Aberlour Casg Annamh "Batch #1" Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (750ml)

SKU #1396504 Whisky Advocate

A new small-batch addition to the Aberlour line-up, Casg Annamh (Gaelic for ‘rare cask’) has been matured in European and American oak oloroso sherry casks. Rich, buttery caramel aromas, grilled pineapple, and ginger. The palate is smooth, and yields spicy vanilla, tangerines, and cloves. Lots of black pepper and licorice in the relatively long finish. Less complex than the distillery’s A’bunadh. (GS, Winter 2018)

K&L Notes

The newest release from Aberlour, Casg Annamh, or "rare cask" in Gaelic, is an expression of balance that remains focused on the finest quality Olorosso Sherry casks available. It is a combination of European oak Sherry and two types of American oak. The results are a powerful whisky, one that is rich and intense but that retains elegance and grace. Batch #1 is proofed at 48% and is the perfect whisky for anyone interested in exploring what it means to have a Sherry focused whisky that isn't a Sherry bomb.

Such a great example of integrating different types of oak into one glorious whiskey. The sweetness of the Oloroso and the spicier, more savory elements from the American Oak marry well here. Sherry, candied nuts and winter spices on the nose, and on the palate lots of bracing wood kicks things into a higher gear. It certainly does not lack intensity, but has a gentle finish that brings you back in for more.

Fans of rich Highland and Speyside Scotches should flock here. This isn't a full-on Sherry-bomb sweetie, but the full effects of the Oloroso barrels are on display here. I pick up on brandy cherries, dehydrated strawberries, raisin, and warm nuttiness. Honey roasted oats, powdered malt, and caramel are also on display. The scents of this Scotch are warming and soothing - very much something I want to sip on a chilly evening to soothe my bones after a long day. More nuttiness comes out on the palate with roasted almonds, fresh-cracked walnut, and a little hazelnut. These flavors fade into the finish that's medium-long, malty, earthy, and, yes, warming. Cuddle up with this one.

Supple, rich, and inviting. Aberlour has delivered one of the best balanced whiskies in their portfolio with the Casg Annamh. Soft golden amber in color the nose leaps out of the glass. It's an amalgam of ripe fruits, raisins, orange peel and spicy ginger. The palate is full and amazingly intense without being overwhelming. Darker cocoa and mocha fill your mouth only to be replaced with burnt orange peel and candied ginger snap. Cloves and cinnamon show up on the finish and linger. Uncompromising in quality and true to Aberlour's house style, this whisky offers gentler side to A'bunadh fans, but won't disappoint those used to its bold flavors.
