Shows excellent depth as well as vivacity; fine-grained, firming tannins build slowly on a long, floral-driven finish.  Medium garnet-purple colored, the 2014 Plexus (a Shiraz, Grenache. Mourvèdre blend) is a little youthfully reticent, offering glimpses at black raspberry and mulberry aromas plus licorice, cracked black pepper, earth and lavender. Medium to full-bodied and still very primary in the mouth, it has a great intensity of red and black fruit flavors supported by ripe, rounded tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and spicy. John Duval continues to "bring the pain" as it were with this bold, spicy Aussie gem. Duval still reigns as one of Australia's top winemakers and you don't have to spend up to get the quality. Full of brambly blackcurrant, dried blueberry, smoky tar and savory spices, this is fleshy and bold but still retains a finesse that leaves many other big reds scrambling to keep up. Always a favorite!

There is something about catching a wine right as it's beginning to hit its stride. This is absolutely the case with the 2014 John Duval Plexus, which is juicy, supple and delicious. The brightness of Grenache is a perfect counterpoint to the weight and deeper pitch of Syrah and Mourvedre. A perfect example of the kind ripe yet balanced deliciousness which first put the Barossa Valley on the map.

Duval does it again with this rich, succulent Shiraz, Grenache, Mourvedre blend. John Duval has been working and living in the Barossa all his life, and his wines are a true reflection of the vast knowledge he's gained of the region. Almost richer in style than his Entity Shiraz, deep red fruit and Christmas spices are intertwined here and culminate in a long and broad mouthfeel. Any fans of this classic blend will not find fault with this one, very reminiscent of Chateauneuf-du-Pape, but with a memorable Australian flair.

- While it is true that the greatest strides in Australian winemaking have come in the last 30 years or so, commercial viticulture began as early as the 1820s and has developed uninterrupted ever since. The majority of the great wine regions are in the southeastern area of the continent, including Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra in South Australia; Yarra Yarra Valley and Pyrenees in Victoria; and the Upper and Lower Hunter Valleys in New South Wales. Many of the wines from Southeastern Australia are based on Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon and various blends including Grenache and Mourvedre. In Western Australia, along the Margaret River, great strides are being made with Pinot Noir as well as Bordeaux-styled reds. There are also many world-class releases of Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc from the land Down Under, where Riesling also enjoys international acclaim. While many equate Aussie wines with “value,” there are more than a few extremely rare and pricey options, which never fail to earn the highest ratings from wine publications and critics throughout the world.
