 The excellent 2015 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is the best of these releases from Deovlet, wafting from the glass with a deep bouquet of plum, raspberry, loamy soil and subtle spice. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a layered mid-palate, good depth and concentration and a lovely sense of completeness. There's excellent balance between this Pinot Noir's velvety tannins, juicy acids and succulent core of fruit. (WK)  (4/2018)

 The 2015 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is a sensual, voluptuous beauty. Silky tannins, layered fruit and expressive aromatics give the wine its sheer appeal.  Leading off the single vineyards and mostly destemmed before seeing 18 months in 40% new French oak, the 2015 Pinot Noir Sanford & Benedict Vineyard is, I think, the first vintage for Ryan from this site. It's a blackberry, raspberry, spring flower and underbrush-scented 2015 that has a pure, elegant, mid-weight style on the palate that's a tad fleeting, yet it opens up nicely with time in the glass (I followed this bottle for three days). It has moderate density, a beautiful elegance and purity of fruit, fine tannin and a good finish. Like all these 2015s, it's not a blockbuster, but shines for its purity.  (8/2017)

Winemaker's notes: "This is our first Pinot Noir offering from this famed vineyard, and its pedigree resonates in this stunning and complex wine. A bright, vibrant nose offers hints of Bing cherry, tart red raspberry, and red plum with floral notes of lavender, rose petal, and black tea. On the palate the wine has beautiful freshness and structure, with tannin similar to red delicious apple skin, and a slate-like mineral presence. Aged for 18 months in 100% French oak, 30% new."

Another fine example of cool climate California Pinot Noir. Bursting with high-toned fruit wrapped in a blanket of baking spice, this wine is a stunner. Freshness and minerality abound; giving way to floral notes. Seamless structure along with racy acidity gives this Pinot great mouthfeel and an almost never-ending finish. Sure to impress even the most discerning of palates.

For me, Sanford and Benedict is without a doubt an American Grand Cru Pinot Noir Vineyard. What has been really inspiring over the past several years is their growing commitment to sell fruit to smaller and up-and-coming producers. It has elevated the wines coming out of the Santa Rita Hills across the board. Deovlet is one of those smaller producers that has used the fruit from this vineyard to craft absolutely stunning wines. The Deovlet Sanford and Benedict displays incredible aromas of beautiful, elegant fruit. It gently walks the line between feminine floral tones and more masculine savory elements. The palate is layered with savory notes, iron, and black fruit. Yet the body and texture of the wine ethereal and soft. A complex and intriguing wine that deserves a place at the table of any serious Pinot Noir lover.

A gorgeous wine and my favorite of our Central Coast trip. Incredibly aromatic and concentrated with plump blackberries, cherries and baking spices, and extraordinary depth and elegance from an amazing vineyard!

Pinot Noir

- One of France's most legendary grapes and the grape that earned Burgundy its reputation. The parent of varietals like Pinot Gris/Grigio and Pinot Blanc, Pinot Noir is blue to violet to indigo in color with relatively thin skins, and it is said to have been cultivated in France for more than 2,000 years. At its best, Pinot Noir creates elegant wines that are filled with primary red fruit aromas and flavors while young, revealing with an array of secondary characteristics like earth, smoke, violet, truffle and game with age. The varietal is also known, perhaps better than any, for its ability to translate terroir, or a sense of place. While the best Pinot Noir still comes from Burgundy, it is being produced with increasing success in cooler climates around the world. In France, it is part of the trifecta of grapes that can go into Champagne, and it is also grown in Alsace, Irancy, Jura, Savoie, Lorraine and Sancerre. Outside of France it is produced under the names Pinot Nero and Blauburgunder in Italy's mountainous regions, as Spätburgunder in Germany and as Blauburgunder in Austria. In the US, Pinot Noir has found suitable growing conditions in the cooler parts of California, including Carneros, the Russian River Valley, the Anderson Valley, the Sonoma Coast, Monterey County, the Santa Lucia Highlands and Santa Barbara County, as well as in Oregon's Willamette Valley. In recent years, New Zealand has demonstrated its ability to interpret this hard-to-grow varietal, with successful bottlings coming from careful and attentive growers in Central Otago, Martinborough and Canterbury. Chile is also an up-and-coming region for Pinot Noir, creating fresh, fruit-forward, early-drinking and affordable Pinots from the coastal Casablanca Valley and the Limari Valley.

As expected, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir thrive while the more inland zones lay claim to Bordeaux varietals and some Rhône blends.
