2017 Reynon Blanc, Bordeaux

SKU #1384067 92-93 points James Suckling

Lots of dried-lemon and lime character with crushed stones and salt. Full-bodied, dry and dense. Serious. (4/2017)

92 points Wine Spectator

Lovely tarragon, mâche and sweet pea notes stream through, set against a backdrop of lemon peel and pith to deliver a pure, bracing feel. Drink now through 2022. (JM, Web Only-2019)

90-92 points Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The 2017 Blanc has a super intense lime and lemon juice nose with hints of orange slices and coriander seed. The palate is medium-bodied with a great intensity of citrus fruits and wonderful depth, giving an electric backbone and long finish. (LPB) (4/2018)

91 points Decanter

An appealing richness alongside the minerality, the brightness to the overall structure is clear, as is the fleshy white peach character. Excellent quality, depth and power. Hard to quibble with in terms of value and the clarity of flavour it delivers. (JA) (4/2018)

88-90 points Vinous

The 2017 Reynon Blanc offers lovely texture to balance some of the more typical varietal Sauvignon Blanc aromas and flavors. Apricot, chamomile and mint are nicely defined. A touch of reduction adds nuance without overpowering the wine. (AG) (5/2018)

Jancis Robinson

Intense lemon and grapefruit aroma with a touch of Sauvignon Blanc herbal character. Very Sauvignon on the palate, herbal citrus, but with a slight grip adding texture and length. Oak is very subtle. Extremely moreish, good fruit depth and length. 16.5/20 points. (JR) (4/2018)

Wine Enthusiast

Taut and crisp, this is a lively, bright wine with intense acidity and a tangy, mineral texture that accompanies layers of pear, lemon and gooseberry. *Best Buy* (RV) (7/2018)

I've enjoyed many vintages of Reynon Blanc but definitely underestimated their impressive 2017. Aromas of gooseberry and lime burst from the glass while the palate is nicely textured with a core of bright acidity and plenty of lime flavors on the finish. This really over delivers at $15.

Fresh and crispy, this is my favorite vintage for the Reynon. Citrus and gooseberries, floral, with lots of minerality, and believe it or not a delicious note of honey! Quite dry, of course, and absolutely delicious!

A long time favorite for K&L and the 2017 is a great vintage for white Bordeaux. Spicy, lively and crisp. Will sell quickly.
Drink from 2018 to 2025

Additional Information:

Varietal:

Sauvignon Blanc

- One of the best known "international" varieties originally cultivated in France and considered the parent of, with Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon. Sauvignon's wonderfully distinctive aromatics generate some of wine's most colorful descriptors, among them "cat pee," herbaceous, grassy, citrusy the world over. In France, the apex of Sauvignon Blanc production is the Loire Valley, in the appellations of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé, where the terroir expresses itself most beautifully through the grape. Sauvignon Blanc is also the leading white grape varietal in Bordeaux, where it is paired with the fatter, richer Sémillon to varying degrees. Relatively easy to cultivate, though more suited to cool climates, Sauvignon Blanc has made inroads in Europe outside of France, especially in Northeastern Italy's Friuli and Alto Adige, but also on the Slovenian border. These lovely wines are often overshadowed by Sauvignon Blanc's achievements in the New World, namely New Zealand, South Africa and California. New Zealand's Sauvignon Blancs, more conspicuously fruity than most French examples, landed the small island nation on the world wine map in the late-1980s and 1990s. South African Sauvignons are one of the most successful international varieties produced in that country and are often quite elegant and affordable. In California, Robert Mondavi managed to, almost single-handedly, created a market for Sauvignon Blanc by renaming his oak-fermented version Fumé Blanc. While some wineries still use the name, California Sauvignon Blanc has secured its place in the California wine pantheon, particularly those from the Napa Valley. Washington State, Chile and Argentina also have considerable plantings of the grape.

France

- When it comes to wine, France stands alone. No other country can beat it in terms of quality and diversity. And while many of its Region, Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne most obviously, produce wine as rare, as sought-after and nearly as expensive as gold, there are just as many obscurities and values to be had from little known appellations throughout the country. To learn everything there is to know about French wine would take a lifetime. To understand and appreciate French wine, one only has to begin tasting them.
