firm but rounded tannins, very good weight and concentration here, fine acidity and harmony with a nice build so that its finishes with a peacocks tails of mulberry, cedar and leather. This is maturing beautifully, lovely talcum finish. Drink now-2025. Tasted June 2010. (NM-Wine Journal)" (11/2010)

1989 Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1989 Spottswoode Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "In 1989, rain occurred before and during the harvest, causing panic in Northern California, where rain is rarely an issue after March and before mid-November. This was a surprisingly delicious, up-front, in-your-face style of wine, with loads of ripe black and red currant fruit, spring flowers, soft tannins, a medium to full body, not much complexity, but it is a delicious, sensual, fruit-driven wine that seems fully mature and capable of holding on for another 5-6 years. Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1989 Dunn Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon (94VN, 92WS). Vinous: "A wine of pure texture and sensuality, Dunn's 1989 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain stands out for its exceptional overall balance and layered, silky personality. Veins of underlying minerality add brightness to a core of dark red fruit, crushed rocks, mint, flowers and spices. What a pretty wine this is. (AG)" (02/2014)

1989 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (OWC)
Bid on this 12-bottle lot of 1989 Mouton Rothschild, Pauillac (OWC - 98JS, 97DC, 96WS, 93RP) in original wood. James Suckling: "Freshly picked blackberries turn into minty dark chocolate and oozing caramel with domineering eucalyptus on the nose. It becomes yet more complex on the palate thanks to layers upon layers of spices and sage plus fat and rounded tannins. There's a long finish with a bitter aftertaste, suggesting this could do with another 10 years or more of bottle aging. This is a Mouton I found massive at the time, then elegant and slightly austere years later, but today true to its former glory. Like the amazing 1947, it should not be forgotten." (06/2016)

1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac
Bid on this bottle of 1989 Lynch-Bages, Pauillac (99RP, 96VN, 96WS, 95ST, 94JG, 94JS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 1989 has taken forever to shed its formidable tannins, but what a great vintage of Lynch Bages! I would rank it at the top of the pyramid although the 1990, 2000, and down the road, some of the more recent vintages such as 2005, 2009 and 2010 should come close to matching the 1989's extraordinary concentration and undeniable aging potential. Its dense purple color reveals a slight lightening at the edge and the stunning bouquet offers classic notes of creme de cassis, subtle smoke, oak and graphite. Powerful and rich with some tannins still to shed at age 22, it is still a young adolescent in terms of its evolution and will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring. It should prove to be a 50 year wine. (RP) 99+" (08/2011)

1989 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan
Bid on this bottle of 1989 La Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100RP, 97JG, 97ST, 96WS). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Both La Mission-Haut-Brion and Haut-Brion hit home runs in this vintage, which did not produce as many profound wines as the Bordeaux publicity machine suggested. 1989, the 200th anniversary of the French revolution, was an incredibly hot year (surpassed only by 1990 and 2003). Even from barrel the seamless 1989 La Mission revealed a special elixir aspect, tasting like it had been designed by Chanel. It still possesses a blue/purple color with only a hint of garnet creeping in, and the explosive aromatics offer up notes of licorice, creme de cassis, blueberry liqueur, smoky barbecue meats, truffles and graphite. If that’s not enough to get one salivating, the palate has never disappointed either. Full-bodied with extraordinary opulence as well as sweet, well-integrated, velvety tannins, this fresh, lively, blockbuster La Mission appears to be one of those rare win

1989 Opus One Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend
Bid on this bottle of 1989 Opus One Napa Valley Bordeaux Blend. Vinous: "One of the powerhouses in this vertical, the 1989 Opus One explodes from the glass with layers of resonant fruit. Over time, the intensity of the fruit fades a little as some slightly more rustic elements – including a suggestion of brett – emerge. A spell of rain brought some relief to the drought-striking plants. The 1989 is 97 Cabernet Sauvignon, 2% Cabernet Sauvignon and 1% Merlot. (AG)" (06/2013)

1989 Margaux, Margaux
Bid on this bottle of 1989 Margaux, Margaux (97WS, 92RP). Wine Spectator: "This is about as alluring as it gets aromatically, with singed alder, juniper, bay and charcoal notes out front, hinting at power but turning beguiling as they flow into the core of steeped red currant, dried currant and black tea. The charcoal note makes an encore, with a lovely twinge of old-school character holding the finish. Always a great debate vis-à-vis the '90, but the slightly darker profile here gives this wine a lovely bit of extra drama. (JM, Web Only-2014)"

1989 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac
Bid on this 2-bottle lot of 1989 Pichon-Baron, Pauillac (95RP, 95WS, 94ST, 94VN). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "Both the 1989 and 1990 vintages exhibit opaque, dense purple colors that suggest massive wines of considerable extraction and richness. The dense, full-bodied 1989 is brilliantly made with huge, smoky, chocolatey, cassis aromas intermingled with scents of toasty oak. Well-layered, with a sweet inner-core of fruit, this awesomely endowed, backward, tannic, prodigious 1989 needs another 5-6 years of cellaring; it should last for three decades or more. It is unquestionably a great Pichon-Longueville-Baron. (RP)" (02/1997)

1989 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon
Bid on this 3-bottle lot of 1989 Hanzell Sonoma Valley Cabernet Sauvignon. All of Hanzell's vineyards are farmed to the same exacting standards. The average vine age is over 30 years old. At harvest, the grapes are hand picked, hand sorted, and when the wine in barrel has aged enough, everyone comes together to sample each barrel lot. The Winemaker then finalized the blend for each wine. A lot of attention to detail, pride, and love go into each bottle.

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Haut-Brion, Pessac-Léognan (100JG, 100JS, 100RP, 100WS, 98VN, 97ST). Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "This continues to be one of the immortal wines and one of the greatest young Bordeaux wines of the last half-century. Consistently prodigious and almost a sure bet to top the scoring card of any blind tasting of this vintage as well as other years, the 1989 Haut-Brion is a seamless, majestic classic, and a tribute to this phenomenal terroir and its singular characteristics. The wine still has a very thick, viscous-looking ruby/purple color, a spectacular, young but awesome smorgasbord of aromas ranging from scorched earth, liquid minerals, graphite, blackberry and black currant jam to toast, licorice, and spice box. The levels of fruit, extract, and glycerin in this viscous, full-bodied, low-acid wine are awe-inspiring. The brilliant symmetry of the wine, extraordinary purity, and seamlessness are the hallmarks of a modern-day legend. It is still in its pre-ad

Bid on this bottle of 1989 Paul Jaboulet Aîné "La Chapelle" Hermitage (100JS, 96JD, 96WS, 95RP). James Suckling: "I have always been a huge fan of this wine, with incredible depth and richness of character. Dried meat, game, berry, spice, asphalt and tar. Full body with layers of ripe tannins and spice. It goes on for minutes on the finish. This is a fabulously spicy with black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, black truffles, sous bois and licorice. Decant two or three hours before serving. Purity and balance. This is the legendary 1961 again." (12/2014)
