A Double 93-Point Red from a Spanish Superstar—Only $17.99 - 06/13/2019 - Spain

Raul Perez is a Spanish winemaking dynamo with the Midas touch. For evidence of his prowess, one need look no further than his sensuously seductive 2017 "Ultreia St-Jacques.” This fresh and fruit-driven red is hands down one of the finest values in all of Spain. The critics were dazzled by this sub-$20 charmer, awarding excellent points and strong praise, with Luis Gutiérrez of Wine Advocate writing, “It's very reliable and a great value.” A non-interventionist approach allows the fruit to truly shine, revealing intense flavors of wild blueberries and strawberries along with a modest touch of spice. This is a terrific bottle to pop and pour, but there’s enough definition and body for it to develop for another 5-plus years. For under $20, you’d be hard pressed to find a wine this engagingly delicious. A perfect pick for your next casual gathering or anyone looking for the next great thing in Spanish wine.

2017 Raul Perez "Ultreia St-Jacques" Mencía Bierzo ($17.99)

93 points Decanter: "A field blend of Mencia, Alicante Bouschet, Pan y Carne and some white varieties, fermented with natural yeast in old oak tanks using 100% stems and no temperature control. It undergoes malo in tank and then spends one year in old barrels. There's no remontage or pigeage, and he works without sulphites. This has bright, fresh blueberry and cranberry fruit with a rasp of tannin and a savoury, saline sign-off. Drinking Window 2020 - 2024 (SJE)" (02/2019)

93 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate: "The clean, floral and 2017 Ultreia Saint Jacques comes mostly from old vineyards from different soils in Valtuille and Villadecanes fermented in stainless steel and oak vats with part of full clusters and matured in used barriques for one year. It's produced in a fresh and very drinkable way. This is one of the best values from Bierzo and Spain, and a great introduction to Bierzo. It's a more serious wine than what the wine was when it was first produced, fresh and elegant. It's very reliable and a great value. (LG)" (02/2019)

Raul Perez is a rock star in Bierzo and this wine is a testament to his fame. A bold, new-wave of Spanish winemakers has lifted Bierzo out of the back woods obscurity to international prominence on the success of the Mencia grape. It does not surprise me at all to see consumer demand growing all the time. The Mencia grape offers all the charm of Pinot Noir meets Syrahsort of. It has that silky polish of Pinot Noir but with the bold fruit of Syrah. Im a big fan of this wine and it looks like the critics are as well. Another tremendous value from Spain.

Wow! There is a whole lot of wine here. Raul Perez is one of the most esteemed winemakers in the region. His knowledge of the vineyards in the region gives him access to lots of old vine fruit and his minimal intervention winemaking still lets all that fruit shine thru. This is not the flashiest introduction to Bierzos wines but it could be the deepest and the purest. Lots of dark fruit tones underpinned with subtle herbal and spice notes. You can say it is built either like Loire Valley Cabernet Franc or Pinot, whichever you like best. But it does have softer tannins fresh acid bright savory fruit and intrigue. This is a ridiculously good bottle of wine for less than $20.

My previous experiences with Mencia Bierzo had always been filled with over-ripe and sweetish wines...I really was not looking forward to tasting this, but WOW was I surprised. The nose of this wine is filled with complex fruit, earth and spices not enough to list separately but as one they are wonderful. This wine shows incredible depth, spine and layers of character. You're getting I think this wine is really good? Well developed palate presence, long, long finishthis is a superb wine for the price.
