99 Points: A Spectacular Super Tuscan—2016 Le Pupille "Saffredi" - 05/14/2019 - Italy

Now in stock and on our shelves is one of the top Super Tuscans of the glorious 2016 vintage. A dazzling wine from start to finish, the 2016 Le Pupille "Saffredi" has already become a favorite among critics and collectors. It is a fruit-driven effort that’s perfectly accented by a symphony of spice and earth tones. Antonio Galloni of Vinous was especially enamored by the wine’s power and depth, noting that it is “...massive and yet remarkably vivid for such an intense wine.” This 2016 deftly bridges the gap between Old World and New World and is an instant crowd pleaser—it is little wonder James Suckling once dubbed it the “Lafite of Tuscany.” Best of all, it is priced well under the $100 mark, making it one of the most affordable collectibles on the market. Proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti and her team have elevated this property to magical heights with this remarkable 2016 as a crowning achievement. It will be a welcome addition to any collection that’s rich in the best of Tuscany. Don’t miss out on this truly inspirational Super Tuscan.

2016 Fattoria Le Pupille "Saffredi" Maremma Toscana ($89.99)

99 points James Suckling: "Incredible aromas of dark berries, lavender, rosemary, licorice and dried flowers. Spice. Full body and fantastic tannin texture with great length. Goes on for minutes. Muscular yet wonderfully formed and refined. A glorious Saffredi. Drink in 2022." (12/2018)

98 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The 2016 Saffredi brings full-throttled intensity in a very well-balanced wine. The blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (60%), Merlot (30%) and Petit Verdot (10%) spends 18 months in mostly new oak. This vintage is compact, firm and precise, with lovely floral aromas on the bouquet in front of blackberry and plum. Long oak toasting gives the wine tasty notes of spice and cinnamon and rounds the bouquet off nicely. The mouthfeel is soft and velvety. This is a complex, integrated and absolutely beautiful wine. (JC)" (05/2019)

93-96 points Vinous: "One of the highlights in this range, the 2016 Saffredi is a hugely promising wine marked by a beguiling combination of vertical structure, energy and concentration. Black cherry, lavender, spice, plum, sage and lavender all pulse with remarkable energy. Massive and yet remarkably vivid for such an intense wine, the 2016 is shaping up to be a real jewel of a wine. (AG)" (03/2019)

I have to say I loved the 2015 vintage of this wine for its sweet fruit purity, it was ripe yet focused, and all around a fantastic wine. Yet the 2016 vintage for me is insanely good, fruit concentration yet so much focus, drive and palate lift, no jiggle just supple, smooth power. If youve never experienced this wine it isnt a classic Napa fruit bomb (no offense Napa) it shows more wild herb, Tuscan brush, earth, spice, leather .and then gobs of fruit, but linear fruit, such intense focus and lengththis wine is intense and stunningly good. Saffredi is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Petit Verdot but grown along the Tuscan coast a short drive south of Bolgheri and compared to prices in that neighborhood its a giveaway.
