2016 Titus Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon (Elsewhere $55) Price: Hidden

92 points Jeb Dunnuck: "The similarly colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon gives up more density and depth as well as meaty red and blue fruits, forest floor, and earth. It's layered, has terrific purity of fruit, a supple texture, and the purity of the vintage. Drink it over the coming decade or so." (01/2019)

92 points James Suckling: "Some quite meaty and spicy oak aromas here with a wealth of ripe mixed berries. The palate has a very smoothly arranged feel with toasty oak threaded through ripe, plush and soft berries. A blend of 85 percent Cabernet Sauvignon with Petit Verdot, Merlot and Malbec. Let the oak settle. Try from 2020." (10/2018)

92 points Vinous: "The 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is an attractive, mid-weight wine with tons of near and medium-term appeal. Dark cherry, plum, blueberry, new leather, spice open up effortlessly in this expressive, silky Cabernet from Titus. I would prefer to drink it over the next 10-15 years. (AG)" (12/2018)

90 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Cabernet Sauvignon is a little closed, revealing subtle suggestions of crushed blackcurrants, blackberries and warm black plums with touches of cigar box, dried Provence herbs and underbrush. Full-bodied and packed with firmly textured, muscular fruit, it has a restrained, earthy character and pleasant herbal sparks lifting the finish. (LPB)" (10/2018)

K&L Notes: Winemaker's notes: "The 2016 Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon displays the brilliance or our Titus Ranch Estate with the preponderance of the Cabernet for this year's wine coming from this vineyard site. The sandy soils on the property and limited irrigation throughout the growing season make for wines with beautiful depth and lushness of tannin. The 2016 exhibits aromas of pomegranate, Bing Cherry, crushed flowers, sweet herbs, dried cranberries, and mocha. The delightful aromas follow through to the mouth-filling and concentrated palate with flavors of French plum, mission fig, fruit leather, cocoa powder, and espresso. The tannins and acid provide freshness and grace to the wine that makes it tasty and approachable. Enjoy now through 2026. 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6.5% Petit Verdot, 5% Merlot, 3.5% Malbec."

Titus in not a new player in the world of Napa Cabernet. Lee and Ruth Titus purchased the 30+ acre property in 1969. The first vintage of Titus was not made until the release of the 1990 vintage. The winery has been making excellent Cabernet a bit under the radar for nearly 30 years! The 2016 shows a big wallop of upfront toasty oak which is balanced with layers of fruit, mineral and coco powder. This is a delicious, well balanced classic style Cabernet Sauvignon that is reasonably price.

A big, bold, powerful Napa Cab from legendary, longtime Chappellet winemaker, Phillip Titus. As winemaker at Chappellet since 1990, Philip has crafted some of the most highly touted wines in the region's history including multiple perfect 100 point scores from Wine Advocate! Back in 1968 his family purchased a 50 acre estate in St. Helena and re-planted it to Cabernet Sauvignon and other Bordeaux varietals. The same year Philip took over as winemaker at Chappellet (1990) he also assume that role at his family's eponymous winery and he has been making the wines side by side ever since. The 2016 Titus Cab shows the concentration and structure of the blockbuster vintage. The warm climate of St. Helena fleshes out the palate and wraps the tannins in luxurious, ripe, dark fruit and notes of scorched earth and exotic oak. This tastes expensive and could easily blend in with a line up of cult Napa Cabs that cost 3-5 times as much.

Breaking into the $40 Napa Cabernet field can be a tough prospect. After tasting the 2016 Titus, its clear that theres a new leader in the pack. There are spice, cedar and black fruits aromas on a deeply satisfying nose. On its richly textured palate, there are savory elements, black fruits and dry herbs. The tannin structure is absolutely off the charts. This is one of those wines that leaves your head spinning like, How did they do just that?. Theres plenty of backbone here, but it hits all the different parts of your palate at just the right levels and just the right times. This wine showcases a stunning display of winemaking skill.

I've always been a fan of Titus and I am so glad to see it back here on our shelves. The Titus has all the polish and intrigue of a classic Napa Cabernet. As you approach the $50 mark, extraction and overt fruit tends to take the wheel but here you have classic flavors of currants, plum, black cherry, cocoa and tobacco. This is worthy of a few years in the cellar but offers immediate pleasure with a quick decant.

You may not be familiar with the Titus name, but you may very well have had one of Phillip Tituss wines, since hes been the winemaker at Chappellet since 1990. Over the course of time, hes crafted some legendary (and 100 point!) wines. Brothers Phillip and Eric run the Titus family estate nestled in the heart of the St. Helena appellation at the foot of Howell Mountain and have been doing so for 30+ years. Ive been a major fan and supporter of these wines for years. Not only are the wines flat out delicious, but theyre a relative steal compared to wines of the area. I love the high-toned juicy style of these wines. Bright cherry, pomegranate, and black berry notes are enhanced by crushed flowers, herbs, and a dusting of mocha. Ripe tannins give the wine the proper amount of structure while retaining a silky smoothness. Big fan!
