 This wine's blackberry and cherry aromas are dark and ripe, with leathery complexity. It's full and balanced, with tannins that are just edgy enough to lend structure to the baked berry, chocolate and meat flavors. The long finish is laced with earthy notes and bold acidity.  The regular red 2014 Valderiz is a blend of grapes from six different plots planted with Tempranillo and as with all the old vineyards in the zone, some white Albillo. It fermented with natural yeasts and matured in oak barrels and some larger foudres for some 20 months. I'm missing here the finesse I was expecting in this wine, which felt a little too ripe and came through as warm and quite dense with very ripe flavors and a finish where the alcohol is slightly noticeable. Riper than what I like, but still pretty good in its style. (LG)  (2/2017)

Located in the district of Roa, one of the best villages for vineyards in Ribera del Duero, and perhaps not coincidentally, where the offices of the RDD consejo are based, Valderiz makes great wines from Tempranillo grapes in the region's chalky, high plateau vineyards. This is ideally paired with anything grilled, particularly steaks or lamb chops. As the review suggests, this wine should improve very nicely, developing more subtly savory flavors, while still retaining all that mouthwatering fruit, over at least the next 7-8 years--likely longer.

I briefly visited Ribera del Duero a few years ago and along with the remarkable wines of the region the food really stood out as well. There was one dish in particular that brings me back and that is Morcilla. Probably the best I have ever had, with its savory blood sausage notes, cumin spices and rich texture. And that brings me to the Valderiz. Sun parched Ribera produces bold and intense Tempranillo but the foods are perfectly fashioned to cope with these textured wines. The Valderiz has beautiful roasted plum and currant flavors accented by chocolatey tones and dusty spices. It is long and deeply intense and makes me really crave that unforgettable meal.

Deep and powerful, the 2014 release from Valderiz is classic Ribera that, for $30, drinks with a quality well beyond most Cabernet for the same price. This is staggeringly aromatic wine showing stewed black cherries, steeped plum, spice cake, cloves, mint, cedar, pine, and dark cocoa. Rich and velvety on the palate with pleasant spice and sweet tannic grip on the finish, this is beautiful and luscious on its own, or a perfect compliment to seared lamb.

After tasting this sensational Ribera del Duero red I quixotically leapt to their website, and discovered Tomás Esteban bent lovingly over his vines, caressing the leaves as if they were his children, which, because he planted most of them, they were. And this being the heart of Spain, I suppose the sight of octogenarian winemakers tilting toward their vines is far more common than tilting at windmills, and to better effect. An impressive Tempranillo of opaque, ripe black fruits, mineral earth, dark chocolate and lusty spice, assuaged by a dram of Albillo, this wine offers up luxuriant, savory flavors, succulence and firm tannins, the welcome companion to a range of grilled meats, especially lamb.

Whoa ...there is a whole lot of wine here for the price. Valderiz' 2014 Ribera del Duero better illustrates the appeal of this region's Tempranillo-based wines than any other I have had this year. Sweetly spicy black fruit aromas combine with plum sauce and an earthy peanut quality. On the palate, the wine has rich black fruits, tempered by sweet baking spices, leather, balanced acidity and well framed tannin. For a grilled steak or lamb chops, I think we have found your wine. Awesome stuff for under $30 -- compare with a Napa Cab at 2-3x the price.

Tempranillo

- A very important red grape varietal that's native to Northern Spain, grown across the north and central regions of the country. Low in acid and alcohol, with subtle strawberry, leather and tobacco notes, the grape responds well to oak aging and plays particularly well with others. Tempranillo is an important component, when combined with Garnacha, Mazuelo, Viura and Graciano, of Rioja, with the best examples coming for the cooler, higher-elevation regions like Rioja Alta and Rioja Alavesa. It is also grown in significant quantities in the Ribera del Duero where it is called Tinto Fino and Penèdes where it is called Ull de Llebre o Ojo de Llebre. Tempranillo hasn't gained a particularly strong foothold outside of Spain, achieving some success under the name Tinto Roriz in Portugal. There it is used as a component of Port and in the table wines of the Ribera del Duero and the Dão.
