2017 Les Vignerons de Fontès "Prieuré Saint-Hippolyte" Languedoc Rosé

SKU #1362832

Les Vignerons de Fontès is a cooperative winemaking facility in the hills outside the village of Pezenas in the Languedoc. Oenologist Corinne Pastourel oversees the project, which has a host of growers spread throughout the region over a range of soils including schist, basalt, limestone, and clay. Thirty of these growers formed the cooperative in the 1930s, and now their numbers surpass 200. K&L co-founder Clyde Beffa met Corinne years ago and forged the relationship that would bring us some of our most popular value wines coming from the south of France. The rosé, one of our best sellers every year, is a blend of 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache that is made in the saignée style whereby a light maceration occurs, and the fruit is bled off the skins. The wine is fermented and aged in stainless steel tanks, preserving the freshness and clean character of the wine. It is bright and lively, with aromas of raspberries, redcurrants, and white flowers. The Mediterranean influence is easily felt in this region, and the best cuisine for this wine is just that - Mediterranean! Serve with roasted vegetables, chickpea salad, and fresh cheeses. A delight!

So everyone knows that Syrah-based rosé can use a little more time in bottle than other varietals to show its best. Okay, not everyone knows that. So even though 2018 rosé is starting to show up, this 70% Syrah from the 2017 harvest has settled in and is going great now and all summer long. There's a lot of substance here, so see for yourself for a song.

Great inexpensive little rosé! Spicy strawberries and dark chocolate with raspberry bits on the nose with a clean and spicy palate of raspberry hard candy and a nice round mouth-feel. Don't have to think twice about this little guy!

If you are looking for an alternative to the super light, higher-acid Provencal roses, this is the wine you should pick up. There is a wide breadth of fruit here, with weight and richness shining through. The softer fruit notes make this a good food rose that won't get lost with bolder flavors. I appreciate the unique Syrah heavy blend, especially at the under $10 price point.

Country:

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
