2015 Charles Baur Sylvaner Alsace

SKU #1365186 92 points Vinous

Luminous straw-green. Broad aromas of ripe apple, pear and quince, complicated by a lively note of chamomile; the warm vintage has given a rather rich, ample nose for Sylvaner. Then much more delicate in the mouth, with very refined chamomile and quince flavors enlivened by mint and white peach nuances. Really lovely Sylvaner, and given its gentle price, this is a real steal - don’t miss it. Made from 30-year-old vines in the Vordere Sundgasse, a clay-calcareous site near Eguisheim. Bauer rates this wine as medium-dry on his four-point scale on the back label; the impression of sweetness derives not from residual sugar but from the glycerol mouthfeel this lovely wine is imbued with. Notes of ripe pear and dry hay appear on the open nose. The palate is light and fresh with lemon but also rounded by ripe pear juiciness. Purity, vividness and that lovely hay perfume are chief characteristics. The finish is off dry but balanced. (AI) (4/2019)

Crushed stone, green apple and almond aromas follow through to a medium body, good fruit and a simple, off-dry finish. Drink now. From organic grapes. (6/2017)

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.

- A region and appellation in France that has been a part of both France and Germany throughout history. Geologically isolated from both countries, Alsace has also maintained much of its own culture and wine tradition, while also being influenced by the traditions of both countries.
