1997 Benrinnes 20 Year Old "Signatory" K&L Exclusive Single Barrel Cask Strength Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1383229

For people who have been following us for a while, you'll remember this special whisky. We've purchased several of these and the 1995 version that's now completely gone. It was always neck and neck with the wonderful 1995 Imperials, which is now 3 times the old price in the warehouse. I was extremely concerned that Signatory would raise the price of this exceptional whisky to unobtainable levels, but after tasting it again from a particularly good cask I knew we had to have this special whisky and keep it reasonable. Benrinnes is one of these unknown Diageo distilleries that I truly believe to be of the very top quality. It's got some similar production quirks to Mortlach. Their five-still setup uses a complex system of holding back feints and cuts for re-distillation. In addition, the distillery is one of the last to use traditional worm tubs for condensation. I find those to be integral for creating the texture and nuance for which this pungent malt is known. The resulting whisky is unique in its vibrancy and depth, while showing exceptional length and complexity. 20 years seems to be the perfect age for this wonderful malt. I'm very lucky to have toured this gorgeous distillery between Aberlour and Glenfarclas and truly consider it one of the Diageo's unsung heros. One taste of this awesome cask and you'll teleport back to the good old days of when 'Rinnes flowed limitlessly. Amazingly we've been able to keep the price pretty low. Probably the last cask from this period.

Springtime in Scotland! We’ve got a garden of flowers and an orchard of fruits on the nose here. These fresh scents are followed by graham cracker and new leather. The palate is a bit more aggressive with leather and spice dominating early on before a nice fade to aged leather and vanilla in a very long finish. This Scotch stays with you... which is quite a lovely thing for it to do.

We've had incredible luck with the wonderful Benrinnes distillery across the board. The hidden little distillery sits a few miles behind Glenfarclas and when we rolled up to check it out without an appointment we were certain we'd be turned away. The distillery entrance is surrounded by old little homes and you immediately notice the Tibetan prayer flags hanging across road. With no gates or guards we parked the car and ventured into the first building with an open door. There a large gentleman was sitting at a desk and I think he jumped about a foot. We explained we'd had a retail shop and how much we loved their distillery and we understood a tour would be difficult without an appointment. He told us to wait a minute and dialed the manager, "You've got a couple of boys here who want to see the distillery." After a little pause he asked us, "Are you boys German?" No no no we're are not Sir! "Alright, she'll be right down!" The old distillery is as endearing as the gorgeous malt they make. Until 2007, the partial triple distillation: feints (tails) from the wash still and low wine still, weaker feints from the spirits are distilled again in the low wine still. The spirit still is fed by the hearts and head of the first two, as well as the heads and stronger tails of the spirits. The whole thing is cooled on these massive gorgeous worm tubs. The resulting whisky is one of the most pungent and fruity in the Diageo portfolio, this cask is no exception. Tons of ripe apples, flint and creamy malt. On the palate, mirabelle, chalk, slightly watered down honey. Super refreshing and zippy. With a bit of water the minerality comes forward as does the honey. A fabulous expression of this quirky little distillery.

I am always a fan of Signatory products and this bottling of Benrinnes shows why. It is a high quality selection that is at its peak of perfection and ready to drink now. The nose is very pronounced and expressive with pretty sweet wax aromas. In the mouth it is a pure pleasure with with complex juicy malt flavors. There is also a very subtle spice note.
