 The 2016 Chablis Villages, produced entirely from purchased grapes, offers up a musky bouquet of spiced peaches and fresh melon. On the palate, it's medium-bodied, supple and open-knit, without much concentration or tension. It will be at its best in the near term. (WK)  (8/2018)

 Bright medium yellow. Tangy orange peel on the nose. In a fruity, nicely focused style with good density and framing acidity to its soft citrus flavors. This attractive village wine will give pleasure early. The Moreaus planned to bottle this wine in late July, or a bit later than they finished the '15. (ST)  (8/2017)

 Star winemaker Fabien Moreau makes a delicious Chablis, full of fruit, crisp with acidity and with a light, steely edge. This wine is all fruit, ripe lemon and green apple with a tight, fresh aftertaste. Drink from 2019. (RV)  (6/2018)

- It's hard to believe that up until about 30 years ago, this extremely popular varietal hid behind the veil of geographical names like Chablis and Puligny-Montrachet. Now grown all over the world and bottled by its varietal name, Chardonnay has achieved a level of branding unlike any other wine. Surprisingly, though, what you get when you buy Chardonnay can differ greatly from country to country and even within one country, depending on the climate where it's grown and how it is vinified and aged. From fresh, crisp and minerally with apple and lemon notes to rich and buttery with tropical fruit overtones, Chardonnay runs the gamut. In France's Burgundy, Chardonnay is the source of the prized wines of Chablis, Corton-Charlemagne, M√Ęcon, Meursault and Montrachet. It also the foundation of exceptional Champagne, where it is blended with Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier or vinified on its own into Blanc de Blancs. It is also extremely popular in California, and is gaining popularity in Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain and South Africa.

Unfortunately, the name has been borrowed and badly abused by producers of inferior white wines in the US as well as in Australia. True French Chablis is a delicate, stony, crisp Chardonnay, bearing no resemblance to the anonymous plonk so labeled here.
