2017 Domaine du Petit Clocher Anjou Blanc

SKU #1371969 91 points Wine Enthusiast

Outer quote mark Superripe grapes are the secret behind this rich wine. Although it is dry, this floral wine offers a touch of honey that balances the crisp apple flavors and opulent texture. Still young, this intense wine deserves to age. Drink from 2020. (RV) Inner quote mark (9/2018)

K&L Notes

Established over 50 years ago, the 4th generation of the Denis family now runs this operation. Julien is the winemaker, Stephane in charge of the viticulture and Vincent oversees the administration and sales. Over the last decades the property has grown from 5 to 80 hectares that stretch across the appellation including some very select parcels in the Coteaux du Layon (home of one of the region's great dessert wines). The Anjou Blanc is grown on primarily schist soils and goes through its elevage in stainless and then some barrel aging. The introduction of oak is minimal though using primarily older barrels to impart a little spice character while helping build the texture and richness of the wine.

Petit Clocher was one of my favorite discoveries for the Loire portion of our DI program a couple of years ago. A family owned estate - the three Denis cousins now work the various parts of the operation in the region of Anjou. Specializing in Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, they craft delightful and well structured wines that have great varietal and regional profiles, all for a very reasonable price. The Chenin each year is always a staff favorite and we just received the last drops of the 2017 vintage. It is an exceptional wine with its profile of pear, roasted apple, crushed quartz and kaffir lime. It continues to develop but for even an entry level wine - this has some real stuffing that will allow it to drink well and even evolve for years to come. Come try what the staff is all talking about - the Petit Clocher wines!

This is one of my favorite producers in the store. Chenin makes such great white wine, and Anjou consistently provides some of the best valued wines in the loire. The Petit Clocher Anjou Blanc has ripe, fleshy fruit, with rich and supple texture and bright fresh acidity. Arriving just in time for summer, this is the perfect white to pair with tangy or creamy cheeses and cool melon.

I drink a lot of Chenin Blanc and this is one of the best bottles in the store, especially for the price. You really should drink as much as you can before people realize how good and undervalued the Anjou region is compared to the rest of the Loire. The greystone aromas are followed and an incredibly interesting honeysuckle, pear and citrus palate with a fleshy mouthfeel that awesome to drink by itself. It's not an acid freak, but its balanced enough against that weight in the mouth to do the job. I really can't say enough about this wine but I love it!

One of those wines that will leave you wondering how you paid so little for such an extraordinary experience. I found it to be more mineral-driven on the nose than on the palate, which was pleasant for me because I enjoy a touch more texture for mouthfeel. Also smelled what felt like a touch of mint. Lightly fruited, as well; I tasted some pear nectar. Awesome stuff.

The buyers at K&L are constantly on the prowl for great value wines. The Petite Clocher is a perfect example of succeeding at that quest. Quite frankly, I was stunned by this little Chenin Blanc overachiever. Both the whites and the reds of Anjou provide exceptional values when compared to their peers along the Loire river. This beauty packs a ton of juicy peach and pear fruit framed by just enough acidity to keep it bright, fresh, and lively on the palate. I can see this being the perfect mid-week wine to accompany a host of lighter dishes; seafood or poultry. This is an immensely satisfying wine that simply defies the price. You’d be well served to put a six-pack in your pantry as your house go-to white; while supplies last.

Thanks to its direct import pricing, this is the best deal in Chenin Blanc you can find right now, period. On the nose, you smell vibrant minerality, pears, and apple compote. On the palate, there’s plenty of generous fruit, but the minerals integrate nicely and there is great lifting acidity for balance. With Chenin being such a great aging white wine, I bought a few to throw into the cellar as well!

There is a lot to enjoy here for a surprisingly low price. Expressive floral and citrus aromas meld with crisp green apple and vivid acidity, culminating in a powerful and lively finish. A slightly honeyed texture softens and offsets the harsher aspects of this wine's youth. If you're looking for a cheerful, full-flavored dry chenin, look no further.
